Thanks, Torontogirl! I've been getting lots of compliments on them.

The amazing thing is, they actually feel more secure in the snow than my La Canadienne flat boots. The La Canadiennes have no tread on the bottom--they are a sleeker-looking boot. I feel like the Blondos, even with their heel, are very sturdy. I've worn them quite a bit since I got them. It's so nice to have something that is both practical and fashionable!

Glad you found something, Gigi, and those are super cute! Alas, not practical for me, no -- I don't wear my dressy heeled boots more than a time or two a year. I need something with a lower, chunkier heel for walking in. But it's good to know that Blondo uses a similar process; thanks!

Hi Gigi, you are much more of a fashion expert then I am. I am a marine biologist and I do try to look good while having functional footwear when I go to cooler environments. Some fun boots I try for the winter include:

1. Moon boots (warm, excellent grip, super comfy)
2. Riding boots (casual, good grip)
3. Dress boots (dressy, for office or parties, still weather proof)

Between these three styles, you pretty much have all your bases covered, from deep snow / icy to casual office to dressy office boots. So you can get three pairs of boots to suit most winter occasions. Unless you are a shop-a-holic like me and end up with over a dozen pair of boots lol

Una, doesn't your leather footwear get damaged by wearing it in the snow? Or do you purchase footwear that is already a little bit on the more rugged/geary side? I'm thinking about your style, which is very different from mine (I wear more classic pieces), and I'm wondering if the leather used in the type of footwear that I normally buy is less tolerant of wet conditions. If it's been several days since it's snowed and the sidewalks are dry, I'd wear one of my regular leather pieces, but otherwise not.

I did buy these today. I found out that Blondo (a brand Diana mentioned above) uses a technique similar to La Canadienne and Aquatalia when making its footwear--that is, it does something during the tanning process to make the leather waterproof. So I did buy these, which seem to fit the bill. They are relatively stylish for winter footwear but also feminine, and they lace up so that they fit my low-volume foot and small ankle well. And they go above the ankle to keep the cold out. They feel like they will be very warm. So I'm giving these a go!

Suz, they make a taupish color (they call it mushroom) if you're interested. But maybe the heel makes it not practical enough for you.

Agree with the others that just one boot style will not do for everything. We have ice, wet slushy snow, dry powdery snow, knee-deep drifts, wind, rain, cold... And that's not even counting levels of dressiness, different shaft and heel heights, colors, or pants/skirt options. :) In my climate, I can justify just about any boot purchase.

As far as what I actually wear, if the weather permits I simply wear my good (suede, leather, patent) boots in the snow. If it's too messy, I wear gear boots (Kamiks, Sorels, Bogs) and change out at work.

Have fun collecting!

Suz, you are very right that a lot of the footwear that will fit this niche is pretty classic and will have longevity. And thanks for the reminder that Rome wasn't built in a day.:) I will definitely have to invest quite a bit of money in such footwear, because I see that some decent knee-high boots will have to be custom-made...calves too skinny. But I do continue to keep my eyes peeled for some decent synthetic boots, since I am willing to settle for less-than-perfect fit if I can tuck my pants in and the price is right. At least now I have a plan.

Gigi, I think that's key, and also, as Angie says, Rome wasn't built in a day. It is taking me some years to build up my snowy slushy weather footwear capsule. Partly because these items tend to be expensive, and partly because weather conditions (and needs) do change a bit year to year. One fortunate thing is that these kinds of boots tend to have a fairly long style life. So if you buy something you can be sure of being able to keep it for a good long time (if it doesn't wear out, that is). Even though I don't wear my dressy La Canadiennes that much, I am happy keeping them for occasions when they are needed; the same style is still for sale so they won't feel dated for a long time.

Thank you, everyone! This has been really helpful to me, to see how everyone else deals with this situation. It sounds like there are a few things I can do--maybe keep my eyes out for another pair of Aquatalias or La Canadiennes, look for a decent synthetic boot, and invest in another pair of snow boots when I find one I like. The combination of all of these will give me a little more variety than I have now. Yay!

I only use snow boots for dog walking, not out-in-public purposes. I like the studded Icebug boots from Sweden. For regular public purposes winter boots, it's Aquatalia and La Canadenne all the way. But I really wish La Canadienne did not love round toe boots so much ... I prefer pointed.

Oh yes, I have tried Merrell and Keen boots for dog walking and not had a pair of boots from either that lasted more than one season.

Snow boots, all the way! I care about feeling cozy/comfortable and staying safe on ice. I also like the romantic/sporty quality that some snow boots have. These Cozy Pac boots by Sorel are long time favorites (alas, out of stock). https://www.pinterest.com/pin/414120128211176178/ I've also had good luck with various waterproof knee-highs by Merrell.

I only wear my real snow boots (sorels) when it's actively snowing, as it annoys me to have to change them out at work. Otherwise, my go-to for snowy/icy city sidewalks are my black tall blondo boots. They look like regular riding boots and go with everything, but are waterproof, warm (fleece lined), and have good traction. I'm considering getting some in cognac too. My docs also work traction wise but I find the shaft a bit too low when accidentally stepping in a snow bank or slush puddle.

This year I've added some black, mid calf, shearling lined bean boots but haven't had a chance to put them through their paces yet....

I realize that I didn't really answer the question in a way. But basically my solution is Aquatalia and La Canadienne. These combine fashion and function better than anything I have yet discovered.

So I have 2 almost knee high options (not as high as riding boots but past the wide part of the calf). One mid calf black moto. And my light brown Blundstone ankle boots for rugged city wear.

I would love a pair of navy waterproof boots. And also light taupe but I somewhat despair of that HEWI. I do find myself feeling fashionably limited in winter both in terms of colour and silhouette. I need to embrace the season for what it offers and work within my constraints.

I feel like the waterproof leather boots from aquatalia and la canadienne would help a lot in filling this niche. You'd still need serious snow boots for the bad days but when it's not accumulating and pretty decently plowed they would work. I have two pair of faux leather side zip knee high boots that look very much like leather that are great to use when I'm traveling and its mucky out. They are from Target, both a couple of years ago. It does seem hard these days to find faux leather that looks decent and doesn't fall apart right away. Maybe some of the vegan shoe companies might have something, but then you're probably paying as much for faux as you are for real, and I don't know if that makes sense unless it's an ethical thing for you/one.

I have two pairs of true snow boots. For real hiking or snowshoeing, an older snow/ hiking boot by Soloman, and for in town walking/ snow shovelling, etc. I had Kamiks but am now looking into a different pair. Sorel boots don't fit me well and feel too clunky so I've been trying on a variety of other brands. I still haven't found my "perfect" boot for true snow and cold wet conditions but the hunt is on.

I don't wear these boots indoors at all (except maybe going in and out of a store) so they are strictly for outside use.

I also have two pair of La Canadienne boots (black medium casual and grey heeled dressy ones -- these second ones get little wear with my lifestyle, alas). And I have a frequently worn pair of Aquatalia moto boots with insoles added for extra warmth -- these are workhorses and they can be worn indoors (in a mall, at a restaurant, etc.). I would be unlikely to wear them inside my own home or the homes of friends because they would be too wet.

I often just pull on my Blundstones for quick walks to the gym.

And if the roads are dry and it is not too cold, I will wear "regular" booties in the city (but not on longer walks).

In other words -- I have to have options, and most of my options are based on practical need vs. "fashion," per se.

For really cold weather, I add nice wools socks, and I also have a pair of shearling boots that are prettier than UGGs and are extremely warm.

I also added a pair of Hunter boots to my collection this year. They are perfect for snow/slush or general crappyness on the ground. I added a couple pairs of fleece socks that come up over the top of these boots.

we don't get a ton of snow, but we do get a lot of slush and rain, and when we do get snow, we don't do a great job cleaning it up----anyway, i invest in waterproof spray. i find that for wet sidewalks etc spraying regular booties/boots are good enough. for real weather, i'm a believer in wearing an outdoor pair of boots and carrying an indoor pair.

Collette, I have a pair of La Canadienne and love them. I am amazed at how well they hold up in the elements. They are pricey, but well worth it. I should definitely invest in another pair of true snow boots too. And Joy, you're right that nice waterproof boots are expensive, so I like the idea of adding only one pair a year.

I have very uninspired looking black snow boots to wear to work, and I bring good shoes to wear indoors. I have a pair of ll bean type duck boots to wear on my days off and that's it! When it's snowy or slushy, as it usually is here ( southern New England) for most of January, February and some of March, I don't even try to have cute footwear. Warmth and practicality trump fashion.

Knee high boots with chunky heels, but in leather, for days when I can get away with it and/or will be wearing them for significant indoor time as well. They will be worn looking by the second year and done after that, so I don't spend a fortune ( but in Canada I will have to spend $200-250 before tax regardless, so they aren't cheap either). I don't see anything in fake leather I would wear, especially since I need a sturdy low heel and decent tread. Cute snowboots for outdoor activities and those days they are absolutely necessary to get to work, but I will be able to change into something else there - just too hot to wear indoors for any length of time. I also have Hunters and love them for rain or serious slush days, but I'm not convinced they are right for truly cold (or slippery) conditions.
Hmm. This doesn't really constitute "interesting" so much as practical, though. Sorry.

I'm with Colette in no longer ruining my good stuff in the winter. That said, I will absolutely wear leather in the snow as long as it's not wet and mucky. Right now in fact, I'm wearing Vince Camuto blinged out moto boots (distressed leather with lots of gold hardware) almost everyday. For total casual wear it's cute snow boots from Sorel and North Face all the way (I have a pair of each). I don't care about keeping myself interested through variety but I do care about the total presentation, even on casual days. So having 3 or 4 pair that cover what I need (evenings out with friends, grocery runs, gym runs, snow shovelling etc) is fine with me. Flat OTK's, and a few pair of lined chunky heeled higher shaft booties are also on heavy rotation.

I have both snow boots and more refined boots made for the elements from Aquatalia and La Canadienne. I do notice many people in my area wearing Hunter rain boots with the liners too. I gave up ruining my leather boots and shoes years ago.

If you get much snow, I would develop a collection of boots and booties that are waterproof. A variety of heights, textures and colors, maybe adding one pair a year as good looking waterproof boots are pricey.

I have a very casual life: no job, walking the dogs, etc. I wear jeans every single day. I live in the west and we've had a lot of weather already, after four years of drought.

I have four pairs of Timberland boots that are waterproof and have good traction. Pictured are two new pairs that I got this year. I also have a tan pair. The fourth pair is dark brown Western style slip ons. These are all good for cold, wet, slippery, icy and a little snow. Obviously if the snow is deep I would wear real snow boots. Anyway, I wore the blue ones when we went to the San Francisco Bay Area for Christmas. The boots were nice for the rainy blustery Christmas Eve, as well as making stops on the way home where it was slippery and icy.

For those of you who live in snowy climates, how do you keep your footwear interesting? I have been pondering this lately. The problem is, even if the pavement is not overly icy and would therefore permit the wearing of a nicer shoe, there is still the issue of puddles of slush and small banks of plowed snow that you inevitably have to walk through. That will quickly ruin a nice pair of shoes, even if worn infrequently, especially when salt is thrown into the mix.

Do you look for booties or knee-high boots with lower, chunky heels that are made from synthetics? Or do you look for thicker leather, such as you might find in a comfort shoe, that might hold up better against the elements? Or do you stock up on snow boots in a few different styles and forget about looking "refined"? Please share your wisdom with me. :)
