I have been interested in fashion and its history since forever! My mother was very stylish and made many of her own clothes, as well as mine. As a child I had two dolls that I loved, Ginny and Jill by Voque, ( this was just before the Barbie era) and my mother made wonderful wardrobes for them, too! I've lived through the fifties, sixties, etc. and I love to see how things come around again, how to adapt what's current to my own personal style, etc. Where I live there are museums that sometimes have exhibitions of clothing, ( RISD, some of the mansions in Newport, RI) , so there are opportunities to see some beautiful things. My dream is to see a real couture garment and be able to touch it and see exactly how it's made. A wonderful book is "The Language of Clothes" by Alison Lurie.

Suz - same! I am also interested in 19th century literature. In fact my English units at uni were almost all in that area (I had a history/English major). And would you believe that I have a magnet my Mum gave me from the Bata shoe magazine on my fridge!

Style fan - I remember doing projects too - though in my case in high school. I did one on the history of underwear (possibly my only 100% assignment ever) and one on fashion silhouettes and how they interacted with the history of a particular time.

Rachylou - I can tell from your fab Fashion Era posts about your rich mine of oral history!

Thanks Shevia and Angie for chiming in too.

Hmm. Maybe through a living oral history. My parents and aunties and uncles reminisced about clothing quite a bit...

I have always loved fashion and fashion history. I did projects in elementary school on fashion history and I made costumes for school plays in university. If I could draw I would have studied fashion but alas I can only draw stick figures. Probably better that it is a hobby.

I have always been quite interested in fashion history, Anne. And social history generally. Some of my interest probably derived from my interest in 19th century literature. But it sounds as if for you, it was a real passion! Maybe someday you can come to Toronto and visit the Bata shoe museum; their historical display is fascinating.

I think my interest in fashion history followed my interest in thrifting. I like to research the labels that I find, which led me to lots of information about different eras and how to recognize clothing from different decades. Then it grew as I learned more about how older trends influence current ones and on and on from there.

I was wondering if anyone else was, like me, had an introduction to fashion via an interest in fashion history.

Mine pre-dates entering school and by the end of year one my parents had given me a book on "clothing through the ages" for Christmas. In the next couple of years I devoured every book on the subject in my school and local libraries. I think it also introduced me to social history, another life long interest.

It wasn't til "Lady Di" came on the scene that I was really aware of what was happening in current fashion. And not til my teens that I was particularly interested in following it, though even then I often wore my own retro stuff not really related to current teenage looks.

Anyone else?
