Venice was my first time in Italy, way back in the '80s when I was a college student. My travel companion and I had very little money, Venice is supposedly the most expensive city in Italy, but we had a great time and the people-watching was exquisite. Truly, Venetians were amazingly well-dressed and I wish I had been able to capture that sense of style. I was in Venice earlier this year on my honeymoon, but the thing to wear were trench coats and more trench coats. How fun to see another side to this glorious city!</p> <p>We spoke with a mask artisan while there and she said that there are *only* tourists in Venice now - she said it is like a Disneyland. A strange notion that an entire city only functions for tourism, isn't it? You are so right that there is simply no bad view to be found. In fact, when I was alone (I was 25), I got hit on so many times, I lost track. I ended up having cappuccino with an 80-y-old Italian with cataracts who didn't speak a word of English, but just held my hand saying "bambina Americana" over and over again. Here is where the brights and patterns finally appeared. Venice is so full of tourists that it would be difficult to generalize...but, actually many of these tourists are Italians! The streets are narrow and it is pretty easy to figure out who is who if you get close enough to eavesdrop.<br /> #1 scene outside the train station<br /> #2 at the Rialto market - suddenly everyone was wearing brightly patterned dresses - this seemed to be the thing to wear in Venice<br /> #3 cafe scene<br /> #4 DDs hamming it up with their souvenier masks<br /> #5 apart from being a beautiful and very old city, Venice is a giant outdoor shopping mall. The way to San Marco is paved with luxury brands. This Prada window was my favorite<br /> #6 view from Accademi bridge - there is not view of Venice that is not stunning </p>
