I have almost all the basics I want; so I'm sort of going to be one-in-one-out except swapping for better quality :)

Just bit the bullet on a fabulous vintage red pencil skirt! Can't wait for it to come!

Ah! Sorry to hear of such horrible experiences! I also had F21 tees pill up mightily after only a couple of wears... I still bite on rare occasion when I spot something I just haven't been able to find elsewhere (like my cat dress), but overall I simply welcome you back to Club Vintage. It's a green way to shop, and I've found that I get much higher quality for much lower prices buying pre-owned stuff.

I'm with you, Lyn! (Though I haven't had anything fall apart on the hanger, yikes!) I bought a lot of fast fashion over the last 2 years while experimenting with my style to find what it is, and now that I know (or at least know where I want to go) I'm working on buying higher quality items so my wardrobe will actually, you know, last through the season (more vintage desired here too). I still pick up pieces from various fast fashion stores, but certainly have been much more discerning about quality.

Quality control is way out there. I had an experience with a couple of high dollar jackets from Nordstroms that had the worst craftmanship. There were uneven seams and threads hanging all over the place. And how about this phenomenon of buttons falling off all the time on new clothing?
I'm just about to start making my own clothing so I can have the fit and quality that I deserve.

Boo on poorly made clothing!

Lyn, I avoid F21 like the plague - the quality of everything appears to be quite inferior.

I had two woven leather Michael by Michael Kors belts that fell apart within weeks.
I promptly returned them. Where is the quality control, Mr. Kors?

I hear ya. I was just thinking this morning about the amount of money I've spent at nordstrom.com lately and how of all the items I've ordered I've only kept TWO of them because everything else was questionable in craftsmanship and quality, including a bebe jacket and a Kenneth Cole jacket.

Lyn, you seem to get a LOT of pleasure from your budget shopping sprees, so I wouldn't entirely rule out the fast fashion track, but maybe you could think about what items you really need to be durable and make sure you go vintage or higher quality new for those (assuming you can afford that for a few items)?

If it's falling apart on the hanger never having been worn there is really something wrong; that's just crazy. I wonder if they would give you a store credit? And if you don't want to buy clothes there any more maybe you could get some accessories.

yes, and I find that it's not just discount clothing. Sometimes it's hard to tell what will and won't hold up. I wore a new ATL jersey dress once and there was noticeable pilling on the back. I've also had a lot of instances of discoloration and fading after a wash or two. It's kind of crazy that your unworn and unwashed clothing is already having problems, though! Were those F21 items? I actually haven't found their clothing to be particularly unreliable. It doesn't last forever, but I usually get at least 6 mos - 1 year out of F21 clothes.

When I was a young girl I used to cringe and roll my eyes when my mother said things aren't made like they used to be.

I have been saying the same thing for years...lol.

When I was twenty or so she gave me two blouses she wore as a teenager. I nearly died at how absolutely wonderful they were made and the quality of the fabric.

Vintage continues to rock for a reason.

Sorry for your wardrobe woes Lyn.

I have a couple discount or Jr. tops that aren't quality pieces but I intend to enjoy them as long as they (or their seams!) last. But I have to say, even regular brand names don't always hold up. I have a blue Michael by Michael Kors top from TJ Maxx this year who's seams twisted incredibly on the first wash and it has faded markedly in 3 washes/wears

... I was looking through my closet, and can't believe the poor state of some clothes that are made (and that I bought); one article of clothing has an unfixable rip from the weight of itself from sitting on a hanger (unworn, unwashed). One other article has decided to oxidize or something; and it was formerly white and is now yellow (unworn, unwashed). One other article has decided to fall apart after one wash by hand.

I think I am starting to see why F21 isn't the best for the environment; or my wardrobe. *sigh* It was too good to last. Has anyone else wasted money like this?

Back to vintage for me.
