I will have to come back to this thread. This is about the amount I usually pack for a plane trip if only the clothing seen in public counts.

Cecilia-- High five for loving Fall! Isn't it the best?

Mander-- how awesome that you took a picture? That sure doesn't seem like much but I can see that you have a lot of different looks and great color and variety there, along with room to shop. What kind of bags do you travel with? Hope CO is treating you well!

Claire, I am so glad you jumped in. I really wish I was on my way to Seattle as well. I was really dissapointed not being able to make it to the meet up. But hey, each time I get closer to being able to. I would love to fly with you, you really do have it down to a science. I wanted to ask you want kind of bags you fly with-- now I know about your personal item/purse situation! How clever : ) Is you carry on a wheelie?
Your Seattle bag sounds a lot like my usual seasonal wardrobe. Last year I had 3 jeans, 3 shoes, and 7 or 8 tops in regular rotation. It is totally doable, but I think I'd have been happier with 1-2 more tops or maybe just with some better items since a couple of the things in my wardrobe drove me nuts, which doesn't work. Lucky duck being able to borrow from your sister . . . I don't have any family members or friends that are my size. Female ones at least. Hope your trip is swell!

Hi Elly! I am getting ready to leave for Seattle for a visit with my sister and BIL before meeting up with Angie, Inge and the rest of the gang on Saturday. So that pretty much is the fantasy trip of a lifetime, lol! I'm probably going to take my entire F/W Ten Item Wardrobe, plus maybe a S/S skirt or dress and sandals just in case there's a warm spell while I'm there.

I'm travelling more and more for pleasure these days, and the air-travel itself is what prompted me to start upgrading my wardrobe a few years ago. I started out just wishing I had a really good travel outfit and trench coat, but then along the way I got rid of the crummy things, so now I only have around ten core items. For this trip that looks like:
3 pairs of skinny jeans (dark, medium blue and white)
4-5 light weight pullover sweaters
2 blouses

This is more tops than I'll need for 5 days, but the weather could be unpredictable and I'll be away from my laundry room, so better safe than sorry. I will be happier having everything I own there to choose from, instead of thumping myself on the head for leaving something behind and then wishing I had it.

I'll probably bring both pairs of my sandals too (as well as both pairs of ballet flats) even though there's not much chance I'll be warm enough to need them/ If it is warm, I'll be miserable in my ballet flats (which my feet haven't been in all summer, except for trips). They take up very little space.

I wear jeans, ballet flats, a pullover, blazer and trench on the plane (have I mentioned I run cold?). I keep a cashmere scarf and an airline blanket in my tote. For comfort items at my destination, I'll pack proper pajamas as well as yoga pants, T-shirts and runners to exercise/lounge in while I'm there. The three of us will be taking some hikes and I can borrow a fleece or jacket from my sister if I need to. Add in some socks and underwear, and I should be all set with room to spare for a potential YLF approved purchase! Meanwhile, my closet and drawers at home will look like I've completely moved out.

Oh, and for my "personal item" I carry a insulated Coleman tote (it's quilted black nylon, so it looks like a purse) full of fresh food since I eat super healthy and I'm too cheap to buy healthy food in the airport. Flying space-available means I need to be extra prepared! My clutch fits in the outside pocket of the tote so I don't need to check a bag. I've got this thing down to a science. :)

I laid everything on the floor today while I was re-packing, so I thought I might as well post a photo! Here's what I've got -- I forgot that I have a lightweight black tunic type shirt as well which is nice for sun protection. I also have some beige linen trousers that aren't in the photo that I might take although I haven't decided on that yet.

Carter-- how fun, that sounds like an awesome trip and great to spend time with the daughter in her new surroundings. Your breakdown of tops to toppers to bottoms seems very similar to mine.
Sadie-- it is awesome to hear that your trip worked out so well, and a divine vacation! Packing success stories are great.
Mander-- I'm really glad you are headed home. Hopefully you will catch the leaves and get your shopping done. Hugs from one CO girl to another (plus traveling to visit close family is the best, because if you forget anything they have you covered-- and comforted!).
Mo-- I get it! I hope you do make it back this way when you are "capsulized".
Thistle-- isn't Hawaii fabulous? It was my first plane ride. I would love to go back as well. Someday when the kids are a bit older I bet you will make it back . . . renting a timeshare or small house on one of the less expensive islands might be an option, but the flights can be killer. My Hawaii capsule would have more gear, but I was on the big Island and loved hiking in the interior almost as much as I loved the beach!

And I'm totally silly and didn't include any reading material for the flight . . . maybe it is time to get myself an e-reader of sorts.

This would be fun if I weren't in the middle of having to do it, lol. Honestly right now I'm grabbing the bulkiest and warmest of my things and those that are comfortable in case I end up doing the week long drive. Trying to just pack away the obvious that I can live without for several weeks for now. I have all bras but 2 packed away for instance, and all belts but one. Silk dresses. That kind of thing.
Perhaps I'll come back to this thread if/when I have my travel capsule finalized and separated :)

I'm leaving on Wednesday to go visit my family in Colorado and Missouri for 3 weeks, and since I plan to do a lot of shopping while I'm there, I haven't packed much at all. I'm also in London for a few days before I go, so I packed a few things that I'll leave here while I'm gone.

Here's what I actually have in the bag (though it's a bit more than 10 items):

1- black leggings
2- light coloured denim shirt
3- long dark blue sweater
4- dark wash straight leg jeans
5- grey graphic tee
6- black and white space dye tee
7- black/white/beige floral print tee
8- black puffy vest
9- baby blue tee
10- black and white long sleeved tee
11- red long sleeved tee
12- two scarves (one mostly blue and yellow, the other mostly black, white, and red)
13- packable down jacket
14- various camisoles and tanks

And a pair of slip on sneakers. I meant to bring a pair of grey calf high boots but I forgot to pack them! Good thing I'm planning to shop for shoes, too!

I'm planning to wear the leggings, long sweater, a tee, a scarf, and the puffy vest on the plane. I have a big fake Le Pliage style tote for all my in-flight stuff. If I get too hot I can easily stuff the vest and sweater into the bag.

Since in many ways I am going home, there aren't that many comfort items I'd need -- just a dab of my favourite moisturiser and a shampoo bar from Lush. I can always borrow some things from my Mom if needed. I'm also taking my ipad, MP3 player, noise cancelling headphones, and inflatable neck pillow for the flight.

This is timely as I just got back from my fantasy trip- 3 days in Paris, a week on a river cruise around Bordeaux, and then 3 days in Brussels- all in carry-on, as we were on-the-go and taking trains, etc. Everything went with everything, and I was able to wash some things out in the sink, so I was pretty happy with my choices (although the weather was warmer than I had anticipated). For the first time ever (I think) I actually wore everything I brought (except the rain shell- yay!) So here's what I packed and also how often I wore each item.

Comfort items: iPad and Kindle, and my Longchamps Le Pliage (goes on every trip!)

P.S. I have 5 pairs of shoes but I bought the Repettos in Paris so they don't count ;)

I'm all set to go visit my daughter in New York next week (don't I wish!). 10 clothing items in the bag, plus a couple layering camis and shoes/accessories. I think it'll fit just fine. Plus a super comfy travel outfit.

She just moved to NY a few weeks ago for her first real job and is starting to get settled in her new apartment with a couple of roommates. I imagine I'll spend most of my days shopping for "finishing touches" for her apartment (not the sofa I'm sure she's hoping I'll buy), stocking her fridge and pantry, and filling in whatever's missing from her work wardrobe and cold weather needs while she works.

Although I promise not to embarrass her by asking for a tour of her new office, I would like to do her commute with her to make sure I'm comfortable with it. She's in the financial district, so I'll take a shopping break to meet her for lunch each day, even if it's just street dogs by the water. I'll take her and her roommates out to a couple swanky dinners and to the theater while I'm there. I'll also let them show me their favorite places (aka bars) so I can make sure I'm comfortable with that as well.

Comfort items: sugar free/dairy free dark chocolate, jammies/lounge, tablet, books

So wish this were real!

I would love to go back to Hawaii. The ten items I would bring:

1&2. 2 perfect bathing suits
3-5. 3 mix and match sarongs that coordinate with both suits
6. One bathing suit cover up that coordinates with both suits
7. One sun dress, a bit fancier but still soft and comfortable
8. One gauzy lightweight topper to go overtop everything as it gets a tad chilly in the evening with the ocean breeze
9-10. Two pairs of slip on sandals that can go from beach to beach front restaurant.

Of course, some of these things (like a perfect bathing suit) are as much a fantasy item as getting to go back to Hawaii now that we have children!

Alright--- here I go!

1. Pennsylvania. The leaves are starting to get gorgeous in Colorado in the high country, as witnessed on a trip last weekend. Fall is and always has been my favorite season, and I don't know if it would be the same without the reds, oranges, and golds-- so the trip has to be somewhere up north. I've always wanted to see the colors back east somewhere. My best friend (of 21 years) lives in Philly and I haven't seen her since '09-- she likes museums and art and knows great local hangouts since she has lived in the city since '07. Plus, there are fabulous museums, historical sites for my 3% minded SO (Gettysburg and Constitutionally related locations come to mind), his aunt and uncle live in a small town in the north woods, and his favorite hockey team plays out of Pittsburg which also has a great zoo. Sounds perfect right about now to me!

2. Despite the week trip, I think we would try it with personal items and carry-ons. I think we could do it, and since we'd likely take public transport, especially around Philly, it would be important.
For the flight I'd wear:
ponte skinnies
welted oversized pullover
black leather jacket
black booties
I'd slip a fairly flat black crossbody bag inside my "personal item".
I'd also pack:

Doc martens boots

slim BF jeans

dark straight leg jeans

army jacket

henley sweater

chiffon blouse

grey oversized cardi

red v-neck knit

chamois shirt/jacket

light scarf

Pens ballcap

Plus several tanks/layer tees to be worn like camis and you know . .underwear!
By doing a load of laundry at the Besties I figure we could get the flight in, a zoo and hockey day in Pittsburg, a day in Gettysburg, 3 days in Philly, 2 outside of Allenstown, and another flight home.

My comfort items would include:

fancy travel mug for coffee and tea, used for storage for a stash of the good stuff of both kinds

my camera (I refuse to go without it!)

the laptop --- I know, I know, but if it helps I mainly pack it to display photos of CO on for friends and family and preview trip photos

swimsuit-- I don't like to travel without one

shower shoes-- it is compulsive, but ditto

cocoa butter lotion and lip balm

sneakers--- I can't travel without a pair, need them in case my feet kill, so I can go on a short run or power walk/impromptu hike, and often use them untied as slippers

leggings--- I usually prefer sweats or fleece for loungewear, but when traveling these make great PJs

a hoodie or sweatshirt--- I never can sleep on planes to my destination, but this is a must for the trip home. For a special trip like this I'd put it on my shopping list and pick one up at the stadium or UPenn

Mo recently posted the above thread regarding her newest in a series of countless cross-country moves and the challenges of packing, frequent moves on your wardrobes, and the effect of such activities on narrowing what you love http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....-has-begun.

Now, while Mo's packing situation doesn't exactly sound like a good time to many of us, it also reminded me of Claire who recently re-emerged on the forum to talk about her 10-item wardrobe experiment, which can be read about here http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....tem-report.

So, I figured maybe a few of the rest of the fabbers would be interested in completing a small challenge.

Here are the rules:

1. You pick the trip. It can be fashion-y or not, the trip of a lifetime or just the trip you wish you could swing right now.

2. You pack your hand luggage. Try to stick to a 10-item capsule, similar to what Claire is doing. This can include your travel outfit, but it doesn't have to. Tell us why the pieces will work for your trip. Hey, if you wanna shop when you get there, say that but at the very least you need clothes for the trip and the first night, plus the next day.

3. Pick your "comfort" items. Tell us the 5-10 items that you would sneak into any box or suitcase to get you through a trip or make you feel like your at your home away from home.

I will complete the challenge and post my response in the comments as well. This can be all fantasy, completed just by description, w/Pinterest or the like, or in your actual closet.

Any takers?
