Thanks Louise! Does anyone else have perfume sites that they use? I will try to add mine later today. I have my links on my desk top and I'm using my iPad right now.

This past year I've fallen hard for perfume. Previously I struggled to find perfumes that smelt nice on me, whether my body chemistry has changed, perhaps stress does strange things to it but post breakup I've found loads which I love. We're just coming into autumn (officially not till towards the end of September but as it's back to school time I start with it a bit earlier), I'm currently cycling between Beyonce Heat and J Lo Glowing. I hated both of these when I first bought them in summer but now the weather has cooled they've come into their own. I love this site http://www.fragrantica.com/search/ for perfume recommendations x

I think that the Formula X is supposed to emphasize whatever type you are . A Basenoter did go get a consultation at Dawn's studio in Colorado. She turned out to be a combo of two of the types. But I haven't yet tried the experiment for myself. I'm tempted to ,a sample vial is only a few dollars and I've tried other things from this nose and her work is really excellent. If I do try then maybe I'd be able to tell why some scents blossom out gorgeously on my Mom and sort of do a fast forward through the top and mid notes on me .

Gigi, I believe the children respond well to scents. I haven't seen any studies but I think I will do a search on this tomorrow because it is so interesting. Some teaching assistants use scented sprays in the younger kids classrooms. I don't mean the disinfectant/deodorizing type, but actual scents like lavender or cinnamon, etc. It's interesting that they only seem to be using the scented sprays with the youngest children. The essential oils are for all ages. The kids we work with have many sensory issues and I think scent can be calming or agitating. I have never heard that they get agitated from the scents so there must be some calming effect.

Perhaps it's like the effect of baking bread or cookies. When that aroma lingers in a house, guests supposedly feel more comfortable and happy. Real estate agents use that to make people feel the houses they are looking at are nice and "homey".

Staysfit, interesting about your social workers and the essential oils! I wonder if kids' systems are more sensitive to the relaxing effects of some of the oils.

Some of the essential oil blends are really nice smelling and can easily double as perfume, I think! I had one that I wore a few months ago that had jasmine in it...it smelled really wonderful. Neroli is another good one, although it's quite expensive.

Gigi, several of the social workers where I work use essential oils and scents to help the children relax. I think they let the children pick their own scent, although they also have done things like mix some oils for me when I have a headache to see if it provides relief. (Not really, but the headache didn't get worse, and the concoction they made smelled good).

I love perfume and try to remember to wear it on my days off. My two main ones in rotation now are Tom Ford Oud Wood and Bond No. 5 New Haarlem. The latter is the one I think of as my summer fragrance, and the other one is for all the other seasons. If I could only wear one ever, it would be Oud Wood; it just feels so much like me. It took me a long time to buy it, but I kept thinking about it for more than a year!

I haven't worn perfume in a long time...I developed a high sensitivity to fragrances (they usually give me headaches). I now use some essential oils and just vary them whenever I feel like it. But changing your perfume with the season sounds like a great idea!

Jennifer, I like the skin type information, but it is confusing me a bit. Is this the way skin smells without any perfume, or how the perfume tends to smell after it is applied? I have a large collection of perfumes also, but only listed my absolute favorites. I don't have as many as you though. I think I have something like 50-75 bottles, and another 40 in sample vials. Are all of yours full bottles?

It seems that a lot of you like Jo Malone. For a long time Nectarines and Honey was my favorite, and I also liked the Grapefruit. I mixed the Nectarines and Honey with another one, but I can't recall which, and no one mentioned it here yet. I also really like Hermes Kelly Caleche, which I wear year round when the feeling strikes. Finally, I have a few perfumes that remind me of specific things, like fresh cut grass, spring flower gardens, pine forests, etc. I still keep bottles of my first favorites Dolce and Gabana Light Blue. I keep hunting for one that smells like the cherry wood pipe tobacco from my uncles pipe. It was a very sweet and somewhat spicy smell.

I don't wear a lot of perfume. One spritz only into the air and then I walk through it. I hope it isn't too heavy or noticeable to anyone. I don't wear it if I have a doctors appointment. I am bothered if others wear too much perfume, and I really don't like if someone is wearing so much perfume that it lingers on me after they give me a hug. (That has happened to me twice recently).

Marley, finding a perfume is a trial and error process. To find mine I had to go through hundreds of samples. I get sample vials, not just a spritz at the mall. That way you can try the scent more than once. Many of the samples I have tried were awful A few were so bad they kept me up at night because I couldn't get rid of the smell and I felt sick! It's truly a trial and error process. Eventually I learned what type of scents seem to work for me and I can tell with an initial sniff if it is worth trying. There are some great websites dedicated to perfumes. My favorite is called "Now Smell This".

Ooh, fun thread! I have two fragrances. One is for warm weather and it's L'Eau d'Issey; the other is for cool weather and it's Chanel Allure. I've been wearing the first one since 1996 and the second since 1999. Good grief, that's like, forever. I just realized that.

I have tried other perfumes over the years but never lasted more than a few weeks before returning to my favorites. I'm such a creature of habit.

Staysfit, those sound delicious! I tend not to keep up with any because of my work, even though I could wear at other times. But I have always loved the idea of a signature scent and also I try things from time to time to find that perfect, light, unique something . When I was younger my favorite, based on happenstance rather than a dedicated search, was Caleche by Hermes.

I think I'm the resident perfume nut around here . I collect ( and wear) a whole lot of perfumes . Somewhere over the 4-500 mark . I need to inventory and pare down a bit . Teen Vogue did an article some time back interviewing a niche indie perfumer Dawn Spencer Hurwitz about skin types . Apparently different people will smell differently with the same scent and how it reads on them. Part of this is medication , smoking, diet, hormones and I'm not sure what else.
Dawn Spencer Hurwitz fragrance skin type classifications as listed in Teen Vogue(copied and pasted as hunting it up is a chore)

Powdery-Sweet: With this skin type, be careful of perfumes that are too sweet or floral as they may get too powdery or cloying as they wear. Fresh citrus and green scents may be the best families of fragrance for this skin type.

Creamy-Sweet: Be careful of gourmand and fruity fragrances with this skin type as they may be too sweet, syrupy and heavy. Light florals, citruses, green and ozone-marine scents are recommended for this skin type; spicy oriental fragrances can also be worn.

Floral-Sweet: This skin type should be careful of too heady, tropical-floral scents such as gardenia and tuberose. Light, fresh florals, light fruit scents, citruses and warm, oriental scents tend to work best.

Woody: Woody, conifer (piney) or very fresh scents tend to turn either dull or spiky (too sharp) on this skin type. Warm incense, oriental, spicy and citrus scents work best; gourmand scents can also be worn to good effect.

Green: With this skin type, be careful of fresh, grassy-sport scents, as well as aquatic-ozone scents, as they tend to be sharp and cloying. Soft florals, warm-woody scents and rich oriental fragrances are recommended.

Acrid: This is a more unusual skin type, unless you are a smoker. This imparts a slightly burnt aroma to the skin. Simple citrus (lemon or bergamot), deep incense, spicy or woody scents are recommended. Be careful of floral and fruity scents as they tend to "turn."

Salty-Musky: Light, fresh citrus, green-sporty scents, conifer, woody and spicy oriental fragrances are recommended for this skin type. Be careful when attempting an aquatic-ozone scent or fruity florals as they tend to overpower and become cloying.

Bitter-Sharp: With this skin type, light, fruity florals, soft musks and even sweet gourmand scents may be best. Fresh scents, spring-green florals and woody-conifer scents tend to become too sharp or intense.

Neutral: If there is no noticeable change in the scent then you have a "neutral" skin type which means you can wear most fragrance families with relative ease. You have the greatest number of choices when finding a perfume to suit you. She has a perfume "X" that is used to test which type someone is.
Hope this helps!

I've ended up a Jo Malone fan, switching up scents during the year: Wild Bluebell and English Pear & Freesia for spring, Grapefruit and Nectarine Blossom&Honey for summer, Blackberry and Bay for fall, and Pomegranate Noir and Vanilla&Anise for winter. I also like to combine some of these for variety or for transitional times.

And, Marley, if you want to find YOUR scent, I'd go into a large department store and, instead of being spritzed with everything, ask for samples of anything that interests you. I've never been charged for the little sample vials and most contain enough for two or three applications. They are also handy for travel. That's how I got hooked on Jo Malone; the SA gave me a dozen or so samples to take home to try out. Some I loved, others were meh after an hour or so, while a few made me sprint to the sink to wash off after a few minutes.

Interesting topic! I'm not the most loyal wearer (i like to try new ones and artisanal /indie type scents) , but have one or two I go back to time and time again:

winter: Coco , Jo Malone Vanilla and Anise, Chanel No 5
summer: Cristalle, Laura Mercier Verbena, Bobbi Brown Beach

I'm so paranoid now to wear fragrance - the number of signs posted everywhere pleading for a fragrance-free workplace, doctor's office etc - I'm always worried..

I've never had a signature scent but have always thought that I'd like to! Currently, I don't wear fragrance at all ( and haven't worn any in the last 10 years) because I work with animals and they need to be able to use their noses to detect who I am - fragrance would really confuse them.

I really have no clue how I would go about picking out a scent. Sometimes perfume can go so wrong! Is there a secret to figuring out what works best on a person?

I swear I was JUST thinking about posting this yesterday. I wondered if anyone else changed their scent with the season.

I wear L'occitane Verbena in the spring/summer. I work with mostly guys and they compliment me often on it. It's a citrus and always seems so fresh to me.

For fall I switch to Jo Malone Nectarine Blossom and Honey, which they describe as a spring scent but to me it's heavier but luscious.

Thanks for starting this thread. I'm interested in others' comments.

Over the years I have loved and worn many scents. During the last decade my signature scent has been Amber by Prada. I love it! My husband loves buying me others for birthdays and Christmas, so I currently have Poison by CD, Miracle by Lancôme, Chanel No. 5 and Modern Muse by Estée Lauder on the go, but Amber is the one I ALWAYS repeat when the bottle runs dry. I tend to choose my scent each day by how I 'feel' rather than the season.

My current scent is Lacoste Touch of Pink, which I wear year round. I do rotate in Clinique Happy on occasion, though. And I rather like Donna Karan's Cashmere for fall...

I think I will be purchasing a new frangrance for fall- Armani Si.

A signature scent for me is Hynotic Poison. I never liked the regular Poison but my husband and I both like this version. I do limit it to fall and winter as it seems too heavy for summer.

For spring and summer wear, I have one from the Body Shop (unfortunately no longer carried so I stocked up!) plus one of the Smell Good Daily tonics from West Third Brand (bought at Anthro).

Do you keep your signature scent all year round? Do you change it every season? Do you have multiple scents?

I have one that I wear most of the time, and then one that reminds me of each season that I switch to periodically when I feel like it. It makes me happy and offers a change to the routine. I also have scents that remind me of past events and people. (That would be for another post)

Signature: Bottega Veneta
Fall: Chanel Sycomore
Winter: Prada L'eau Ambree
Spring: Prada Infusion D'Iris
Summer: Bottega Veneta Eau Legere
