Good question, yes. I think my answer is mainly this: because of the return of brown, I can shop my closet for some items that have been out of rotation and mix them with what's still current. I am also allowing some gold hardware, which I'm usually not into at all.

I didn't really start my sorely needed closet update until *after* last fall, so the things I've added since then still feel fairly fresh to me. And something I am really pleased about--I'm also going to be able to rescue some orphans that I knew were "me" when I got them but could not make work with the pathetically inadequate closet I had. :)

Yes, I was glad to see when Angie gave her assessments of some continuing items that I have already.
Since I foraged into ankle pants a bit, I'm figuring out how to wear some into milder fall weather, but the seriously seasonally confused look would be hard for me.

Thanks for that link Tanya, I'd missed that. Bomber jackets is one thing I'd been wondering about because I don't have one but would still like one.

To me, it looks that the upcoming fall season is going to be very similar to the past one. The only new things I am seeing are colors, brown and more radiant orchid. Angie had a post about continuing trends a while ago:
http://youlookfab.com/2014/02/.....fall-2014/

Unfumped, if you learn the secret to the perfect work trouser, please share it with me! After 2 years of trying to make a pair of navy trousers 'work', I donated them. 2 weeks ago I bought a new pair, and I've been wondering if I did the right thing. They are cut lower (shorter rise), are a longer length, and better size/fit. However, they are a mid-width straight leg...not loose and flowy, nor skinny.

And, I'm with you on the shoes as well. It is my second week of the new commute to work, and though the walk from the train station to work is short, anything but a flat will not do! My pointy toe flats are getting a work out and showing the wear, and I have caught myself looking lovingly at the ballet flats in the shoe store windows. I'm resisting going the commuter sneaks route and leaving a stash of high heels at work.

The cotton turtleneck sweaters will go into rotation when the weather gets cooler, and I am looking forward to getting more wear from my 2 leather jackets. Didn't get to wear the purple one as much as I wanted to (got it in November) but the cognac one was a workhorse! I have a lot of cognac accessories, and my closet skews to the navy, grey, brown like a recent Angie capsule, so I think I'm on the right track!

My one must have for fall/winter is a colourful winter coat. I am holding out for mustard yellow, and will pounce if I see the right one...full price, even! Also, I'm on board for winter white, and plan to start with a skirt like the one below.

The only newer style I'm adding in so far a asymmetric sweater with a split hem. So far, I've only seen them with 3/4 sleeves and I want full sleeves.

Intersting responses.
caro, you've made a believer of me re: footwear.
That's in part why I'm thinking of not doing much drastic with some pants and tops silhouettes--narrow pants with fluid-oversized sweater; straight pant with soft or fluid top, tucked if possible, some untucked; pencil skirts with tights and boxy or fluid tops; still gonna see if my pleated Theysken's work this year--but if I find the HEWI low-heeled bootie that is comfortable but still refined with skirts, or the non-flower pot boot shaft, or, hey, maybe a different oxford, or maybe a wildcard shoe as yet to be determined, then I would pounce.

Kiwigal, I agree. This summer I hadn't found a good substitute for some ballet flats with certain skirts, where the loafer just didn't work, or the color was just better, so I just kept on trucking with them and updated some knitwear tops. I try to think that okay, my whole footwear menagerie is not just the ballet flat, so I'm eclectic and like variety, not dated.

I am , so far, not seeing many new trends, and am wondering too, what if anything will be really out, and what is really new. Other than seeing some brown, things are looking a lot like last year. I am needing to replace a couple of pairs of jeans . I did some major purchasing last year for the holiday season, and that will carry me thru this year. Maybe wanting something more edgy in footwear, not sure about my white fake fur jacket, but am looking forward to wearing it again. this holiday season, It was awesome last year.. As for jeans, I do not think the flares that seemed like maybe they would be big trend come fall is not happening. Going to stick with relaxed skinnies, and non baggy BF's as that is what I like. My 1 pencil skirt is enough, my LBD is kind of classic -elbow sleeves, just at knee, so will get styled different ways for the whole winter/ fall season. So purchases will be jeans, fluid sweaters or other tops, maybe edgy footwear, and replacing some sneakers. I did get some new booties, will post photos-soon-they were super markdowns, and probably last years styles, but look much like what I am seeing for this year, and they are cute and comfy.

I've been narrowing my colours & silhouettes for a couple of seasons. I'm trying to build a focussed core of clothes in a couple of neutrals. It is proving difficult as I don't want one of the neutrals to be black Every year I say no more black, but this year I meant it. Some of my favourite clothes are black so it will be a slow process to replace them all but this (our) winter I've replaced some black pieces with ink or navy or grey. I've also edited my dressier clothes right down to the absolute minimum because most of them were/are black.

For our coming summer I don't need much - more linen pants & a couple of dressier summer tops & a summer weight pants suit (a HEWI of mine). I've been wearing looser bottoms for a while so I'm okay there. I update my footwear every season - it makes the world of difference imo. I bought my caged sandals & flat metallic sandals from Nordies at the beginning of your summer.

All that is a long-winded way of saying I don't see any major shifts for me but being an eclectic I never say never :)

I think this answer varies greatly depending on what part of the world you are in but from what I can see, the items falling in the MORE category include sweater dresses, cardigans with oversized collars, fun patterned tights and knee boots in every shape size and colour.

I think trends have a longer life now....ie skinny jeans, ballet flats - they are not high fashion now but they are also not terribly dated if worn with a loose volume top.
I tweak from year to year but there is no need for a major style shift.
I am still loving dresses but as with Deb finding skirts a bit harder...I think it is mostly because my tops are better with trousers or jeans. I have one pencil skirt that I love for work, and one maxi skirt that I enjoy, the others languish sadly on the rail!!

What I'm happy about that I've seen so far is the "radiant orchid" color coming in Fall and Winter clothes. It is my favorite color and I was wondering when it would finally get here. Also seeing other colors I like. So for me it may be a shopping heavy season coming up!

I can only speak for my personal style but I am not purchasing any more skirts. I have not been wearing them so the few I have will do. I have been off dresses for several years now and still do not have the urge to purchase nor wear one. My dressier pant collection seems to be increasing. But, I really need to remember that my life has changed to the more casual side. I am working from home more than ever so I want to upgrade the pieces I have. I do need to find a direction for my shoe wardrobe. This is where most of my thoughts will be going.

I'm still in mid-summer and not really addressing my fall and winter clothing yet in a true review and edit fashion. I'll likely feel more like doing that in September.

Last year I got a number of things I enjoyed and am hoping many will still work this coming fall. I don't have to have all cutting-edge trends!
It seems to me that fluid fits and some oversized tops are still going strong. I am still seeing flat oxfords (as Angie noted) though there may be updates in styles. Boot and bootie styles seem fairly similar but with variety--okay for oval toes, comfortable toe boxes seem allowable, some pointy, various heel heights--pretty forgiving, there. Still a lot of slim pant styles and I can't tell where the trouser leg or even wide styles are, Mainstreet -wise, so may stick with what I think looks more classic for me.
I'm also wondering if fashion is really so eclectic now, as Angie has been saying, that it's easier to keep on with some things that are "working" and fit in quite well.
One reason for pondering all this is to see when it works better to hold the course and not go in a new direction unnecessarily--hmmm, that doesn't sound right, but is meant to be, at some point there might be a more drastic shift, or I might, heaven forfend, change lifestyle or work or locale, so there may be times I'll want to make more wardrobe changes, and might conserve resources for when that muse strikes.

All this is to say, what do you see as style shifts for the coming season--what do you think will be going stronger, what will be really different, what seems to be about the same as last year? What did you wear last fall that you think will be totally wrong this year? And so on.
