My resolution is to keep my closet exactly the same size it is now, if not even a tad smaller. This means that nothing enters my closet without giving something else the boot. Period!

My fashion resolution is to pay more attention to pant lengths. I finally found time to go through the archive and read Angie's post on PPL, which explains all her comments to me about pant length. I need to let some hems out and/or buy new pants to fill wardrobe holes. I also need to read up on cropped pants since I've noted several comments concerning them on the forum, although this won't affect me much until the temperatures warm up.

Great post. Mine is to go with my inner sense more and not *overthink* my style. I can tend to get up in my head and then completely lose my sense of self and everything I put on when I am doing that looks wrong.

It's been really great to read your replies. It seems like more than just talking about great fit we're also saying that we don't want to "make do." That ideal is something that carries over into all parts of life--not just fashion. That is food for thought for me!

Mine is to wear clothes that fit my "new" body and not get hung up on size. ( I have gained quite a bit of weight because of a medical reason and I want to dress my body for what it is now...... )

There are many fashion bloggers and people photographed on the Sartorialist who do not wear well-fitting clothes. This has actually become a style - and the said people look quite cool. I think that you need several variables on your side for this type of look to work - youth above anything else.

Personally Sarah, I don't want to wear ill-fitting clothing and look cool. I would much rather look chic and polished - and perfect fit has a lot to do with that. Especially when you have a minimalist style.

I hope this makes sense!

This is an excellent goal. I have been trying to live by it this past year and it has really helped improve my own (still very much developing) style quotient. Like you, I used to make do in the past. It was on sale, it was what I needed...why didn't I feel great in it? Now I know why. I have made friends with a seamstress here in town; she likes me because I bring her lots of business; I like her because she does a good job!

That is terrific resoultion, I have been gulity of the same thing in the past, the it will do mentality. And am realizing it wont do. I tell my girls we don't buy something unless we love it and it fits us well. I too will be hitting the closet and purge the things that don't make me feel fab or fit me fab!

That's a brilliant resolution, and I never make resolutions! Fit is everything - and for me, what I've found, is that quality is second. I've made a few purchases in the last couple of months that weren't the best quality I could afford, and they haven't worn well, and look worn and no good now :-(

So for 2012, it must fit, firstly, and be the best I can afford.

Sarah -- in the past couple of years I've come to the same conclusion: fit is everything. The biggest change I've made -- and it's huge, it has opened up all kinds of options for me! -- is buying things that NEARLY fit, and taking them immediately for alteration. I factor in the additional cost, like you. My problem is that I find things all the time that I love but that are just slightly "off," probably because I'm very petite. I can't believe I didn't think of it sooner! I'd always taken pants and skirts in to get hemmed, of course, but discovering that all kinds of alterations can be done with a little dart here or there was a revelation.

Yes and AMEN! I used to shop like that too, Sarah! I would tick off my list of sad, ill-fitting basics and wonder why I didn't feel so fab. I've been a big thrifter in the past and I've been consciously avoiding the thrift shops for the past month or so. I think that will be a loose resolution for me this year. It's really hard to find specific items there and I'm at the point in my wardrobe where I'm looking for something pretty specific. And then there's that fit issue again. I can't tell you how many times I've bought a petite top (I'm long from chin to chest, lol) at Goodwill because it was *almost* perfect in every other way. Nothing kills your style like having the bust darts a few inches too high!

Going along with "the fit" idea: lose the extra weight I am carrying around so that I can fit into my favorite clothes again. Right now, nothing fits properly (think Michelin man) b/c I have a small frame but too much fatty roll on it. I do want to lose for health reasons too, not just vanity. When things fit well, then everything seems ok, even less expensive items.
Second, go for good quality for the dollar spent. I will still thrift, but I have bought cheaper retail in the past year and have regretted it.

Good resolution, Sarah.

My fashion resolutions are two: (1) get rid of things that I don't love and (2) think carefully about what I can wear a piece with before I bring it into my closet. I'd like to have fewer things to style more ways, basically.

I was cleaning my closet and discovered a magazine article I'd clipped a few years ago entitled "Five Things Designers Know That You Should Too." The first style rule - A perfect fit always flatters - really struck me. I've always shopped with a goal in mind and nothing would get in the way of that goal. I was willing to purchase my goal even if it didn't fit.

Well, a month ago I read a blog post from someone who'd attended a YLF gathering. She noted that Angie made fit a top priority. I think that's the first time I realized that my shopping style was really wasting my money.

That being said, my fashion resolution for 2012 is "Buy clothes that fit." And/or factor tailoring into the cost of the garment.

Do you have a fashion resolution for 2012?
