Agree that #1 looks totally kosher. #2 lacks cohesiveness and does not have flowing lines that 'gel'. maybe skirt #2 is a summer only skirt?

Well, Joy, I don't look 30! But I really like your comment--both the top and the skirt skew casual and a bit trendy/young--haha, they are both from retailers that aim for a younger crowd. So I might like my V-neck cashmere sweater as a "classic" piece to dial the skirt back. These are types of critiques I find really helpful to analyze what's going on in an outfit. I'm not commited to the cream top iwht the skirt--I'm playing with the best ways to "mature" and fall-ify the skirt. Also your remarks fit in with how I had been trying to wear the French Connection top in the first place--such as shown with a silk skirt and pumps, or with pencil skirts--playing on the juxtaposition.

Although I am not a huge fan of high contrast btw thighs and skirts, I guess #2 works. Specially knowing that the thighs are brown... I believe the contrast is exaggerate in these pics. To my eye, the shirt allows/pics the dark coloured pantyhose and it looks pretty Fall!

#1 isn't perky, but I would use in casual settings, not work.

I'm going against the wisdom here. I'd like to see your head in #1, but as an over 55 I would hesitate to wear the outfit although I like it. The full short skirt plus sweatshirt type top seem very young to me. if you look 30, then it has my blessing ;).
I'd like 2 best with something like nude fishnets or sheerer black stockings, but can see it as styled with a black jacket or scarf. That probably doesn't make sense but in my eye, it's for balance.

I like Texstyle's suggestions. Black can be jarring when you're used to seeing bare leg with #2 -- try a lighter textured tight and coordinating footwear.

I think #1 is a go. It's fun and right on trend and of course flattering. It works well with the black tights too.

Another thumbs up for #1 --- I think I'd like #2 better in real life --- contrast can seem exaggerated in photos.

I really like #1 the skirt looks lovely on you. Wearing light skirts or dresses with dark tights is on trend so our eyes may adjust to the look :)

Suz, I think you're right. It's not working for me either.
Diana, these are dark brown tights. But still too much contrast.
I may try some other colors--"pantyhose", or still looking for the elusive taupey-grey tight that fits well.
This is a good exercise for me because I am SO a tights person if I wear skirts or dresses(one reason is because it makes my footwear more comfortable, and the other is being cold) and so I'm keeping an eye out for tights -footwear combos I might not have thought of but that look more modern and also "mature" enough.
Looking for the elusive tapered-shaft bootie that fits close to the ankle, too.
Did you see the suede babies that Angie posted? They look like they would just purr up over your ankles.

I like #1 a lot. In #2, I think it's not the light color but the tone of the skirt that does not work. It looks too warm with the black tights. You might want to try some dark brown tights instead, or some slightly sheer black tights (which also looks warmer toned). On the other hand, I think a similar lightness grey skirt would work fine with black opaques.

I have an irrational poison eye for light skirt/ dark tights looks. I admit it is irrational, but I can't get rid of it. I think it is because it just "feels" seasonally confused to me, even if it is not. If you know what I am saying.

I think look #1 would be brilliant with a slightly lighter or less opaque tight, and I would definitely wear that if I looked as good in it as you do!

Thanks for input! The photos really helped me because I can see I'm not really going to be a light skirt/dark tights person. Texstyle, I have some kinda greige tights that look better but still dark but they're ankle-saggy so may be a bust. I think I will enjoy moderate amts of contrast--grey and black or vice versa--but not this much. I do like this skirt with fall colors--rust sweater, fall print knits-- so may focus on "hot early fall" but no dark tights.

Love #1!!! Not very fond of #2. I think the fullness of #1 works with the dark tights where the tights are too dark in #2.

I don't think #1 is too perky - I think it works. Both of them work but I understand the hesitation on the contrast as I'd probably have that too. You could also try textured dark taupe tights and shoes with both of these I'd think. And boots...

I have this near-ophan Anthro skirt thatis shorter than I like (hmm, a theme here?) and I knew that when I bought it but since it’s for casual I thought it’d work. But then I find I don’t reach for it ‘cause of where it hits the knee or above. It’s not a sit-test problem, because it’s full, but my knees feel a bit twee in it.

Anyhoo, thinking of fall transitions, I tried it here --#1--with tights and oxfords, since the tights help out with the length.

What do you think? If you’re in the > 55 crowd, would you wear this, or is it too “perky” ? I’m pretty good with it for church or something, but doubt I’d wear this skirt to work, short or not, but it’s interesting to me how adding the tights and shoes change the look. I also have a brown cashmere sweater that would go, and give a different vibe, but this is an unlined rayon skirt, so it’s not gonna be for any really cold weather,-- just for when tights start to look seasonally appropriate. I would not invest in new items to create something, but since I have all of these parts, I was just thinking og getting some more use out of it, and the colors are good for the transition season look.

#2 is also thinking of extended wear of my beige summer skirt—I’ve never done the light skirt-dark tights combo, but the YLF’er post on how to wear tights made me try it. This would be for work and is very comfortable to wear. Is it a good look, or is it trying too hard ? I don’t have to use the skirt this fall, but I’ve been trying to be on team wear and not protect it until next spring. A slightly lower-contrast tight might work better and I could think about that, though don’t have it. Not with a patterned top, but a fishnet or patterned hose that lightened up by showing skin through.
