I second Shiny's skirt suggestion. I have a lower belly that protrudes and skirts are my best friend. They hang instead of cling to that part of my body, so you can't tell what is me, what is air and what is fabric.

Also, lower rise jeans are not made for women with any excess flesh in the midde. All they do is push all that excess up and over the waist band, creating the dreaded muffin top. So again, Shiny and Imogen are spot on with the "higher waistband" suggestion.

One other suggestion is to visually slim your overall self by wearing heels.

One alternate suggestion to Imogen's darker top/lighter jacket suggestion is to try it in reverse. Wear a black jacket with a brighter top under. The black tends to disappear, making the brighter center the focus. This draws the eye in to the center. You ever notice a lot of bathing suits employ this tactic. They will have black bands along the ribs, and a bright center piece. It's very slimming.

Shiny, what great points. You also make such an interesting point about apples. They do usually have great legs! That is so true (my mom is an apple and has fantastic legs in her 60s - as a pear with chicken legs I have always envied them!), but I never put it all together until I read your post.

Where is your tummy fat?

Some people have undefined waists - apple shapes. Some people have defined waist but bulge below the waistline. It makes a difference, I think.

My tricks and tips:

1) Pick jeans and pants that hit you at the thickest part of your waist - to "lock and load." A wider waist band also works miracle. If troublezone is above, at, and below the waist then go for pants that hit higher rise - just below the belly button. If troublezone is below the waist, then go for lower-rise to hit that widest part.

2) Always fit for the widest part of your body - and tailor if you must. Don't squeeze into too-tight pants - they create muffin top - even on thin women! Ignore the size on the label - fit is more important than any number.

3) Wear a cami with stretch for smoothing over any bulges, if the troublezone is more at waist than below. If the trouble zone is below waist, look into spanx or other "gut sucker" panties.

4) Wear tops and blouses untucked and loose, then define a waist with a belt, a cardi buttoned at smallest part of waist, a cropped cardi, or a jacket. Layering is the best disguise. As is patterned blouses.

5) Focus on jewelry - a fabulous necklace or great pair of earrings will draw the eye up to your face and nobody will notice the belly.

6) Skip the pants and go for structured dresses that skim your figure. Structured clothing can be your friend. If you've got great legs (as most apples do), have the dress hit at the knee and show off your legs. With dresses, wear a full slip or negligee - so that it skims over everything and you have no elastic creating sausage casing bulges anywhere.

7) Skirts can also be your friend too - just steer clear of pleats if your trouble zone is below the waist!

Great tips from Imogen. Also, if you have a defined waist, you can accentuate that to draw the eye upward away from your belly.
The right type of bottoms can be just as helpful. Midrise pants tend to work best. Avoid pleats and elastic waistbands.
In general, wear clothes that accentuate the part(s) of your body you like, whether those are your shoulders or your calves etc, and it will automatically boost your confidence while deflecting attention away from your belly.

Wear a darker coloured top under a lighter coloured open jacket. This will visually slim your tummy.

Ruching is great (that's the gathering up the sides of the top) as it helps to minimise your tummy.

Make sure you clothes are fitted and not baggy - baggy doesn't make anyone look slimmer.

Keep your tummy free of detail - don't wear belts or draw attention to it with pockets or other details below the bust and above mid-thigh.
