Staysfit on "Fall Reflective Wear"

Thanks everyone! These responses have been very interesting to read. You have some very clever and unique ways of staying visible when it gets dark. I sincerely hope we all stay safe and enjoy our outdoor exercise this fall and winter.

Amy K. I have never heard of a rule requiring reflective wear/LCD lights on people or pets before. It is very common here among the walkers and runners in my neighborhood though. Maybe its one of those unwritten community standards that most people adhere to, out of social conformity or peer pressure?

Makrame, thanks for mentioning the headlamp. I think it's something many of us use and they are so helpful. I have two of them. One takes AAA batteries and one has a lithium battery. They are very bright. The lithium battery headlamp weighs less. I sometimes feel like it gives me a headache though. Maybe the strap is too tight? Maybe the light glares too brightly?

Great Firecracker! Any illumination is better than none!

Elly, your point is excellent, the light at dawn and dusk is most problematic for drivers and they are more likely to hit someone or something. The LED lights are definitely safer than the reflective tape. It's sad to think that a driver wouldn't stop for the eyes of a small animal though.

DonnaF, I'm right there with you about the skunks! I do my best to avoid them!

Those are great! Feeling guilty here. I wear a jacket that has some reflective pieces built in, and I wear a headlamp when it's dark. But yes, it's not enough.
I do stay on the sidewalks and trails, and I don't jaywalk, if that helps.

Woo Hoo! It worked, and I see there is also a flashing LCD version now in pink! Very nice, but it's "no spend September" for me, and I most definitely do not need it. NIce for someone who doesn't have one though!
The Brooks vest is several years old, so the current version is here:

As someone from a rural area, I recommend the actual LED lights over the reflective stuff, especially in small strips. The reflective stuff is less effective during the two most dangerous light conditions (dawn and dusk) and if you have a lot of critters, drivers often mistake the smaller spots for animal eyes in the dark.

I like these:
http://www.nathansports.com/vi...../lightspur

Nice exercise gear! As a recreational inline skater, I know how important being visible is, especially during dawn and dusk. I also know that this years line of running shoes has been infused with a lot of neon colour items that include reflective strips. I can't wait to get a pair of those along wit Adidas Climacool athletic pants that have a reflective strip that goes up to the waist then connects with my sports top that has the reflective strip too!

I often run in the dark because in the summer it is often too hot to run during the day so I have to wait until 7 PM or later, and in the fall/spring, the days are too short to run in daylight. My primary specialty gear items for those days is a headlamp but I also have reflective spots on most of my running gear (sneakers, t-shirts, jackets). I also have a Brooks Nightlife jacket, which is neon yellow and has some reflective strips (one of my son's friends in high school once told him "I saw your mom, and she was dressed like a highlighter" ). I like the idea of a reflective harness - might be something to consider.

Here is a link to what looks like the Amphipod reflective harness/vest in the original post. http://www.amazon.com/Amphipod.....B004DKNOTM The Finds feature does not work on this because it can only collect clothing and shoes from Amazon, and this is under Sports.

I have lighted armbands for running. They have multiple lighting patterns (think Christmas lights) so sometimes I have them blinking, other times I just leave them on. They're pink and I love them.
Of course, my jacket and running shoes also have reflective stripes and bits on them.

I have an acid green reflective vest for bicycling. Like Thistle's it is oversized for wearing over a coat in the winter, plus that makes it cooler to wear over my summer gear.

I'm not usually out walking in the dark. I do have a scooter, though, and my jackets have a lot of reflectivity built in. I also have a neon orange mesh vest with additional reflectivity to fit over a jacket if I want. When I was looking for jackets with protection (armour), most of them were black. I worry a lot about being seen on it, so I have a white helmet and red jackets.

Please everyone, think from drivers' POV and don more reflective gear!

Where I'm originally from, reflective bands, pendants and such are required for all pedestrians and dogs out before light/after dark. It really helps as a driver and I wish more regions would adopt this safety practice.

Most of mine is just built into whatever I am wearing, but honestly, it's not enough. Fortunately, I tend to exercise outdoors in the daylight hours -- part of why I like to exercise outside in the first place is to soak in the light. So I try to avoid running in the dark.
