Wouldn't you know... the place for a good navy pencil skirt would be the UK. Of course!!! (I wonder if M&S owns BB still... and if Brook's would have navy pencils too...) You're right about the bank manager look. It has to be a real pencil skirt, not a straight skirt.

Your peeps are preppier than Charlottes *plonk*

Rachy, here is a proof of the existance of the little navy pencil
http://www.johnlewis.com/Women.....ppNmRXRg==

Just say no to whales! I am DYING over here! But I really do think you can still do preppy and have it come across with a more sophisticated vibe. For instance, I know it's so old but Charlotte York (Sex and the City) was a full on "adult" prep but her character was not little girl at all. At least not to my eyes.

You don't have to buy into the whole thing. Just the chic-er finds, without the kitch. How much discipline can it really take to just say no to whales?

Has anybody ever seen a pencil skirt in navy?

I have to say, there's something a little girl about my style. Eh, it's true, arrested development does kinda come with the preppy territory. However, I am getting older now and would like to do so with some dignity. A navy pencil would be more sophisticated, older... and but not so femme fatale as a black one, which is not me I must say.

Rachy, if you are drawn to the preppy but don't want be Full On with it how about looking for a navy pencil and then donning the rest of the outfit the same way? One not-so-preppy item might make you feel better about the idea of the outfit. (Your descriptions are always a gas to read, by the way!)

@Claire - You have me thinking now. I have a brown sweater, but I think I'd be getting into the brown-doesn't-go-with-black problem if I tried it with my existing black A-line skirt. This brown is too dull. Thinking about it, a lot of the appeal has to do with the "dark on dark". I have to see what sort of sweaters I have on the darker, richer side when it comes to color.

@Jules - The thought of a navy pencil crossed my mind. It wouldn't be the same as the skirt in the window and it could be even harder for me to find than a black pencil, but...

@shabbychick, Mama Susie, Mo - Oh the anguish! I need to come to grips with the preppy thing. I'm drawn and yet mortified. It is a horrible thing to be in a room full of other people also in crewneck sweaters and architectural glasses. You know you're doomed in a way that you'd never feel in a room full of hoodies and flip flops. And the urge towards turtlenecks with little whales becomes overwhelming when you give in just a little bit in other areas...

@Una - That IS a good litmus test. I do like having a distinctive style, but I'm also a little afraid of being trapped by it...

@Rae & Gaylene - Deep thoughts, deep thoughts (!!) I'm not sure if I'm being driven by personal style goals or am just being caught in the style undertow of my surroundings. I have a feeling... the pencil skirt is undertow.

@Denise - My high school senior shirt was purple and gold tie dye! I'll never forget working on Telegraph, selling tie dye tees, when this tourist comes in and says, "Tie dye! What a fab souvenir idea!" And I was *all like*, "Honey, people are still wearing these as real clothes..." LOL

Argh! I just purged a navy cotton A-line skirt (Eddie Bauer). I think it went to the SoCal swap. I loved the idea of it, but in reality, navy cotton fades very quickly and starts to look like charter school uniform fare. I think you're right that it would take an expensive or better made version to get it right. But you should definitely copy the silhouette of this outfit! There is nothing wrong with simple, preppy chic. Would it be all wrong with your black A-line?

Are you happy with your past/current style? Or are you feeling you want, or need, a change now that you are moving into a different lifestyle-- "the girl in the black pencil skirt" look?

Going through a lifestyle change always contains a bit of looking back, as well as looking forward. If you think this outfit fits in to where you want to be a year from now, then it's probably "you". If you have doubts, it might just be a bit of nostalgia for your (implied) grosgrain headband past brought about by walking through your old environment.

I think the difference is made through your style goals. Do you feel a more urban/pencil skirt look is the direction you aspire to and want to move in? If so, then hold out for a pencil. But if you just feel it's part of an urban "uniform" and that the A-line and preppy look fits who you are inside better, then go for that one! Stay true to yourself, whether your heart is pulling you one way or the other.

I pondered this earlier, the quandary of style groove vs. style rut. Isn't the idea of having your own style for someone to be able to look at an outfit in a window and say "That is SO Rachylou!"? Would that make you happy or would it make you feel like a cliche of yourself?

Rachylou, no help from me here but you really had me LOL with your hilarious description.
If you really like preppy why not just wear the heck out of it? I think preppy can actually look very sophisticated and "adult" depending on the way it's styled.

I don't understand why, if you absolutely love something SO MUCH that days later you are still thinking about it, you can't get it? There is no need to be so married to a certain style that you can't be adventurous. You are still young enough for your style to evolve quite a bit! Maybe you are so drawn to that outfit because it suits the REAL YOU!

So... I'd been thinking to get more sophisticated and adult, as befits my new Gotham-like environment, and get a black pencil skirt.

But this weekend I went back to the 'burbs, dog walking with my friend. Passed by one of my old favorite stores and have become fixated on the outfit they had in the window. I am still thinking about it two days later. I have to tell y'all it's the plainest, boring-est outfit of all time: navy A-line skirt, white button down, brown crewneck sweater (thrown over the shoulders).

How many ways is this outfit wrong: We're talking another A-line skirt (tho I don't have any navy ones). We're talking expensive (you don't make boring look so sharp on the cheap). We're talking so preppy, someone is gonna need a Heimlich due to gagging on the implied grosgrain headband (tho the pieces hardly need to be worn as shown).

Anyways, I don't need anything beyond my black A-line skirt, right? If anything, I should try to stick to the plan for a pencil skirt, right?
