I do the same as you. Spring and Autumn here are similar temperature-wise (chilly/warmish) therefore there are clothes that I wear in both seasons. It's t-shirts worn with cardigans, light jackets, thin wool sweaters, cotton pants, closed shoes. I have a preference for light colors therefore I try to keep the outfits light-colored, but it is not always possible of course. I recently found a pair of white/silverish slipons that will be perfect for Autumn. I'm so happy! Light-colored Autumn shoes have been a HEWI for me for a looong time.

I feel drawn to very different color palettes in spring vs. fall--but I look very good in traditional fall colors, so I like wearing them. I look more washed out in lighter colors, which I associate with spring.

In spring, I like to wear pastels (pink, mint, lavender) grounded with a darker neutral. In fall, I gravitate toward gray, black, dark brown, toffee, burgundy, and mustard. Yum!

I wish I could wear the same pieces for fall and spring, since that would save some wardrobe space (and some money!). But I personally find that many colors that feel "right" in spring don't feel right in fall, and vice versa.

My spring and autumn wardrobes are interchangeable, and small. Our transitional seasons aren't long (especially because my personal classification involves TWO summer seasons; "pleasant summer" and "hot summer") and are the only time that I'd wear things like 3/4 sleeves (ie things that can only be worn without toppers). Lighter cardigans would be another feature of this time.

My work clothes are similar all year with the exception of tops, hose, footwear and of course outerwear.

My colour palette, and transitional wardrobe is very small, and differentiating between autumn and fall would leave me with about 1 or 2 items to wear for each season!

Katerina, I tend to wear a similar palette year round. I don't wear my woolly tweed blazers in the Spring, nor my woolly scarves, very black items, or heavy earth tones.

Spring can be colder than Autumn! So I do wear wool and cashmere - but in Spring colours.

For example, these items from my wardrobe are for Autumn & Winter ONLY - not Spring. It's a psychological thing more than anything:

I think where we live makes such a difference here - not just the physical temperature and weather - but the traditions and norms.

I think in the Northern Hemisphere Christmas is associated with sparkle and red clothing for example - and a sequin top or a red dress make so much sense to liven up the darkest part of winter. And Easter is associated with spring and new growth etc..

Here Christmas is not the hottest part of the year - but it is very light - and summery - and wearing traditional colours does not often feel right. I do wear red in summer but I don't wear much sparkle (sequins, shimmer etc) - I prefer to wear these in winter when the shine is flattering.

Autumn is usually warm in the day - and cool in the night ( a relief) whereas Spring is wetter and windier - yet after a winter we are longing to put on summery florals and get rid of jeans and sweaters and puffers... even if we are too cold! In Autumn it might be really warm but we are dying to wear our new blazers and boots!!

Ah, yes, pins and other jewellery. I have several pieces that are quite seasonal. Winter, snowflake motifs, especially sparkly ones around the holidays. Flowers and butterflies for spring. I am not as excited to wear them in summer.
Summer jewelery is often shell of beachy related. Leaves, acorns and pumpkins come out for fall. I have a gold dipped aspen leaf pendant and large silver leaf pendent that get lots of autumn wear. Fall is also the time that I always wish I had a beautiful amber bead necklace.

It is so interesting, how people feel the seasons differentlly, or rather to different extent. Thank you ALL for sharing your way.

The Cat, thank you for the compliment. Thanks also for the advice. Your wearing of your golden jewelry in spring and autumn is interesting and makes sense. I love the idea of the different pins for spring and summer and for autumn and winter. I normally combine mainly colours and shapes, but seasonal themes would add another dimension.

Katerina, to me, you definitely look like a "Winter"--you look gorgeous in cool, bright and jewel colours.

Your great basics like blazers and suits, can absolutely be worn year round. (Maybe except in hot summer, as you said. However, you could easily create summer versions of your favourite basic outfit, if you like-- by adding more white, stone and light grey among your basic colours and/or by wearing shortsleeved blazers and thin, breezy trousers.)

You can use your large collection of accessories like scarves, bags, brooches and other jewelry to style your basic outfits for the actual season. I guess you already do this, perhaps more or less intuitively. Anyway, you always manage to look fab. :-)

I would like to add to my previous comment that in addition to styles, fabrics and colours, I also take ACCESSORIES into consideration when dressing for a specific season. Examples:

● Though I look best in cool colours and prefer silver jewelry, I want to keep and wear a few gold pieces, for personal reasons, and I have chosen to wear my gold pieces mainly in spring (echoing the growing light and sunshine) and fall (echoing the golden leaves). I offset them with a cool colour that creates the contrast I need for my colouring, i.e. deep pink, clear bluered, bright or deep purple, bright blue or torquoise.

● In spring (and summer), I'll wear my butterfly brooch and my flower pins, while in fall (and winter), I'll wear my felt and fur pins.

I noticed I wear the same outfit formulas made of the same clothing item types, but not the same color formulas!
I like a white outerwear for Spring (denim or (p)leather jacket) but don't feel me great in them for heading deeper in Fall. Then, I rather wear my black/grey denim jackets, my olive raincoat, or my black or tan trench.
I wear the same black ankle pants with my black patent oxfords for early Spring and Mid Fall, but the Spring version has a white sole-while the autumnal has a brown sole to itl
I love bright orange, corals and sour yellows or turquoise for Spring but rather rust/burgundy and mustard or teal for Fall.
My white layering shells/tops go all grey, black and cream for Fall.
So interesting....

I’m enjoying this post. Spring is the shortest season where I live. After a long winter I find myself wearing lighter colors and softer shades of some of my favorites I.e. instead of dark coral, I will wear a peachy shade. The layers of clothing are also lighter weight and spring is when I pull out the crops and capris. These clothing piecesoften work for the first couple of weeks of school, when the days are really warm. Other than those really warm weeks, I can sequester the majority of my spring clothing to one section of the closet to wait until the following end of April/May.
In autumn, I am ready for heavier weights in fabrics, deep, saturated colors, more layering, long pants and socks!

I can tell you what I missed about seasonal dressing and tried to artificially recreate when I lived in Florida: differences in texture, shape, and color.

Texture: colder seasons often mean heavier fabrics, which drape differently and may have a structure of their own. Think of suede, corduroy, thick knits. What can you wear in warm weather with so much textural appeal? Maybe lace, but good-quality cotton lace that isn’t itchy is hard to find.

Shape: realizing that boots and 1 or 2 pr of thick tights worn with a bodysuit could keep me as warm as a bulky sweater and heavy pants was revolutionary for me. It was so freeing to be able to have a body shape again in winter. Things I used to think of as “summer only”, like mini skirts, were available in winter too. OTOH, many cold weather silhouettes just don’t work in summer. In Florida, I was delighted to find lightweight knit sweaters to wear with cotton pants to mimic that classic winter shape during Florida’s winter. There was no way I could wear them in summer, which is 6 months long, there. In real winter, I can’t stand them, because I wear enough of that shape in things that actually keep me warm.

Color is less of a difference for me than the other factors, because I like intense colors throughout the year, but I probably go a little lighter when it’s warm out. I played with color a lot when trying to make a fall capsule in Florida, because it is the variable I found easiest to adjust, so I went with plumb, cranberry, and other berry colors, accented with brass and other darkish metals.

The way these play out in fall and spring, which have similar temps and maybe similar weather, is in anticipation. In the fall, I’m looking forward to my leather jackets and wool coat, so am happy to pull out my suede jacket and lightweight sweaters. The first few times I put on a big ‘ole sweater, it doesn’t feel oppressive or like it’s covering me in a negative way; it’s cozy and snuggly and great. By springtime, I’m done with all of that, can’t wait to bare some skin and wear simple cotton fabrics, so I wear things like short jackets that mimic summer shapes and (non) textures that are secretly warm. Ironically, I probably wear undershirts to stay warm in spring more than in fall, because even though I want the warm weather look, I still need to dress warmly.

And this fall? Who knows what I’ll do, lol!

ETA: just read everyone else’s comments: La Ped and Cat’s paragraphs on style give good examples of the kinds I things I wear. Joy and Anchie describe the emotional component much the same way I feel it.

I have two very different color palettes, one for Spring/Summer and another for Fall/Winter and that implies that my Fall is different then my Spring. My Spring/Summer wardrobe is very colorful, lots of bright colors and white and navy as neutrals. But after six months of wearing color I need more subdued, neutral wardrobe for Fall/Winter and in that season I wear mostly black and gray. But after 6 months of neutrals I am ready for color again, so this approach works for me. For this winter I want to add maybe some lighter neutrals to make my wardrobe less drak, or maybe some new neutral like brown, but I am not drawn to color at the moment, had enough color fix this summer

In fact as I do my tracking on paper, I have my wardobe listed in only two sections. One section is called autumn/winter/spring, and one section is called summer. Because our winter in the north of our country where I live does not involve snow, or even many frosts, winter dressing is pretty much the same as transitional seasons.Maybe the addition of an extra layer under pants ( like thermals or long johns or even ordinary leggings) and a coat on the ouside of a jacket is the only difference. The "summer" stuff is sleeveless tops, summer dresses, cropped pants etc. I do put the hotter or colder stuff in storage once we reach the non-transitional times, and then when we transition into the colder part of winter or the hotter part of summer I have enjoyed pulling those things out again that were packed away. Eg my faux fur vest will come out in perhaps early autumn after having been away since partway through spring. Something like it feels quite "autumnal" so may not get worn as much in spring I suspect. But I haven't tracked in that way. I am tracking to find out numbers of wears.
When we are in the new house soon, it is all supposed to be out at once, since the walk-in-wardrobe is large. I intend to post photos and ask the forum's help on arranging when that time comes, I think.

La Ped and The Cat mention footwear. One difference I notice in my own dressing, even if the temperatures are similar and the weather, I tend to wear Chelsea boots from rather early autumn and try to wear lighter shoes in early spring - like looking forward to the next season. I will try to reflect on colours too, if I notice such tendencies, too.

Thank you all for sharing your strategies and habits, so interesting. Apart from that we all live in different climates, there are obviously differences in how we FEEL the different seasons.
Where I live, the temperatures and the weather can be very similar in early spring and late autumn (not always, but can be). Same goes for late spring, early autumn etc. I was just looking at my late spring WIWs and I could easily wear some of them in September. I wonder if my wardrobe is rather seasonless, apart from hot summer. Or if I am a bit ignorant to seasons and dress more for temperatures and weather.. And I don’t mean it as a negative thing necessarily.
I have quite i signature style. Wear mostly solid pieces, lot of trousers and blazers and patterns almost only in scarves, and a lot of scarves. Sunglasses all year around. Love rather strong colours, lot of jewel tones for example. I don’t actually know where it belongs seasonally.

Katerina, I envy you your ability to wear the same items in both spring and fall. In spring I crave florals, polkadots and light neutrals and light and bright colors. In fall I want dark neutrals and even a darker light neutral like toffee. I also like tweed, plaid and leaf motif prints. I plan to look for autumn florals and plaids in olive, dark reds, navy and mustard. I like different fabrics... Leather, flannel, suede, quilted, faux fur, chunky knits as opposed to spring patent, smooth leather, polished cotton, and open knits, sheer fabrics and lace. I have tried to combine spring with fall but very little appeals for both seasons. Maybe navy, blush and off whites.

For me it's about color palette and patterns. There is quite a bit of overlap but:

Spring - coral, Breton stripes
Fall - burgundy, Fair Isle

I generally tend to favor lighter, brighter colors in the spring: pale blues, pale pinks, and this year some pale purples & minty greens. In fall I gravitate towards darker, earthier, dirtier colors: browns, greys, navy blues, burgundy, blacks. I think it's a reflection of what I see in the world around me: spring is when things bloom, fall is when things become a riot of earthy colors.

Historically, I tended to make sure that it mostly all mixes and matches. This year, I've got some things that are brighter and some that are dustier/drearier, so I'm having to be sure to not mix brights with dusty.

Interesting topic.

I have several items that I wear in spring AND fall only. (They are too warm for summer and too cold for winter.) Where I live, spring and fall are short, compared to summer and winter, so I have actually promised myself not to purchase any item that can be worn in EITHER spring or fall ONLY, unless it can also be worn as partywear in at least one other season.

I see absolutely nothing wrong with wearing some items in two, three or all four seasons. But I would probably style them differently throughout the year.

I like my wardrobe as well as my outfit to harmonate with the actual season when it comes to STYLES, FABRICS and COLOURS.

About styles: In spring, I tend to wear more skirts, shortsleeved tops and ballet flats, while in fall, I tend to wear more trousers, longsleeved tops and loafers.

About fabrics: To me, thin fabrics like cotton, silk and rayon/viscose generally signal "spring", while more textured fabrics like wool, suede, leather and corduroy generally signal "fall."

About colours: I like to add i.e. a "spring touch" or a "fall touch" to an otherwise basic outfit by including items like tops, footwear, jewelry or scarves in one or two colours that I associate with the actual season and know I can wear. My typical spring colours are light lemon yellow, rose beige, pink (all shades), light/clear purple, blue, light/clear green and light/medium grey. My typical fall colours are cool brown, deep pink, bluereds, purple (all shades), teal, bottle green, medium grey, and charcoal.

The door to the walk in closet I share with DH opens against my side - so one end is just a little less accessible than the other. I arrange my closet by colour so in S/S black is behind the door, then white, then blue. In F/W I switch things up and blue goes behind the door, followed by white, then black. So, though I wear my basic colours year 'round, I use blue and white much more in S/S and black more in F/W.

Current accent colours are blush, olive, and red. I have S/S weight items (t-shirts tanks) in blush and olive, and sweaters for F/W in these colours as well. Red is currently represented by footwear and outerwear - so year round.

I understand exactly the point you make. My spring and fall wardrobe are virtually the same. I have a mostly year round wardrobe and a tight palette so my lighter colors are seen in late Spring and early fall
( May/Sept) while darker colors are dominant in early Spring and late Fall (April/ Nov). So aqua vs teal and blue vs navy and lavender vs eggplant
Like you I depend on various weight blazers, scarves and footwear to accommodate the weather in those 2 seasons.
Great post and timely as we are going to be entertaining weather changes soon here in the northeast US.
