Fun to read all the responses. Hard to settle on just one answer, and I'd bet mine change from day to day. Person: I'll say Emmanuelle Alt. Wonderful, paired-down garçonne style with nods to punk that aren't too literal. And I like how unfussy she is with her hair. Patti Smith is another who always comes to mind. Also Elliot Page! And when I want femininity, I look to the Audreys (Hepburn and Tautou).  Place: Any mountain town, anywhere? Innsbruck, South Lake Tahoe, Cusco... I'll take all of them. :) Thing: Hats! I've always been a hat person, always had a substantial collection. Person: it’s a toss-up between Caroline DeMaigret, Cindy Crawford, and Indiana Jones. Their looks are effortless, practical, and curated-yet-current. Yes, even Indy who looks just like the Banana and Ralph Lauren editorials! Place: this is difficult! I have favorite places, but none are super fashion-forward. I guess California as a default :D Thing: texture! The key ingredient I have found will make or break a look for me. If we are talking thing as in, item of clothing - it would be jackets. So many fabulous jackets and they really can change a basic outfit formula in so many ways. I did that once (accidentally) years ago when I was running an intensive outpatient group for teens.  One black bootie, one dark brown.  Did not notice until we were seated in our circle under fluorescent lighting.   Mercifully, none of the teens noticed either or I would have been savaged.  No one is more verbally abusive than a bunch of teens who have been sent to therapy against their will! WNTW is really not worth rewatching, but she gave so MANY of us a firm grounding in style basics, understanding and loving our bodies, and the freedom to build on that however we wished. I also admire her for her frankness about her health and financial issues.  Place: Amsterdam. Greetje led me there, and I was so knocked out by the resident's sense of colour and pattern and texture - and all of it practical enough for riding a bike every day! So inspiring. And the flowers, oh my. Thing(s): Shoes. Even though my needs and preferences continue to evolve, a great pair of shoes will always lift my spirits, and there will never be a day (I hope) that I stop enjoying them. I was thinking about it earlier today because I had trouble with a person... but then I had remembered Helena Bonham Carter and her mismatched shoes at the Golden Globes from 2011- and what she said about having fun. So... Person: Helena Bonham Carter.  "Why not wear mismatching shoes? Who says we can't? I was just having fun. For me, fashion is all about fantasy and putting unlikely things together. That's what I love. I genuinely love dressing up." This epitomises my sassy Shoemaker's Elf style persona.   (Actually, long before that, when going to a black-and-white end of year Christmas party one year, back in 1987, I had apparently worn one black shoe and one white shoe- no photos sadly- which I had forgotten but  vaguely remembered when 2 different women who were there reminded me literally decades later. When I was on the phone to one of these women and said who I was she said "One black shoe and one white shoe, right?" I must have had 2 of similar styles- I vaguely think they were a variation of summer lace-up Oxfords which I have liked for decades also!) I liked Helena Bonham-Carter ever since " A Room with a View" in 1985, and loved how exuberantly crazy she was playing the nasty witch Bellatrix L'Estrange in the Harry Potter movies. Place: I will be boring here and mention again my favorite Hartley's boutique in my city, the branch under 10 minutes drive from home- good quality clothing not actually designer but well made, and with a fantastic little back sales room where I have picked up several gems over more than 5 years.  Thing: Shoes, of course! Is there any doubt? I spend hours trawling around for the perfect ones. Still. My favourite fashion eras - the '60s, '70s and '80s' - are covered.  Places: Hong Kong, Japan, Italy, and the Netherlands. I'll throw in a bit of London too. LOVE the fashion, shopping, and food. And most of all - the street style.  Thing: COLOUR. My whole life, I've found wearing bright colours soothing and energizing. I know her style is planned and curated as a royal and future queen, but the colors, refined silhouettes, reliance on dresses, and sense of tradition strongly appeal to me. As does the care and planning that goes into each ensemble, with an eye to appropriateness on every level: Occasion, location, weather, activity, etc. It's what I've always done when getting dressed for each day. Place: For fashion, the mall. I very rarely go and it's never to just browse, but I enjoy the window shopping and browsing racks in the department stores. For sewing, the LA garment district. It's great fun to focus on the shops selling nice wools, silks, and linens. Thing: A dress. Just like Bijou and Sal! Dresses (the right cut) fit me easily - rare with any other garment - and also suit me the best. They are comfortable and I'm at ease. They take a minimum of coordination and rarely have to be adjusted in any way while wearing. Besides her extensive closet, her vast knowledge fashion and styling, i'm impressed with her business savvy. she seems to be someone who really understands how to use new media to create and grow a business Place:  any shopping district in any city. i love looking around at shops i can't afford as much as i do in shops i can, and i love watching people.
