Sorry to say so, but honestly I think this cardigan looks boring on you. It lacks structure, and the length is either too long or too short.

The dress in #9 is stunning on you. The most gorgeous item I have seen you wearing.

Thank you bonnie, thank you katarina. The suggestion to buy boots when I actually have the skirts I want to wear them with, is a good one.
Angie, thanks for the tip, I can do a cuff. Funnily, I near LOATHED nineties fashion in the nineties... the platfrom soles, oversized suits, baggy pants and sweaters (streetstyle), grunge, none of it spoke to me as I was a bit of a shy and definitely sensible kid. Practical and/or pretty were my unconscious stylewords back then I think ;).
Now though, I admit to being a bit obsessed with nineties fashion. Forties are my favorite era but more for inspiration than actual clothes.
Thanks shevia. I didn't mention them in the post but the booties in the majority of the outfit lab are different, cognac & heeled booties.
I have decided btwto return the boots and wait until I both have an outspoken need for them and find some I love on all accounts.
The sweater remains undecided. I noticed I can only return for store credit so perhaps I'll cuff and run with it...

I lost my reply but it was basically “ don’t keep what seems practical but not something you love. You will keep looking for the perfect one, but if you find it, you will not buy it because you have something but mourn it, or buy it and ignore the one you have, think carefully about that cardigan and the boots. It sounds like you are trying to talk yourself into them.

Well I love the boots. That is one of my favorite styles of boots. Are you wearing the same boots in all the pictures? I ask because the color looks different on my screen (or it is a bit early and I need more coffee). I like the idea of the cardigan but a somewhat smaller or more cropped one might be even better in these looks. I know it is not a k/r but I really like the dress too.

A trendy round of outfits! Nice '90s touch. Is that your favourite fashion era, Liesbeth?

If you cuff the sleeve of the cardigan once - I think you're in business. To my eye, you wear the slouch well, and it's on trend. Very COS. But does it layer under your coats?

#8 and #9 are my faves, so if you keep the boots - you better wear those combinations! I like #1 and #2 next.

I like the idea of a cardigan like that for your style, but this particular one does not look perfect - there is something off, the size maybe or too unstructured. I would wait for the perfect one. You have a great sense of style and what works for you and you are not convinced. Listen to your instinct. The boots are nice and I like the idea of a midi skirt with them. But at the moment - you have not bought the skirts yet. Maybe wait when you have the skirts and the right ankle pants and then buy boots that go with the clothes. So I would return both.

Hah, still mixed reactions.
Nemosmom: I actually owned a pair similar to the ones you linked to, that I want to replace :).
Thanks Rachylou!
Sarah, thanks for your thought-provoking questions! I do see this cardigan as a Madewell/instagram style, thanks for putting it like that. That explains why I'm drawn to it but have a hard time actually wearing it. Maybe that's the surest sign it needs to go back and I need to figure out which (available) style of topper DOES work with my body and forties tomboy style preference... And a cognac laceup boot might actually be a good idea, as long as it's not too similar to the booties I already have. (But the heel and low shaft are actually what keeps me from wearing them in certain outfits. )
Thanks kellygirl, yes, sleek is actually one of my keywords.

Agreeing with the cardigan being a bit too slouchy. I think you can pull it off but it's not as sleek as I would like. Love the combat boots with the dress. That's my favorite of the lot!

I think the cardigan comes off as a bit too unstructured and overwhelming in the outfits you've posted here. To me the 40s tomboy style (am I remembering correctly that's part of your style wheelhouse?) requires a more cropped topper with maybe a bit of waist shaping. This cardigan is very Everlane-Instagrammer style, if that makes sense (maybe more of the standard Belgian Street Style look?). Again if I'm remembering correctly, that more minimalist style also appeals to you? So if that's the case it's a matter of figuring out a formula for combining those two looks. I think this cardigan style might work better in these combos if it were more of a tonal look rather than high-contrast as here. And yeah, it could be a size smaller.

I might be totally off base here in which case ignore me!

I LOVE the boots in the first few outfits! Is it that you wanted something with a higher shaft and more of a combat boot style? I agree that the new boots are a bit drab. Maybe look for that warmer, lighter cognac color, but with a higher shaft?

I really sympathize with the predicament of wanting to take your style in a new direction or incorporate a new silhouette but not having all the pieces at the ready to carry it out.

Thanks lisaP. Some additional considerations that have been goung through my mind: I do sort of know the kind of topper that looks best on me, which is anything with a structured collar. Perhaps because these styles aren't aplenty at retail right now I'm 'settling' for a modern style that isn't my best?
Kathie: thanks, I should really be critical of the boots and not integrate them into a fantasy life...

I like the cardigan quite a bit, and it looks like you have a number of possible outfits for it. It could be worth finding a smaller size, but I do like the length in the body of this one. I'm hesitating on the boots, because to my eye, I think you can do better in terms of the fit through the ankle. And, it seems like the color won't quite work with your existing clothes, so, at least for me, that is also reason enough to return.

Two things come to mind when I look at the cardigan: the sleeves are visually dragging the look down, and either should be shorter, or maybe pushed up for structure.....although the wide cuff might make that impossible. And two- I have a cardigan almost exactly like this, also in beige, and can count on one hand the number of times I've worn it. It does look like a useful completer piece for you though - so maybe it's just me who can;'t figure it out

I don't have much of an opinion on the boots , but it does sound like you don't have much to wear them with right now. You didn't mention jeans though - they would work really well with those, no?

Hmm, the cardigan gets mixed reactions. I checked Angie's post and it does seem I had better evaluated my winter toppers first to determine what I want exactly. Still unsure what to do though.
I had my heart set on a doc martens type lace up boot, higher shaft& lace up, but sleeker than actual combat boots. I've had this color in my palette for some years but I do see how, in this style boot, the end result may not work with my style. Any tips for stompy boots 'my way' are more then welcome.

I think your instincts are correct regarding the cardigan. It does look a bit too big. The style is very flattering though. I think that before you spend time hunting down a smaller size make sure that you are happy with this colour. It looks fine on my screen but there may be another light neutral that you would prefer. White? Pearl grey?
I’m of two minds about the boots. They sound like they would be the cornerstone of a ‘yet to be purchased ‘ capsule. What exactly would you need to buy in order to make them really useful? And do you want to commit the time and money to this capsule? Perhaps this kind of boot in a different colour would serve you better?
I don’t know if you saw Angie’s reply on LisaP’s recent thread. It’s near the end of the comments, and it’s a summary of how she works with a client in evaluating a potential new purchase. It’s excellent!

Hi Liesbeth, I vote return: to my eye those boots do nothing for you (the others you already have look much prettier and bookend your hair); the cardigan looks good, but I don't think it works to 'brighten up dark outfits': it's just too much contrast for you, although I actually like it with the green shirt and the patterned dress where it creates less contrast. By the way, I love your wardrobe <3

First: You don't need to read all of my thoughts but please note that I'm only considering returning the beige cardigan as pictured in the outfit lab, and the dark brown boots ;).

I have already done quite a bit of shopping for fall winter. Reasons being that my spring/summer wardrobe felt ‘complete’ pretty early in the season and then I got a bout of inspiration and some spare time for fall/winter.

On the one hand, I have gone over budget in the sense that I should now take a break until November. I have also shopped without really assessing my needs for the new season as my new office may require warmer (or colder) dress than before... It's still only mildly coolish here now so can't assess to what extent I'll need to bundle up.

On the other hand, I’m pretty happy with the things I got so far, and I’ve mainly replaced items that were getting outdated or worn out but that were otherwise workhorses. So no regrets! Just two question marks w/r returns.

The black and white trousers were already approved in a previous fitting room post ;). I wanted a checked pair of trousers so, check!
The LBD is a replacement. I was looking for a trendier midi but fell for this classic ladylike number with a gorgeous retro neckline. Will wear as a canvas for my scarf collection or can serve as festive wear.
My white sneakers had worn out and I'm loving this pair with the added cream and tan soles to transition into fall.
The cardigan I'm not sure about. I had gotten it into my head that I needed this style, which I love on others, and of which the color would brighten up many dark outfits, but history shows that oversize shapes can remain unworn because of the imaginary frump factor. It's a thick cotton knit with architectural drape, but I'm worried the sloped shoulders will slide off my nartow shoulders. And is it a size too large? The xs was sold out... The color is beige, not cream, so harder to pair with my mostly cool-toned wardrobe. So, I tried on in many combinations. What do you think? Keep, return, try and gind a size down?
Lastly, the boots were bought to go with midi dresses or skirts I don't yet own and to wear ankle pants into winter. That last bit is a no-go as the dark and muddy brown clashes with my fitted and sleek type ankle pants. On the one hand, I love their look and would like to work towards a small complement of midis in tweeds and muddy colors. Otoh, I hardly have anything to wear with them RIGHT NOW and they were quite expensive for such an experiment. Outfits 8 and 9 are an attempt at the look I have in my head but I'm worried I won't dare to wear this combo irl, it's quite out of my comfort zone.

Sorry for writing an entire thesis here, all thoughts and comments are welcome!
