Lesley- think someone needs to bring that point up with Angie.;-)

Robin- me too. Hate it in my hometown newspaper also. Are there not proof readers anymore or does everyone on computers skip spell and grammar check too? Of course I have to read what I wrote before I hit send because between typing and autocorrect (aarrgghh) my writing is not necessarily better.lol
Lisa- totally with you there girl. I think self publishing has in many ways, done everyone a disservice. But then there are a select few that are really good and you wonder why they had to go the self publishing route. Look at how many rejections JKR got on Harry Potter series. Lots of folks kicking themselves on that one.
Thanks for input and recommendations- love it.

Some of these books aren't worth the paper they are printed on , and it makes one wonder - why?? Who thought they were worth publishing?? I really enjoy Alyson Walsh's two books , and have a few others from random writers still in my collection .( Ines' book among them)

Sounds pretty bad, things like that bother me in a book and once I start noticing I can't ignore it. I especially hate typos in a book I have bought! Drives me crazy.

Um, why is there no YLF book???

Honestly, team, I am an editor/writer, if you ever want to chat. Normally I would offer my ghostwriting services but you are really strong writers. If you have any desire for proposal writing/brainstorming, drop me a line!

Rachel- you are so right. There were also typos which made me think it was a kin to many of the ebooks you have to look out for. After your comment I googled the publisher- never heard of them- but they came up as a very new Indy company started in 2016, so this may very well have been their first publication. How smart are you recognizing it!

Aurore- I bought the book because I saw it mentioned on an “over 60 blog” talking about fashion dos and don’t of our youth. Blog said it was a fun read and IT WAS! It’s a big difference when you know you are getting a piece of nostalgia rather than being suckered with a new publication that doesn’t pass muster.

Stevia- it is on my watch list. At the moment it is too pricey here for a “ fun” read. I like finding a good quality fashion bargain - but I love a great book bargain even better- lol.

Firecracker- right? One should not have to yell at a book. It’s like watching those thriller movies where you are screaming at the TV saying “ don’t go down into the basement you fool” lol

Sis I- why indeed! Actually YLF has cut in on my book reading time- too funny.

Thank you for the advice!
Side note : it's fun that you mention Geneviève Dariaux's book, as just yesterday I bought a copy of it. The neighborhood where I live was designed and built during the 60s, with a distinctive aesthetic that still persists nowadays : I thought it would be fun to learn more on the style and spirit of those times!

I read The Thoughtful Dresser when it came out a while ago. She also used to have a blog with that name. I liked it a lot.
Best style book of all time is The Triumph of Individual Style. (In case you missed the last dozen times I mentioned it. )

That is so funny about the A-line. Anna’s editor should have helped her with that.

Linda Grant’s book sounds interesting.

Style Fan you will enjoy Jennifer’s book. It is such an extra fun read when you have a love of fashion and psychology.

Janet- I just finished Linda’s book and I almost mentioned it but I didn’t want to do an endless list ( which I could because I love to read in general and “ decompress” with fashion books). The start of her book is real heavy but I really liked it.

I saw book club started with Parisian Chic- Ines de La Fressange is one of my style icons- if you have any plans to see Paris- that’s the book to get. Tells you the best stores, eateries etc. I can only dream of seeing Paris.

Sterling- I find fashion, and styling books such fun and relaxing too. I am so happy others on this site do too. I am always looking for ideas.

Thanks ladies

Right now I’m reading Linda Grant’s The Thoughtful Dresser. It’s not a how-to, it’s more of a philosophical exploration of why we wear what we wear, and that far from being a frivolous matter, clothing is more important than many people would like to believe. Makes me feel better about how much time I spend on my style hobby.

Hi YLF Friends-
I told you I would get back to you with a review of Anna Harvey’s book “ Timeless Style “. Considering she is a fashion expert ( vogue) and this book was published in 2016, it was a huge disappointment. Do not waste your time or money on old ideas.
The stellar advice it offered included:
Pg 55- “a down coat with a hood is ideal for bad weather “. You don’t say?
Pg 73-“If you like wearing sandals, they don’t work with tights.” Really?
Or this one was just great......
Pg 34- “ I bought an A-line skirt the other day- a bit dowdy, I have to say.”
I found myself screaming at the book- YOU ARE A FASHION EXPERT- WHY DID YOU JUST BUY A DOWDY SKIRT???
At least in Genevieve Dariaux’s book “ A Guide to Elegance “ you know you are reading a book written in the early 60s and it is a fun and nostalgic snapshot of the advice of that time. Harvey’s book is just tired not Timeless.
I much preferred the following:
“ You Are What You Wear” by clinical psychologist Jennifer Baumgartner who offers an easy and insightful read as to why we do what we do fashion wise. Or
“Forever Chic” by Tish Jett a fashion journalist living in France, who offers a reader an opportunity to “sit with the average French woman while she spills the beans on everything from fashion to facials”. Her women are real and their words wonderful; it is not just another what French women wear book.
As always- this is just my opinion. I may be wrong ( have been before, will be in the future)
Thanks
