Tie your head around that one, Rachy: Lol. Angie slam! Lol. I feel all warm and fuzzy inside. Am *totally* off chewing on that one. May have to go away and come back next year. Because that is so true: no one ever says a stylish person is badly dressed.

More chewables: Ok. Deep, peeps, very deep. Have to make a list and take it up the mountain to a cave. Things to be contended with:

Having a style that isn't stylish, is it still stylish?

Being so unstylish you are therefore not well-dressed

a place to ponder the big universal questions in life: Me too, Gaylene. And my brain is continuing on the eating metaphors, but YLF is very satisfying because you can, frankly, there's something to sink your teeth into. We're talking life the universe and everything here. And it's friendly!

re. Humpty Dumpty: I take Humpty seriously. Hehe.

re. the Olsen Twins: I have to pick up on this one, because I find them hugely inspiring... and they are women I'd offer up as examples of "stylish but not well-dressed." They often look like they're just hauling a bunch of raggedy blankets around, but they do it with such flare. Like, I don't know, letting them hang off one shoulder... (omigosh, I'm cracking myself up, but it's true...)

re. Target: I have this belief that given ten minutes to rush through a store, it would be easier for me to come out of Target looking stylish and easier to come out of Nordstrom looking well-dressed/well-groomed.

re. Well-cared-for: I actually think this is a whole other category, and of higher status than well-dressed.

re. wants for the self, wants because of others: Beth Ann, I think that's a really really interesting observation. I feel the opposite maybe - stylish for myself, well-dressed for others (... oh, maybe I'm Wheat after all, 'cuz I don't give in that much).

Confession: I'm not sure if Kate Middleton is *stylish* or *well dressed*. Mostly I feel her clothes are beautiful...

Rachy, these days, I'm just happy to be dressed at all! Truly, though, when I please myself, I prefer to be well-dressed. When I want to be approved by others, I want to be stylish.

I love the feel of exquisite fabrics, and, as an erstwhile sewer, I feel luxurious and special when I wear beautiful textiles in well-tailored garments. Knowing my hair looks terrific; that my nails are buffed and my jewelry is tasteful and high quality? That would feel amazing, but I'm afraid I would appear too frumpy, and that I would never have enough money or leisure time to make this kind of polish possible.

So, why do I want to look stylish to others? I imagine that being stylish will make me seem younger, thinner, and more, well, relevant. The downside is feeling like your in a rat race that you're bound to lose.

I'm also enjoying this conversation thread! Great brain buster, Rachylou!

One of my favorite philosophies that never fails is, "When in doubt, over-dress." I equate this with Team Polished/Well-Dressed. Wherever I go, whether it's Trader Joe's or a networking event, I'm going to create the most polished, put-together outfit that is a level higher than expected. That's not to say I'm wearing an evening gown to buy groceries, but when I leave the house I'm dressed up. You won't catch me wearing sweats outside the house. For me, as a style consultant, I am a "walking billboard" so clothing is like my work uniform. But I tell all my clients that it pays to look polished everywhere you go because you never know who you're going to meet! That's just how life works. You don't get a memo telling you ahead of time that the CEO of the company you've been after is going to be waiting in the Trader Joe's checkout line behind you.

Re: Target shopping to obtain a polished look, I think it's totally possible, but I agree with several Forum members who pointed out that the fabrication quality and seaming of the clothes at Target is not high so you have to be discerning.

Re: Being stylish, I equate style with many of the European women I see when I travel. They make style look effortless and chic. Simple, clean lines, with the added flair of a beautiful scarf and a delicious leather handbag is the definition of style. To me, style is a formula that each of us calculates and expresses individually. What may be stylish for me would not work on another woman with different coloring, body shape and personality. I think what I'm realizing is we can't separate style from being polished/well-dressed. A polished look expresses your personal style!

Stylish, fashionable, well-dressed--why am reminded of this quote from Alice in Wonderland...

""When I use a word," Humpty Dumpty said, in a rather scornful tone, "it means just what I choose it to mean - neither more nor less."
"The question is," said Alice, "whether you can make words mean so many different things."
"The question is," said Humpty Dumpty, "which is to be master - that's all.""

Ah, yes, am I master of my words? Or do I relinquish control to another person, or even an arbitrary third party like a dictionary. Is Alice right in thinking subjectivity leads to anarchy--or, at least, long-winded discussions that trail off into all kinds of dead ends. Do we need to park our own experiences and thoughts at the door and accept a definition that is imposed by a single authority? Easier said than done when I suspect my half-stocked, half-hearted version of a Target here in Canada in not in the least like Rachylou's Target. My Target or yours? The classic, aristocratic frump of my Milanese ladies, the fashion-forward, trendy-frump of the Olsen twins, and the "I have better things to spend my money on" frump of a classic dresser who shops only at Walmart--are they equals when it comes to applying the "well-dressed" label? Does my wanting to reserve the "well-dressed" label to only certain categories just indicate a narrow-minded attitude to fashion and style on my part?

Rachylou, have you pushed us down a philosophical rabbit hole with your question? Are you laughing in the background? And people wonder why I love this forum--it's not about clothes or fashion, but a place to ponder the big universal questions in life.

Hi, what a great thread, these are the conversations I have so missed!

Personally, I also am more concerned with well-dressed (i.e. groomed, etc.) over stylish. However, in my world, well-dressed is a nice fitting casual top and jeans, so I don't know if this qualifies for everyone's definition of well-dressed!

I also agree with those who think it is possible to be well-dressed from a Target - of course you will not have the longevity you might find at a higher-end store, but in terms of being able to look polished and put-together, yes, I think it can be done. I am picturing a beautiful Auntie of mine who was always impeccably polished in my book, although she bought most of her clothes from discount retailers (i.e. lower end than Target) due to their family budget and priorities. It's almost a little unfair to assume that people without the budget for the quality stuff can't be well-dressed (I know no one had a negative intention here, so I hope I don't sound like I'm pontificating ... definitely not meaning too ... hope you understand what I mean! :) ).

Long story short on the Target question, I think taste will get you a thousand times further than budget, although I'm sure the best-dressed women have a tidy helping of both!

Well, I bat for Team Polished (even though I always fall woefully short), so I have to vote for Well Dressed. But I do think it's possible to be both, and that's what I shoot for.

ETA yes, I think it's absolutely possible to be well dressed even if one only shops at Target. They are kind of killing it these days.

ETA2 oh, that wasn't the question. Would it change my style? Well, yes a bit because I wouldn't have access to the really special, expensive items that can really make an outfit. Target often copies the "special" items but I think it's often all to easy to tell the difference. So I would probably stick to more basic items if I only shopped at Target. A solid red pullover sweater, for example, looks much the same on casual inspection whether it's from Target or Bloomie's. A sheer polyester leopard print shirt from Target, on the other hand, is noticeably less fab than a leopard print silk shirt by Equipment, even at a glance.

ETA3 but never say never. I've found some awesome items at Target. My rainbow print Prabal Gurung for Target pumps come to mind...

All very interesting. And I seem to be nodding my head in agreement with Gaylene's thoughts on this. Funny thing : I've often envied women who can pull together a stylish and well-dressed look from lower/mass priced retailers. T me it's a challenge and takes a very good eye and lots of creativity to do so. I know full well I take the easy way out and rely on certain stores and lines to do the work for me. I wouldn't last 5 minutes in Target or even F21 and H&M as it all looks like garbage to me. I can't help critiquing fabric and construction quality even though that is the price point I really should be shopping in. I'm one of those oh-so-boring dressers who can't quite afford to dress in clothes I like best, but can't cope with the low priced stuff either. So I end up wearing combos from the few stores I frequent and looking rather predictable. I think it takes great skill to look pulled together and well dressed, AND stylish from Target, and I give high -fives to those who can do it. I need lessons. That said - I guess my answer is right in the middle. I figure keeping myself well-groomed and polished is a given, and I can manage that without help, but it is important to me to be stylish too. And I only know how to do that with the help of clothes already well made and stylish enough and presented at the end of a display ready for me to snatch up - as they are in higher priced lines

I was thinking about this and when I popped back I see Gaylene has expressed what I was thinking. KK is polished and groomed IMHO. Not a hair out of place, perfect make up etc however I also do not find her 'stylish', BUT many young women do and what to be like her, hence it is all quite subjective and a matter of one's opinion to a large extent.

For me it also brings up the question of what is "tasteful". For me tasteful and stylish go hand in hand. A woman can be groomed within an inch of her life and present herself in a manner which completely lacks good taste.

You are always welcome to respectfully disagree, Gaylene. And I *think* I see your point - at least I am trying to. I guess I see it more as a black and white philosophy - and you see the grey area. A good point in itself. Subjectively, I would not describe a style like KK's as stylish, and therefore she's not well dressed. Does that make sense?

" I also think you are "well dressed" when you are stylish because there is no one way to be stylish these days. You'll probably never say that someone who is stylish is badly dressed."

Can I respectfully disagree, Angie. If there is no one way to be stylish these days, then I suppose that I might have to be broad-minded enough not to recoil when someone calls the Kim Kardashian look "stylish". I can't fault Ms. Kardashian's grooming or her "polish" (at least from what I see in the magazine photos) but to call someone emulating her skin-tight, barely-there, leave-nothing-to-the-imagination style "well-dressed" seems a bit of a stretch. Same goes for any number of celebrities and personalities who have created distinctive personal styles that push fashion boundaries and "rules" of appropriate attire. Interesting, edgy, creative, innovative, exciting--yes to all of those adjectives, but "well-dressed"? I actually think some of these boundary-pushers would more eagerly embrace the notion of "badly dressed" than "well-dressed".

YES. You can be well groomed, but have little style. You can even be polished but with little style. But can you be stylish without a certain amount of polish and grooming? Personally, I don't think so.

Oh, maybe I do mean Well Groomed and Polished, Angie. But I must ponder because, for example, your polish is capital *S* stylish. It does seem to me a person can be well groomed without polish or style. I probably have the same idea of "well-dressed" as Gaylene above describes.

I think of opening night at the opera, or charity ball, where a place is crawling with women (and men) who spend a ton at the dermatologist, and fly people in to do their hair, and they are in true couture (the frock is actually made for them)... and while they're in fashion, they don't have style - or keep it at a certain mnimum. And, frankly, I think it's done on purpose...

In the past I definitely aimed for personal style vs well dressed. But as I get older, and as the forum has begun to educate me on fit, I'm shifting more towards wanting both at once! Hehe

I dress youthfully now and enjoy it, but as I age I hope my style ages w me, and becomes something more like what Gaylene talks about (or the blogger from Passage des Perles terms strict): that must be my shadow style, just waiting to emerge from my current quaintness! But I suspect it won't gain the upperhand for another decade or two.

Ah, words can be such tricky things because our definitions aren't shared.

When I use the term "well-dressed", I'm describing the look I saw on so many mature women in Milan and other European cities. Yes, those women were polished and well-groomed, but it was the cut, construction, and style of their clothes that caught my eye. Simple, but not simple, if you get my meaning. A belt with the patina of age, but still much more covetable than anything new in the shops. A "simple" sweater, but with a drape that looked like it was made to sit on that particular woman's shoulders for all eternity. A bag that perfectly suited the outfit and the wearer and didn't call attention to itself but was hard to forget once I saw it swinging from the owner's shoulder. Such style, but not in a way that screamed fashionista, or "off the catwalk", or even "see how cleverly I've put together this outfit". More like "this is me and this is how I dress"--regular pants, sweaters, and shoes worn by normal, 45+ women going about their daily routines. Fashionable, stylish young women--the kind whose images abound on most street blogs and who were obviously having fun with fashion--were in full display, of course, but it was these older, "well-dressed" women who fascinated me.

I still think it would be very hard to put together THIS definition of "well-dressed" from most mass market North American chains--at least from the offerings that I've seen available. Maybe it's because, as Angie says, our North American definition of style requires a good dose of current to be considered fashionable? The term "well-dressed" seemed to apply to the women I've described because they didn't seem to be as concerned with currency as their younger counterparts?

Rachy, I think you mean "Well Groomed and Polished", versus "Stylish". Yes. There is a difference. In the extreme, you CAN be well groomed and polished, but look frumpy, dated and not stylish at all. In the other extreme, you can (although it is hard) look stylish in a RATE way. (Unpolished and not that well groomed). RATE looks also translate much better in photography than in real life.

I strive for Style with a good dose of fashion. I don't believe you can be stylish without a component of current in your look. I do however bat for Team Polished. It's natural for me to be polished because I'm a very neat and tidy person. It would be a real stretch for me to look RATE.

Target is interesting to me. I love Target and it's pretty much my home away from home. My #1 interview suit is from Target, and I'm confident I'd be ecstatically happy shopping Target for everything... food, electronics, clothes, etc.

But I think it's fair to say Target is known for quality design first and general quality product second.

My priority is to be well dressed. To me it means doing the best I can, within my budget, to exude a kind of well-cared-for look with my clothes, hair, makeup. It doesn't mean necessarily a neat-as-a-pin look or any certain style, per se. Hard to describe, perhaps. If I had a smaller budget to work with, I'd still aim for that effect. I also want to be stylish, though, to convey a sense of personal style. I think I've always tried to look well-dressed, even as my style and budgets have changed over time.

I think I'm always trying to synthesize those two. (Not saying I succeed; but definitely trying.) I think if you strive to be only well dressed you run the risk of a bland, vacuous valley-of-the-dolls conformity. And if you try only to be stylish it can devolve into a slick, soulless slave-to-fashion vibe. Its at their intersection, the crossroads, where things get interesting!

Well dressed. And yes, I think I could look well dressed with clothes only from Target. Once I gained enough weight that nothing fit. I didn't want to spend a lot on a new wardrobe, so I went to Target. I don't think my style changed and I got lots of compliments. In the process I discovered that one of the best-dressed women in our Agency (and second in command!) was getting a lot of stuff from Target.

I think about Ines de la Fressange and would have to argue that you can be both.
Regarding Target (and here in Australia it's a little different), while they used to be all about a horrible polyester aesthetic, they're also bringing in some much nicer fabrications. Linen dresses and pants, cool cotton tops that look good, shorts that fit (gasp!). So you could be well dressed from there, but granted, you might look a little bit chain-store homogenous if you didn't mix it up a little.

I don't think my figure type lends itself to stylish in the sense of always being up on trends or doing something particular aesthetically. So I aim for well dressed but not so staidly so that it looks like I'm a mannequin or a stereotype.

Re dressing only from Target, I think I could be a happy dresser shopping only there. They've got a wide variety of styles and the quality is actually quite good. I'd much rather try it with Target than somewhere like Old Navy or Forever 21.

Tricky! I put my effort in having personal style I guess, which includes some aspects of well-dressed (let's say fit) but perhaps neglects some others (let's say ironing).
I read this: http://www.nytimes.com/2014/12.....others.htm and I am definitely a wheat eater.

Maybe I've gotten myself in a muddle again, Angie! Hehe, wouldn't be the first time.

But I was thinking well dressed means the clothes are ironed (i.e., well-cared for), of good construction/materials, and properly fitted (whatever the fit may be - tailored, slouchy, etc.)

Stylish, I was thinking, can involve the above, but doesn't have to.

Fashion, I was thinking of as the... idea of the clothing... the shape, the pattern, etc.

...???

ETA: It has to do with how you can look in cute in Target clothes, but it may be rather hard to look well-dressed all the time with nothing but Target clothes...

I, too am having a difficult time separating "well-dressed" and "stylish". I am just not sure how you define the two, as they need not be different. Indeed, in my eyes, someone who is well-dressed creates a stylish look all their own, even if it does not comply with current trends.
