There are a lot of boots in the gray / taupe / tan family in stores right now. I'd go for something like that if you mostly wear cool colors, and a cognac or chocolate if you mostly wear warm colors.

Since you've got a tall pair already, I'd start with a pair of ankle boots, maybe two with different heel heights. Then you could consider adding another tall boot in a non-black. And if you need a proper snow boot that would be a good addition for the really bad weather days. There are some brands that make waterproof, insulated boots that don't look so "giant snow boot" if you want something more sleek.

I live in Pennsylvania but spend time in Wisconsin, so my winter shoes need to be up to some cold weather. Plus I have cold feet. For my casual work-at-home life I have mostly casual shoes: five ankle boots (black, gray, brown, cognac, and leopard), black and cognac loafers, some elegant black sneakers (Paul Green, couldn't resist 'em), pewter metallic sneakers, and an athletic shoe. All the boots have 2-2 1/2 inch heels. I could wear the gray boots everyday; they go with everything. The reason I don't is I want the boots to last and I like to shake things up. I really like my shoes! If I worked in an office or met clients often, I would invest in more loafers or some nice oxfords, but the ankle boots really are all-occasion except for the very dressiest.

Cognac is a good not-black that blends with lots of other things; I find brown harder to blend into a wardrobe that's not already based on brown or beige.

If you want shoes, maybe loafers or oxfords. They can come in with heel height and often platform soles (especially menswear style oxfords) that give you height without any walking trouble. There are also booties that can have chunky, easy-to-walk heels.

NYC weather.

I am having so much trouble deciding on a color. I don't want black. Add to that the actual style of the footwear...I am going nuts.

I like the height of heels, but I don't like them to feel like heels. My boots are a 3-inch wedge that truly doesn't feel like I am wearing heels. I can walk miles in them.

All flats (almost) everyday for me! But I live in Florida, so winters are very very mild and temperatures are more spring/fall like. I have 4 pairs of flats: nude, red, leopard and tan with a pink cap toe and I wear them all regularly. In the fall and winter, I swap my nude peep toe wedges for taupe ankle boots to keep my toes warm which works great! I'd definitely recommend some ankle boots and maybe a pair of flat boots also if you're looking to add.

For every day I have a pair of super comfortable red ballet flats, and a pair of black monk strap shoes. Both are flat and good for walking. I also have a pair of knee high black boots (flat again). And I may buy another pair of navy ballet flats.

Where I live it doesn't get very cold, maybe just below freezing with a couple of days of snow. But it does rain quite a bit.

What Museumgirl said! :)

For myself, I live in a cold climate (eastern Ontario). My lifestyle is mainly casual to smart casual (I work from home, am mother to a teen, travel a lot, walk all the time). And essentially, I don't wear "shoes" in the winter (and not for much of the fall, either). I wear booties and boots.

My bootie capsule includes two dark neutrals (black and ink); one light neutral (cream), one mid-neutral casual boot (grey); one pattern (snakeskin); one colour (cranberry); one dressy (in bronze). Yup, I know. That's a lot of booties. But in my defence, I wear them for about 8 months a year.

I also have several pair of knee high boots and one pair of mid-calf boots.

We need some more parameters. For instance: What is your climate like? Snow? Rain? Mild weather? What is your lifestyle? Business? Student? SAHM? Do you wear heels? Flats? Have foot issues? Hate platforms? etc. etc. etc....

I need a new pair of everyday shoes for fall/winter. I have brown hair and walk a lot. I have a pair of black suede wedge tall boots that I practically live in between December and February. I am looking for inspiration for my purchase.

What are your fall and winter shoe everyday capsules?
