You all look great, and thanks for the fashion report. When I was in Salzburg last summer there was a definite countryside / horse riding vibe happening with a lot of the local ladies, in a very upscale, Barbour and good leather sort of way. It was appealing and could be a lot of fun to replicate.

Excellent tips already, Ummlila. Thanks!

I think the recs for enoteche are very smart. In Ferrara last time, one of our best of many good eating experiences was at a wine bar too.

Do you have any enotecas in Rome you'd highly recommend? xoxo

thanks for the lovely report! Your capsule sounds very nicely put together.
I wish I could talk the Mr into wearing a scarf, but so far, no luck....

I will be in italy teaching over the summer and am working on a travel capsule now! trying to take as few items as possible, but still keep a little fashion flair~
light weight summer scarfs (leopard + white or pale aqua gauze) are already on the list!

Great to hear the fashion news from Italy! Italian fashion seems remarkably consistent through the years to me. They never get costume-y or so I think.

He's Egyptian. But after I compelled him to buy and wear a woven scarf along with his new blazer, he was pleased to find people addressing him in Italian and claimed it was because of the scarf.

The capsule worked well. It would have been better with some comfy heels, though.

My capsule wardrobe:

Black oxfords

Black skinnies

Grey skinnies

Light grey cashmere cardigan

Black and white cardigan (hard to explain but Rachel Comey
and it reads as dressy)

Lavender mesh pullover sweater (would have gone with the
spring dress)

Black blazer

Black military style knitted jacket

Peach lace top

Hot pink t-shirt

Leopard jersey peplum top

Burgundy jacquard knit peplum top

Three scarves (zebra, flower and rabbit dots) in colors
matching tops

Magenta Patagonia nanopuff jacket (not super stylish but so
small I could stuff it in my purse when not wearing it)

Sunglasses

Silver wedges (did not end up wearing after daughter
borrowed and got a blister)

Black ponte pencil skirt (did not end up wearing because it
would have looked weird with the oxfords)

Flowered drapy spring dress (did not end up wearing for the
same reason)

White drapy t-shirt (did not end up wearing)

Salve (Hi) , Mochi.

I am in Keene, NH so I feel your pain. It was 'wicked' hard to come back to snow still on the ground.

Southern Italy is on my radar for the next trip, the sooner the better.

General suggestions for you (some cadged from Rick Stevens):

It might be a little late for you, but I have been learning Italian on the free DuoLingo app. It was really helpful in interacting with people (as is my complete lack of shame about making grammatical errors while I'm trying to communicate.)

Rome was very crowded. If you plan to go to the Vatican Museum (and Sistine Chapel) book your tickets online in advance and you will miss an unbelievably horrible long line and go in a short line instead. If you plan to go to the Colosseum, also book online in advance, or when you get there, follow the signs for the Palatine Hill, and buy your ticket for both venues there. The line was not long (and the man in the kiosk told me it was rarely long). We walked around the hill and then went to the Colosseum, which had an insane ticket purchase line that we completely skipped.

For shopping, the area along Via del Corso in the vicinity of Trevi Fountain, Piazza de Spagna and the Piazza del Popolo is very good, and there are tons of outside restaurants. I like the wine bars (enotecas) often better than the ristoranti.

We will be headed to Rome in a week from tomorrow (with plans to journey down to Naples and the Amalfi coast). It's supposed to snow here tomorrow in Boston. I can't wait to remove myself from this place. I am looking forward to people-watching and enjoying the fun street life, food, art, architecture and friendliness of the locals. Please give us a detailed post if you feel like it.

I just returned from 10 days in Venice, Florence and Rome.
The weather ranged from high 50s to about 72F, and spring was definitely there.
In Venice and Florence, a preppy / English country look was common for women,
and I saw a lot of Barbour-type quilted jackets and tweed for the middle-aged
and up set. Younger women were wearing belted coats to create shape at the waist. In Rome, it was a bit more
high style, and that’s when the warmer weather set in (there were oranges on
many trees in the city), so people’s clothes were not obscured by their coats.

I saw a lot of tailored blazers and pants worn together, but not suits as such.
Drapy woven scarves were definitely prevalent for both men and women.
Hairstyles (beyond the odd Mediterranean 65+ burgundy/eggplant look) were long
and sleek (flatironed, I think) or in orderly French twists. I didn’t see
anyone wearing super-high heels except manikins at Dolce & Gabbana and
their ilk. Neither did I see any of the Vans-style sneakers. Supergas were in a
lot of shop windows, but I didn’t see them on many feet. Jeans were definitely
for the younger women, and they were tucking skinnies into short grey or beige boots
with mesh-like cutouts. I came back feeling like I shouldn’t save my nice
blazers for special occasions, and with a resolution to try pant shapes other
than skinny.

Maybe in another post I’ll talk about the fab leather jacket
and boots I picked up Or how well my capsule wardrobe worked out.

***edit to post: I forgot to mention that the prevalent handbag everywhere was the birkin (double handled softer satchel with flap top and gold clasp)
