This is a very 'general' and maybe far-fetched idea, but do you perhaps know a designer who does something with second-hand clothing?

It's just that I know you are passionate about (and an expert at) thrift shopping and you might feel extra inspired if you could create artwork involving this aspect of the fashion industry. (I could be completely wrong too, of course, perhaps you prefer focussing on something totally different in your work;-)

We went to first fridays last night and that is another possibility. Just roam the studios 450 Harrison Avenue and you'll find jewelry, hat, clothing artists among the other art. We only hit a single floor but there was a woman who had some entirely impractical but gorgeous hats. :-)

I have a hunch that Mass Art will be the ticket. If you will be teaching there, you'll have to let us know when events are happening, as their calendar doesn't seem to be working as good as it used to. Have you ever been to the Iron Pour? That is coming up. My kids love it. (Just don't wear any nice clothes, since they will smell like smoke forever).

I was thinking mixed media too... what a fascinating project. I can't wait to hear more about it. When I think of fashion and art, I especially think of the Japanese designers like Yohji Yamamoto, Comme des Garcons, Junya Watanabe, and Issey Miyake. I just got a book from the library of an exhibit that was done of their clothes at the Arizona Costume Institute in the mid-80s. Some of the pieces and styling were dated, but others could have come straight off the page of a 2009 issue of Vogue. Those pieces were very, very sculptural. The book is called A New Wave in Fashion. One of the interesting things is that the models are all dancers and pose in dance positions, wearing dance shoes or bare feet.

You know, I thought you might be an acrylic gal, Jean! That’s great. Bye-bye oils.

So, how about mixed media? It’s not easy but I’m sure you could make it work. Think of how well you use 3-D texture in your own outfits. All you have to do is translate THAT to a 2D surface. Start in our own closet. That’s what you know.

Antje,

OF COURSE EVERYONE IS INVITED!!!
I would love to see the whole forum there!
Angie, it would be a dream to get YLFers together in Boston, I will definitely keep everyone posted about details, it is still in planning stages.
Shiny, I haven't had a chance to look at the site you posted about but will soon. You have such great ideas, keep them coming.
Mass Art is a great idea, I am teaching there this fall for the first time and will have a chance to get acquainted with their fashion program.
Angie,
I have painted in oils for years but a few years ago, when I got married and moved into our new loft, I misplaced all of my oil paints for months and could only find my acrylics. I started painting with them and have really enjoyed the freedom and expression they brought to a new body of work. I would say that is my current medium of choice. I am not missing the solvent and the mess of oils because I work at home. That could change. I also love mixed media.

What’s your favourite medium to work with, Jean? (I’m not an artist by ANY stretch of the imagination, but art was my best subject at school and I studied fashion illustration when I went back to design school – thank you for the compliment).

Greenglove, this is the fashion show we went to back in September, maybe if you reached out to the event organizer you could get some leads?

http://www.theemergingtrends.com/

Otherwise, I might try Mass Art. They have a fashion school with many young talented designers. They do exhibits (not fashion shows) all the time, and the fashions are definetly more art than fashion. (This is always one of my favorite exhibitions; should be coming up soon now that it is end-of-year). You might be able to hook up with someone who is interested in doing this for their thesis?

There's also the annual show that is put on at the Museum of Science - the theme is more about integrating technology into fashion. (Like, imagine, wearable solar panels to power your cell and ipod).

Hmm... racking brain... you might also want to look through boston.com's style section; they often highlight up-and-coming boston designers.

Shiny, of course you and Jane will be invited.
Thanks for the encouragement, I am excited about the possibilities. I love the story about the guy at open mike, sounds beautiful! Any leads to unusual or interesting designers would be great, I know that you are in the know in such matters
Angie, would love if you had any ideas. you are a clever one and can clearly see the connections. I think you mentioned that you went to art school which is no surprise.
Julijuli
Wow, what a site! It is much more outrageous thatn I had in mind but the shall costume on the winners page from 2008 peaked my interest. I love when fashion takes on a sense of sculpture. Thanks!

I don't think this would necessarily work for your collaborative effort, but I am fascinated by Fashion as Art especially since my DH and I attended this event a few years ago. It was pretty amazing - if you have time, check out the winners page...

This is so exciting, and so you. You know I admired your painting of the trench coat:

http://s386.photobucket.com/al.....008001.jpg

I can't wait to see what you come up with!

My thoughts are that fashion IS art. It would be interesting if your collaborator could make the statement that art can also be fashion? I've seen examples of this concept before, but the absolute best, hands-down, was this guy we met one night at an open mike night. He was wearing a thrifted canvas trench coat on which he had doodled with a sharpie. He kept doodling and doodling - for YEARS. The coat was absolutely magnificent. I think it was the coolest thing I've seen in a long time. I just wish I had had my camera.

Be sure to send me and Jane an invite to your opening.

I have been asked to participate in an drawing exhibition that involves a collaboration between a visual artist and someone in another field. An example would be a painter working with a poet, creating work that expresses what the poet evokes through words. This would involve both contributors to the work exhibiting or reading (in the case of the poet) at the opening. I was thinking of trying to connect with a contemporary fashion designer and doing a drawing or series of drawings related to the focus and mood of their collection. They would have their work on display throughout the length of the exhibit. This is all in very early stages, the show would be next November. My colleagues will likely be doing far more academic and intellectual work but I thought it would be fun to showcase the artistic side of fashion. Does anyone have thoughts about art and fashion in general or specifically related to this project?
