I am being kind to myself as my body does its hormonal stuff but am ashamed to say that I failed to extend the same courtesy to my sister.

My sister lost a bunch of weight recently with some extreme dieting and wanted to buy some clothing in a silhouette that she has never tried before. I was quite vocal in my disappointment/concern of her choices. I have to think about my tendency to police/judge others.

bj1111, I think you may have hit the nail on the head with this comment....it's always nice to hear your friends insist that you are not fat - but this whole issue of 'Does my bum look big in this?' really does my head in. Every one of us has a different body type, and no matter how many stomach crunches or leg lunges or whatever we do, we can't change our god given body shape - if you are pear shaped, you will ALWAYS have a larger bottom than top, if you are an inverted triangle then you will always have wider shoulders than hips, no matter whether you are a size 0 or a size 20. The trick is to learn how to dress your specific body shape to make your outfits killer outfits everytime you walk out the door than try and dress for a body shape that you are never going to be. I have two daughters that are 7 and 2, my oldest has an hourglass body shape with solid little legs and arms. My 2 year old has the body I spent years wishing for, she has slim little legs and arms, no bum and an I or rectangular body shape. So they are both going to have to learn to dress their body in different ways due to their body shapes.

As a plus size woman I have only just learnt this, thanks in part to YLF and other fashion/style blogs - for years I dressed my body according to what was in fashion, rather than what suited my body shape, and wondered why I just couldn't get it right. Now that I've become aware of the shapes that work for me I am experimenting with new looks that I have never tried before and loving it. I feel much more fashionable now as a plus sizer than I ever did before.

Ladies, love the body you have right now !

perhaps women say "fat things" to friends simply as conversation/filler or for the pleasure of hearing a friends say "of course, you're not fat!"

For those of you who are taking part in this... how's it coming along for you?

I am finding it fairly easy not to say "fat things" myself, but here's a question: how should we respond when friends "fat talk?" A friend referred to herself as fat this week and I told her that she isn't. Another friend complained about having gained 3 pounds this month and I smiled and pointed out that 3 pounds isn't really worth worrying about... but my answers felt inadequate somehow.

I remind myself that not "talking fat" this week is my decision and so I shouldn't impose my restrictions on my friends.

This starts tomorrow morning, folks.

This mightn't be for everyone but I, for one, am going to try to to be more aware of my "internal talk," too. I'm generally fairly disciplined about not using "fat talk" aloud very often, but there seems to be quite a lot of it floating around my head, alas.

Good luck, to those of you who want to take part. I hope you'll post any thoughts or experiences you have with "Fat-Talk-Free Week" (if any) here in this thread.

I'm on board for this. I've realized, as a mother of two daughters, that I need to set a good example for accepting my own body and being positive about it.

Yeah, I agree; let's make a LIFE of this, rather than just a week. But.. baby steps... I'm going to start with a week : )
