Kind of off topic, but one of my friends (who recently had her first baby) wrote when she first started having to wear maternity clothes about how ridiculously comfortable she found maternity jeans with the stretchy panel (she was pretty small at that point.) She raved about how they totally eliminated any spillover/muffin top. I was half thinking "gee, that sounds like an excellent solution for my ridiculously short waist/high rise issue!" Somehow I don't think I could bring myself to purchase maternity jeans when I'm nowhere near pregnant, though.

I pretty much lived in Japanese Weekend for my pregnancies. A lot of the tops/dresses have hidden openings for nursing so they're useful for post-pregnancy. In fact (where's the bag over head smiley) I still wore several nice tops in between my two pregnancies and afterward, even though I haven't been pregnant in a year and a half. I may have to post a poll on those because I still want to wear them!

Holy crap, Brenda, FIVE kids? You must be supermom. :-)

OK, so I've done the maternity thing a mere two times, but the first time around there was an element of novelty to it, so I sort of enjoyed dressing my weirdly shaped body (once I'd got past the stage where my head was down the toilet all the time, that is). The formula that worked for me was to get three pairs of high-quality, not-cheap maternity jeans, a couple of stretchy skirts, and then a bunch of inexpensive tops from places like Old Navy. I had two pricier tops, too, for evenings out (one of which showcased my temporarily inflated boobs, which isn't my favourite look, but what the hell are you supposed to do with them when they're that big??).

After the pregnancy, it was sweat pants and milk-stained tee shirts for three months -- FRUMP CITY -- so I have no good advice there. Then I got a few pairs of pants a size up from my usual, which lasted me until the last of the baby belly went away, a full year after I had given birth.

I wore mostly the same clothes with my second pregnancy, along with some yoga pants that had a roll-down waistband. By the end, I wanted to set all my pregnancy clothes on fire.

I read a post on maternity clothes recently on the Smoking Lily blog. It's a clothing store based in Victoria, BC, and I love their stuff:

http://smokinglily.blogspot.co.....n-and.html

I don't know where your friend lives, but maybe they can ship there.

The only other maternity/nursing garments I can think of are Bravado bras and nursing tanks. They're super-comfy and supportive. I wore them all the time. You can get them online.

I got a lot of my maternity clothes from Target, Old Navy and Ross Dress for Less. My mom made me dress slacks for work since I had problems finding those at a price I was willing to pay. I hadn't discovered the joys of thrift shops when I was last pregnant, but it seems like you might be able to find a lot of good stuff if you thrifted - either actual maternity clothes or just stuff in larger sizes that could act as maternity clothes. I was never willing to pay much for maternity clothes since I knew I wasn't going to wear them very long. My other advice is to try to get items that will mix and match so you get the most mileage out of your wardrobe.

Oh, good grief - you had me. I thought you were preggers with number FIVE. Holy cow.

Anyway, I'd check out Old Navy Maternity, Gap Maternity sales and Target. I did NOT want to spend a lot of money on maternity clothes, and I was able to get some decent ones at very low prices at these three.

My favorites were Gap, Japanese Weekend (Must have at least one item with their fabulous OK waistband), Ann Taylor Loft (online mostly I think) and if she needs suits for work try ebay - lots of "boutique" items available. A few others that are no longer in business (babystyle). I loathed Motherhood for their draconian policies of no returns.
A few good online sources: picklesandicecream.com (might also have some B&M), Nordstrom, japaneseweekend.com, BODEN (wasn't around when I was pregnant), polarnopyretusa.com (only on sale)
Oh yes also alice & olivia are popular with the celebs

I've heard good things about Target, and also about Old Navy/Gap and Ann Taylor - although I think those latter are online only. Boden also just started carrying maternity stuff. The gal who blogs at Narrowly Tailored is 8-9 mo right now, and has had a lot of posts about maternity dressing; she seems to have gotten a lot of stuff second-hand via ebay, which seems to be very common with maternity clothes since they don't usually get worn out the first go-around. I have heard Japanese Weekend is a good brand. Already Pretty just posted about postpartum style, but there are lots of links there that would be informative for the pregnancy period too.

Well, first of all, for inspiration I would point your friend towards this guest post written by Patience:

As well as posts by some of the bloggers on Academichic who are or have been pregnant, even though the site is no longer updated: http://www.academichic.com/cat.....cademia-2/

Allie from Wardrobe Oxygen has some great posts and tips on maternity style: http://www.wardrobeoxygen.com/...../maternity

No, I'm not pregnant. A friend asked me to help her dress well during her pregnancy and I don't know where to take her shopping. Are there any great stores we should look for, or websites to look at for tips? Thanks!
