It happens to me regularly.
I am a sucker for color shine, practicality goes right out of my thoughts.

Yes, a tomato red Kate Spade bag. It is my favorite. My second favorite is also a departure from neutral, an aqua leather tote. Favorite neutral of all time is silver metallic, which was scarey at first. You can wear any color with Angie's hint of forming a compliment with the same color in footwear and scarf or some other accessory. The colors do not need to match, just blend, and may be part of a pattern.

Yes I look at colour first, then size and shape.

And like you I am a more functional bag person - they have not been a priority for me. But.....I am thinking of spending a bit more on a new one this winter.

Yes. I think it should still be functional— for one or more of your roles or occasions- but is fine/ great to be a color crush. For example I’ve been drawn to a bag due to cold but then foun the handles/ strap annoying, or a clutch might be too small now for what I carry, or sometimes the clasp is too weird and I’ll never fool with it— so I walk away. But luscious color in something that IS a functional handbag- then I have to decide, well, maybe something will just need to get tossed to make room for this.
And certainly if it’s returnable I will bring it home and see if it passes the home mirror test with outfits.

Yes! I have a tomato red purse and matching wallet that I bought for no reason other than love. I don't use it often, but it's the perfect pick-me-up when I'm feeling blah, and comes out especially in the spring. I think you'll enjoy your statement purse!

Kate - it wasn't me. Maybe Merwoman? I think Angie may have one as well, if I'm thinking of the same one.

GF - I just bought a bag last night! Only my second online fashion purchase (after my ball skirt!). I'll reveal once it comes in, but I'm mighty excited about it! It seems to be the most 'me' of any bag I've seen or owned.

Like you, I've been depending on a big black LePliage for the work commute. Great for schlepping EVERYTHING. It makes me happy because 'practical' and 'useful' make me happy. Also, good craftsmanship ticks a box. However, the LePliage doesn't spark joy the way something bold or colourful does.

Maybe this new bag is one of those 'French Five' - something that is bought with emotion and a nod to frivolity or trendiness and could become a personal fashion treasure?

Hmm, this is an interesting question. I've never felt any hesitation about bags in wildcard colours, probably because a) my outerwear is almost always neutral and b) I don't buy high-end bags, so bright colours don't feel as risky I guess.

I hope we get to see this new bag crush of yours.

It has happened to me. I have had a few gorgeous bags catch my eye and follow me home. Most are great neutrals, but a blue faux alligator Dooney and a tomato red Kate Spade earned places in my closet and my heart. I have no regrets.

Yes, it has happened to me a few times. The strangest case was a light yellow purse I saw some years ago and immediately fell in love with despite the fact that I had (and still have) very few other yellow items in my closet. However, it followed me home, and I still wear it quite often in spring, summer and fall. It always lifts my spirits and often wins compliments from others.

Yes. I broke from the "practical" when I bought this blue backpack, and have never regretted it for a moment. It's one of my signature colors so it more than earns its place in my wardrobe.

Time to add exciting and glamorous to your practical and timeless collection perhaps?sometimes something that speaks to us emotionally like a colour can trigger a purchase that takes us out of our usual style and adds a new dimension to our wardrobe.I m an eclectic shopper and am always disappearing down different style routes ,unplanned ,as a result but it keeps me happy and stimulated with fashion.

My purse collection is small and functional: a large black Pliage for travel/commuting, a small black crossbody with a silver chain top handle, a silver metallic clutch for parties, and a fanny pack for running errands. More often, I tote a large canvas bag because heading out is frequently synonymous with running errands. I’ll be the first to admit that even though I put a lot of care and consideration in choosing my bags, my collection isn’t exciting or glamorous, but practical and timeless.

That may come to an end.

I found a purse (which shall remain anonymous for now) online in the most gorgeous colour, which would break a ~15 year streak of neutral bags. I had an opportunity to look at different models today, and the real life colour was pretty close to what I saw depicted online. This colour just evoked and brought to the fore my style descriptors —not necessarily descriptors you’d see reflected in my more practical, quotidian outfits, but ones that I feel are more me.

Has this ever happened to you? And did you go home with the purse?
