@rachylou - YUP! I often pair the yoga pants with a sporty zip-up jacket and a sporty tank top. I can seriously live in those.

I agree, KatieKat. I think people in "yoga" pants look cute. Basically they're knit jersey flares. Flares are like universally flattering. I'll admit if you wear the sport bra top and ratty fleece with them, that's a little grungy, but otherwise...

I wear the same yoga pants and sports tank top to my Weight Watcher meeting every week. That way it doesn't change my loss numbers. Mental, I know. But almost everyone at the meeting is doing something similar, so I don't stand out. I wouldn't feel comfortable running errands in my not-very-flattering yoga pants, but I see lots of people wearing the sporty look at the grocery store.

Shiny, I find this interesting, as I also walk for most of my errands. But I will wear my gladiator sandals and skirts and whatnot for these walks. Running is the only time I wear gear for these errands. Maybe because running *requires* gear such as a sports bra and proper shoes, whereas you can walk in all kinds of clothing. Ditto for yoga. I don't ever wear yoga clothes, unless I'm actually doing yoga practice. I don't lounge in my yoga stuff or wear it out to the store. I personally find it really strange that some people buy expensive yoga gear and never actually do yoga!

I don't belong to a gym. We live in an urban area and are within walking distance of grocery store, drug store, cobbler, dry cleaner, etc, etc. I often motivate myself to go for a walk by combining errands with the task, killing two birds with one stone. In fact, my dentist has never seen me in anything but gear, because her office is exactly 1.5 miles away.

Technically, I could walk these errands in ballet flats or cons and jeans, and I have done that too, particularly if DH is joining me and we are planning to pop in somewhere for lunch or dinner during our loop. But it's not as comfortable and I am loathe to walk too briskly, work up a sweat and muss my nice clothes.

If the errand requires a car, then I change out of gear, no matter how brief the errand, no matter if I come right back home and change back into gear. It's funny but I often feel foolish for changing just because I'm getting in the car! I used to dress up just to pick the kids up from school or their friends' houses ... even if I wasn't even getting out of the car. Then again, I also still have a mental block about wearing gear to an airport. My mom taught me to dress nice when going to an airport (even if you are just picking someone up and not flying).

Yes, I do. I to to the gym after work several days a week, and if I have an errand to do after that, I will do it even though I'm still in my gym clothes. Largely because I know myself well enough to know that if I went home to change, I wouldn't make it out of the house again and the errand wouldn't get done! I do towel off and put on a warm-up jacket so I'm reasonably decent.

I will admit I was a little embarrassed one day when I was in court and a lawyer mentioned he'd seen me at the supermarket in my short workout shorts the night before!

I have to add that I have been known to run to the wine store and run home. I mean, dripping sweat, mp3 player in the ear, full on. I apologize if I actually sweat on the credit card machine, seriously. But I don't have a car here and I see nothing wrong with combining exercise and errands when it is as hot out that the thought of going out twice makes me melt just thinking about it. Again, if I am only doing the errand, and not going for a run, I will put on real clothes. Will run for wine lol. guess I'm getting practice if I ever have to play football and be a running back, I'm good at tucking it in the crook of my arm

SusanH- I schedule my gym time and work-out time for mornings and then I come home and clean up before running errands. I don't do my hair before hand so I rarely to never run out for a quick errand, and afterward I'm a sweaty mess so again I don't grace the public with my presence.

BUT... I do admit that on a day that I am lounging at home (it's usually jeans and a hoodie) I will run out for that gallon of milk or loaf of bread. I actually don't currently own any long yoga pants... I work out in short pants. But when I find a pair of flattering long black knit pants, I won't hesitate to buy them for loungewear.

I have to confess that my worst offences are to Home Depot. If I'm planning a day at home painting, I will throw on junk and run in at 6AM to buy my paint. I think nothing of running back over there during the day for anything that I realize I need. Last week it was in shorts,a tank top and baseball cap.

In defense of those who do run errands in gym wear, I just think it's just realistic. We're not talking going out socializing or to a party. We're talking picking up dry cleaning or a few groceries, right? We are busy moms juggling a lot on our plates. Working out has become a normal part of our lives and I see nothing wrong with appearing in public on occasion before or after said workout. Make up for it the rest of the time, and don't feel guilty when you do stop in at the store looking less than catwalk ready. Just my humble opinion

In all seriousness though... I would really love to learn from those who manage to keep their gym clothes out of the rest of their lives.

If you work out 3 or more times a week (let's call "working out" anything you wear a sports bra for) and you never appear in public in your gear unless you're running, or in direct transit to the gym... How have you made this work? Do you find it difficult to fit these exercise sessions into your schedule? What's your secret? Please inspire me that it's possible to change my ways.

I have gone out in workout gear for all of the reasons described above, plus I am an 'exercise opportunist' - I sometimes put the gear on just in case I get a chance to do some running or step ups! This is usually when I'm out at the park with my kids. The park is across from our house and we end up there several times a day, so my kids would probably go a bit bonkers if I insisted on being well-dressed and neatly coiffed every time!

It's so funny how we have different tolerances for this, especially considering how many women run around all day everyday in gear and never give it a second thought!

I always figure if I run into someone I know on an errand after I've been out running, at least they'll know I work on staying healthy. I get so red-faced after running that it's obvious I've been exerting myself and not just hanging out in Target. I just try to make sure I've cooled off a bit first -- I was a little embarrassed the time the cashier in the local bakery asked me if I was ok. It's hot in there!

It depends on the pants. I have one pair I recently bought that I can't decide if they are meant to be knit "office" trousers or workout gear. I have worn them to run errands in (and on a flight!) but in both cases I wore them just like I would jeans, with appropriate flats, top, jacket, bag, etc.

No. This is an absolute rule for me. Mainly because I would be unbearably mortified if I ran into someone I knew. I actually take a change of clothes and shower at the gym if I need to do errands on the same run. I'm sure my life would be much easier if I were less neurotic.

I do this. I do this a lot especially on weekends when I am trying to combine my work out with some errands. But it cost me. Very recently, while running around doing errands, I ran into a coworker and his wife. It was so embarrassing that I ducked into the J Jill and purchased an entire new outfit to wear. I went back to the scene of the crime to see if I could find my coworker a second time. No such luck. I did learn my lesson though. I have not run errands in gym clothes since.

Yes, I too combine errands with visiting the Gym since they are in the same area.
I usually start each day in workout gear for walking the dog, and sometimes don't actually get around to changing, especially if there is no other outing planned for that day.
Hence my D.H. has said I must be the 'Sporty Natural' dresser, 'cause he often doesn't see me during the day when I am actually 'dressed' properly!

If I have been actively working out, yes, it has happened. I shopped at TJ Maxx last year after a 5K because it was in the same city, and didn't realize I still had my race number on! But I would not drive 20 extra miles both ways just to change - that's not only silly, but environmentally irresponsible!
On the other hand, if I'm just doing a quick errand and working out has nothing to do with the schedule, I do not wear yoga or running clothes. I wear yoga gear to do yoga and I wear running gear to run. You know, like wearing pajamas to sleep and not to go buy milk!

Yes, on occasion--in the same kind of situations Suz and Susan and Ann described, or sometimes if I'm feeling really sick or exhausted or have been doing major housework but need to get the kids outside in our complex's courtyard for a while for their sanity.

I think I end up doing this maybe once a week or less. I figure 15 minutes out of all of that time is not so bad.

I often walk to and from the gym and do my changing at home, so that de facto means I' seen in public in workout wear (the horror!!) Then I sometimes compound matters by stopping off at the drugstore or the stationer's on my way home (horrors again!) Like Janet, I just try to make up for it the other times. And I don't make it a daily practice.
