Hi Sterling -- just crossed posts. I think you are right to pass along wardrobe items that are difficult to style and are not bringing you any joy in wearing. (I have started my own Goodwill bag.) Great idea to assess the tees and lighter weight tops now that Spring is here. I think I will start doing that next week. Those Athleta crop pants are terrific. (How did I miss that post?) Enjoy your vacation day and your weekend.

Joy -- Safe travels today. Enjoy your trip. Sterling -- Hope you have a pleasant, restful day off after your exhausting work week. Thanks for your compliments about my shoes. I am wearing mostly comfortable flats these days due to some orthopedic issues… a lot of Hush Puppies (shoutout to Joy!), Clarks, Naturalizers and Sperrys. I have learned to embrace comfort brands. :-)

Lovely weather day here! I will be heading out to have lunch with a friend at a local Vietnamese restaurant… very casual place. Going boho light today. Orphan is a pair of flared jeans that I bought last fall but have not yet been worn (probably due to winter wet weather issues). I will be pairing the jeans with a knit cocoon dress (tunic length on me), poncho, gray booties and fun, boho-ish jewelry.

So, a vacation day for me. I have roofing and ATT contractors coming to the house and I am ultra casual.

I am wearing the athleta cropped pants Janet found a few years ago. I am pairing the cropped pants with a cropped tee shirt from Everlane. The tee shirt from Everlane is my unworn item.

This tee shirt should have worked brilliantly for me, but it is cut literally in the shape of a box. I prefer not to be seen in public in this shirt. This is another one of those items that I try to make work but am never happy wearing it. I keep it solely because I like the length on me.

Earlier in this challenge I worked with button down shirts and found I do like wearing them again. I just need to accept the fact that I prefer someone else to press them. A big win.

Now that the summer months are here, I am starting to assess my unworn tee shirts (black Caslon, white Everlane) and I am finding them lacking. I *could* try to find work arounds for the tee shirts, but I wonder why bother? I will never really enjoy wearing them.

Everlane tee shirt: GOODWILL.

So -- total fail on that planned outfit. Weather is way too warm for those pants. I will hold them for next week when temps go back to normal seasonal range. Wearing the white button down, which will be my orphan for the day. Pairing it with new crop flares, snakeskin flats and silver jewelry. I feel better!

You are a sweetheart, Sterling, but I probably can't wear a large, especially in the Calson brand. Even their smallest sizes are not cut for the small of chest. Since you like the shirt otherwise, I was hoping my suggestion would help you find a way to continue to wear it.

Sterling -- Good for you taking a vacation day on Friday. (Enjoy!) I love that black sheer tee… but I know what you mean about it being problematic. I, like Joy, wear some type of cami under those types of garments -- but I guess that adding the extra layer kind of defeats the purpose of wearing something sheer and lightweight. Joy -- Love your whiteout ensemble! You looked lovely in it. The cream sneakers are fabulous. Enjoy your road trip. Where are you heading? Good luck with your packing today.

It is going to hit 70 degrees today -- but it will be rainy by the time the temp goes up and might feel cooler. So… I have two plans for today, using the same orphan item -- a pair of wide leg plaid pants. This is another item that I wore to death when I worked in a more formal environment. It is also an item that I tend to wear only in shoulder seasons (too hot for late Spring or Summer, and wide legs do not work for slushy Winters). I will wear it with either a white button-down (a semi-orphan, worn in shoulder season only) and some silver jewelry, or with a hi-low long sleeve merlot tee and burnished gold jewelry. I will decide later this morning according to how warm it gets before I leave the house. Either way, I will probably wear black shooties with this outfit.

Joy. This tee shirt is Caslon from Nordstrom. I bought it last year, but there will likely be some version of it this year. Can you wear a Large? If so, I will ship it to you (after I wash it).

This is a sharp looking outfit. I have actually been looking for sheer black tops as the sheerness seems to soften the black. I wear a black bra and black silk LLBean cami underneath. I hope that you have a productive day.
Tomorrow we will be driving all day for the start of a 2 week trip, so I'll be packing and cleaning today and trying to remember everything. Living out of a small suitcase I probably won't be posting much but will be reading to try to keep up with this site.

I have had one of the longest and exhausting work weeks in a while. I have to somehow motivate myself to tie up loose ends today, but I am taking Friday off as a vacation day. I am going to wear my white jeans and a black tee shirt (unworn item because it is sheer and you can see my bra though it).

This is the last remaining tee shirt in my wardrobe that is this sheer. I discarded all the others. I've made it a point not to buy any more.

I kept this one because it fits well and black comes in handy. I try to camouflage the sheerness with a black bra. Doesn't really work, but is ok for working at home. This tee shirt will be out the door as soon as I find a suitable replacement.

Wednesday. My second outfit today. This time orphans are the linen pullover and cream sneakers because I've tended to save them for something more than just an average day ,yet both pieces have a short window of comfort time, being long sleeved and full length. It looks like I should have the jeans shortened a bit. I wanted to wear the scarf just draped loose around my neck but it is too slippery to stay.

ElCee, this is a great outfit with its black and white theme. The style of your flats is my favorite, but I am between sizes in Clarks and have never gotten a pair to fit comfortably. I have a pair of similar Hush Puppies that should be replaced soon. Maybe it is time to try Clarks again.

Joy -- That is a very nice casual outfit. You look great. (I love the double denim!) The jeans are that perfect shade of grey -- not too warm or too cool in tone. I love the KUT brand, so I may have to go check them out at Nordies. Laceless cons -- what a great idea! (I have the high instep thing going on, so I avoid high vamp lace ups. Will have to try this option.)

Almost embarrassed to post today because I am in "messy day" attire as I will be cooking and baking. Not wearing my best -- in fact, my semi-orphan is a "save for bad" item (polar opposite of Sterling's "save for good" stuff). I have a collection of older knit tops that are comfy and easy to clean. Not very stylish, but I do not care. I hang onto them for just these sort of days. So here goes -- eons old print knit top, stone slim boyfriend jeans (same as yesterday), black cocoon sweater, simple silver huggie earrings and "knocking around" house shoes. Will not win any fashion awards today -- but neither will I scare the UPS guy.

El Cee, thank you for understanding. I will probably change later for class but my outfit today has several seldom worn items.
The jeans are from NAS and have been great for cool/cold weather, but it is getting too warm for them as they are a heavy denim.
The tee is a bit big and the white stripes have a slight ivory tint. Probably the biggest reason it doesn't get much wear is because I have too many striped tees in rotation.
The denim jacket is a favorite but the denim has a kind of tan over-dye which makes it look more RATE than my style.
The lace-less Cons have been worn heavily in the past and are worn now more for around home. They don't hurt the top of my feet like laced versions do.

Joy -- I sooooo understand about buying wardrobe items for a fantasy climate. I love the idea of wearing jackets as a third piece but, in the dead of winter, do not like the bulk of a jacket underneath my outerwear (even though I have coats that will accommodate them). And I have a very short window in which I can wear these same jackets as outerwear. You are right about weight of blouses and pants. Once May hits I just cannot tolerate certain fabrics and sleeve lengths. Real food for thought here -- thanks for pointing this out.

I love your oufit for today. The colors are so rich and lovely. And I really like the pattern mixing of the floral sweatshirt with the animal print accessories (Flora and Fauna). Those Smart Wool footies are such a great idea for this transitional weather.

Yes, Sterling and El Cee, that is exactly the problem...weather. They are buying mistakes for a fantasy climate. Anything with long sleeves, light jackets, long non-warm pants and even some jeans. I think that I will wear those jackets and long sleeves under another piece, when it is bitter cold even that is not appealing. In summer even short sleeves tees and blouses are too warm to be comfortable. It does not cool off here at night and is a humid heat. For that reason, cotton knits are miserable.
Today I am wearing burgundy jeans, a sheer winter floral sweatshirt top over a cotton tank and leopard flats with Smart Wool footies. The long sleeved sweatshirt top is one of those transitional pieces although I did try it over a traditional cashmere pullover and that was ok.

Hi Sterling and Joy. Like both of you, I am in the process of putting away my "deep winter" clothing (flannel shirts, bulky pullovers, sweater dresses, boots, etc). Joy -- My gosh -- Your recent outfits are beyond gorgeous, especially #1 and #3. You wear those soft colors so well. I adore the long vest in #2. It looks great with the "orphaned" striped tee. I just had a light bulb moment after reading your thoughts about your own orphan wardrobe items, especially this part -- "Weather has contributed to their disuse if they are not warm enough for winters here but too warm for summers." I have the same issue. I find that certain "transitional" pieces get less frequent use… e.g. button-down shirts, lightweight jackets and cardigans. Now that my wardrobe is in that narrow transitional window, I need to wear some of those pieces. Today, my orphan is one of those transitional pieces that I often ignore… a lighter weight knit jacket/cardigan. I used to wear it a lot when I worked in an office environment. Now it mostly sits in my closet. I am attempting to style it casually today in keeping with my present lifestyle. Pairing it with a solid V-neck tee, stone colored skinny boyfriend jeans, pewter suede boat shoes and some gunmetal jewelry.

Hi Joy. So what I am hearing you say is that for some of your clothes, you have a shorter window of weather-opportunity to wear them. I think that is actually good news. They are not orphans or buying mistakes. Yay for you.

I am starting to pack away winter stuff too. It is so time consuming. But when I done, I will have a completely NEW wardrobe in my closet.

Take care both you.

Sterling and El Cee, I had a busy weekend but tried to continue wearing some orphans. Your outfits look great. Sterling, the silver and grey with teal is inspiring. El Cee, the sweater vest is full of lovely texture as well as pattern.
I am starting to pack away wool sweaters, sweater dresses and boots, but am only able to hand wash a few at a time due to limited drying space.
1: Sunday for church and art gallery. The orphans are the blouse and shoes.
2: worn for a meeting. The orphan is the boat-neck striped tee.
3/4: worn today. Blush with white. I seldom wear the blush tee because it is a bit sheer, but wore a blush tank under it. The jacket does not get much wear either. I liked it today. Tee untucked and tucked. I tried a semi-tuck but it is just too long to drape well.
Some items are in Finds below. Sterling, I am learning that my orphans mostly need time put into better styling. Weather has contributed to their disuse if they are not warm enough for winters here but too warm for summers.

Thanks Sterling. Hope your travels are going well. Quick report -- I am wearing 4 infrequently worn pieces today: Pale gray skinny jeans, gray/coral tunic sweater, sterling silver choker and a heart locket bracelet. Also wearing pewter driving mocs as my indoor shoes. Going for total comfort today.

Sterling -- Wow - Love that striped sweater! The color combo is fabulous. Hope you enjoy wearing it today. And, yes… where is that beautiful Joy? Wherever you are Joy -- hope you are enjoying your weekend. Another Yay for you Shedev! Down to only two sweaters to evaluate? You have mastered this challenge. Kudos.

An at home day for me. Today's orphaned item is a lovely cultured pearl set (necklace and bracelets) that I wear only occasionally. I need to pull this set out more often. I will wear the pearls in a casual context with teal slim straight jeans, a heathered gray tee/tunic, silver huggie earrings and pewter suede boat shoes.

I didn't even realize I failed to post my outfit yesterday. I was focusing on next week and failing to live in minute. Here is what I am going to wear today. A pink cotton sweater that I absolute love and yet never wear. I love the color. I love the fit. I love the cotton against my skin. It goes with so much of my wardrobe, but I especially love with grey pants.

There is no reason that I can think of that explains why this sweater is unworn. Once I have it on, I always marvel at how infrequently I wear it. I moved it to a more prominent place in my closet, thinking I don't see it enough to remember I own it.

I'm going to end when the last few items have been worn and pick it up at the end of summer with tees and tanks. I'm down to a couple sweaters.

Sterling -- This challenge has been so good in helping me to evaluate why some things I have in my wardrobe are not getting worn. I thank you (from the bottom of my heart) for starting this. I have learned a lot from you and Joy (and Janet's threads) over the last few weeks. Even when you choose to end the formal challenge, I know I need to carry this practice into Spring, at least informally -- perhaps doing this kind of thing a couple times a week. I still have a few weeks in transitional clothing (before I even pull out all my warm weather stuff) and there is plenty to analyze with those items.

So… does the challenge end with a change of season? Just went back to your original thread in which you stated "I plan on continuing this challenge until my thinking evolves to the point of 'why am I saving this, I deserve to wear this' or six weeks (whatever comes first)." You already have had a very big epiphany about your button downs and probably other items as well. You may be at that point.
