Style Fan -- neither am I. And I have very slow internet at home, which makes uploading a pain. I usually wait til I'm at a library or cafe to share photos.

I LOVE my Tradlands shirts; I splurged during their summer clearance, which is why I'm being very strict about not adding anymore shirts for a while. I'll post a review at some point.

Sterling and karen13, I'm glad to hear this sort of post is helpful to other people. I LOVE numbers/tracking/planning posts. Before I started hanging out on YLF, I didn't have a clue what "average" or "minimal" meant for wardrobe size. Getting to this wardrobe size has involved a lot of shopping. At first it felt excessive, because I could only relate my purchasing to my own shopping history (and because I've started doing much of my shopping online, which means lots of returns). It's been hugely helpful to me to read about other people's seasonal/annual purchasing plans, and writing out my own helps keep me on track.

The next step, for me, is going to be entering Custom Finds and cataloguing my whole wardrobe, but I've been saying that for months.

La Ped -- You have introduced me to yet another new challenge. I have some time this weekend to review my wardrobe. I plan to review each piece in terms of (1) overall success in terms of life style and climate; (2) number of wears; (3) quality; (4) ability to translate to four season; (5) what would have to happen to help some pieces translate to four season; and finally, (6) what do I need for the upcoming season.

I will start the process of washing/pressing those items that need to be rotated out of my wardrobe. It is actually way too early to rotate anything new in. BUT I have finally admitted to myself that my "winter" season is really, really short. Thank you to all the Forum Members that aided me in accepting this fact. I know how much I resisted this idea in the very beginning. It finally hit home during our very warm 2016 winter.

Oh, and those heat tech shirts. I bought two of them earlier this year.

I always enjoy you posts - both your style and your lifestyle resonate with me (I live in a ski resort town and we got our first snow storm yesterday). I am starting to be drawn to numbers posts, as I am pretty (OK highly) analytical and have been rebuilding my wardrobe over the past 18 months after a big weight loss, and am wondering when to say when. So thanks for doing this - you are providing valuable guidance on many fronts. BTW those Boden wide leg jeans look great!

Style Fan -- structure but cuddly! Yes! That's exactly what I'd like to find. (Added a couple more seater-coats to contemplate below.)

Sterling -- a big part of it in a cold climate is base layers. I don't wear a lot of skinny pants, so I can put long johns or tights underneath almost all of them when it's really cold, and I have an assortment of camisoles and long-sleeve Heattech tops that extend the range of some of my lighter tops. I'd think, in the South, the challenge would be finding pieces that you like as stand-alones in extreme heat/humidity, but which layer well underneath jackets when temps drop. Of course, I'm a bit of an outlier in that my palette is fairly consistent year round. The big seasonal changes for me are that I shift away from stripes into plaids, which I guess is my version of a palette change. And I increase ankle coverage as it gets colder (taller boots, longer pants). I also shift towards more fitted silhouettes in the winter, primarily for warmth and ease of layering. Some of my oversized/boxy stuff isn't great once I need to wear a winter coat everyday, but I could consider adding a cocoon coat at some point if that becomes a real issue.

OH! I love these posts. You have reached a goal that I aspire to.

Namely having a large percentage of my wardrobe function as four season. I see absolutely no reason why that can't happen in South. I am impressed that you made it happen in the Northeast. Of course, you always impress me with your well planned and tight wardrobe.

I was also impressed that you decided to work on you Fall/Winter wardrobe given the recent temperatures. I have so yearned to do the same, but I have resisted because in previous years I came to regret it.

smittie -- I know what you mean about shirts being less stain-magnetic than pants. I also lean towards light tops/dark bottoms for reasons of flattery and (de)emphasis -- white jeans are totally outside my comfort zone, which is exactly why ended up buying a pair a few weeks ago. Love a challenge. The shirt is going to wait for cost reasons, as much as anything else. I want a Tradlands, and they're $$$.

Re: coats -- my wool coats and long puffer won't come out til sometime in November -- usually between US Thanksgiving and Christmas. I avoid bulky coats for as long as possible. This is definitely a Fall capsule. Most of the lighter weight toppers (several of which are thick wool) go away once it starts to snow in December.

lisa p -- I used to teach, now I teach a little bit and parent full-time -- but half of the teaching I do takes place outside in the woods, so I spend a lot of time in a mix of gear and casual wear. I'm also a poet and try to go to one or two readings each month. I keep a small capsule of real grown-up clothes for DH's work events, literary/theatre events, and the off chance I might interview for a full-time position at a school/uni/non-profit.

Re: skirts, I have one black jersey tube skirt that I really only like with leggings/tights, so it is de facto a F/W piece. One is technically gear (it's puffy!) but I tend to use it for casual wear, since I haven't found an actual gear use for it -- it has turned out to be extraneous to my cold-weather camping kit. So, now it's a quirky-fashion item. Due to locale, I get a ridiculous number of compliments on it. The other is a grey tweed, and matches a grey tweed blazer. I've literally never worn them together, because it's a bit too teacher/librarian, but really enjoy them as separates. One thing I know I'll add this season is a full midi skirt -- I might even add two (one solid, one patterned). I wanted one all summer and dragged my feet, but I know it's something I'll be happy to wear with boots, sneakers, sandals, pretty much anything, so, again, should be year-round items.

And yes, the Finds are a few of the additions I'm contemplating. They do read as a pretty functional/cohesive little capsule now that I look at them. :)

Jenn -- Well, I have already added two pairs of jeans... but in all honesty I added A LOT of S/S clothing this year, and did a fair amount of post-season sale shopping last winter, so my F/W needs are pretty minimal. I might, MIGHT, be approaching wardrobe-maintenance mode, which is somewhat unbelievable to me. It feels like I've been building forever (3 years!). So, 5-10 items for the rest of the year feels reasonable (and doesn't include some special holiday thing -- like a scarf or jewelry). It's not really so far off from the French 5 approach, except I'm completely incapable of identifying statements vs essentials, so it's just one big stew for me.

A white shirt is a different ballgame from white pants! Even with kids, it's much less dirt-prone. I wouldn't hesitate to start looking for them now, before your white pants experiment ends.

You seem a bit lean on shoes. Do you have enough to wear with dresses and skirts?

Outerwear also seems lean. What about a wool coat?

Interesting to see your numbers! I've been going through the same sort of transition, in demoting graphic tees and trying to up my game a little bit with other types of tops. T-shirts (and tops in general) are a weakness for me, because they're so ubiquitous and so much easier to fit than other clothing items. Your shopping list looks admirably restrained!

Julie -- the shift from tees and sweaters to woven shirts and jackets has been a conscious effort on my part for the past two years. I've been exercising a lot of restraint when it comes to buying t-shirts, and I have *finally* demoted (almost) all of my old college t-shirts (band shirts, activist slogan shirts, etc) to lounge wear or chore wear. Can't just dump them in the trash, but they don't feel like the part of myself I want to present to the world anymore (actually, I wore a band tee out in public today, but it was to lead a local family group hike, so I needed something not too precious!).

The white denim is a new experiment. I added both jeans and jacket this summer (all Angie's influence!). Less than $100 for both pieces combined, but I still feel compelled to baby them. I'd like to add a classic white shirt next year, but will only do so if wearing the white denim ends up being enjoyable rather than stressful/neurotic. (This is how I'm approaching silk for now, too.)

Interesting! thanks for sharing. I've been counting/ tracking too, so I like seeing what other people are doing. We are pretty similar- I have fewer woven shirts and toppers, but more sweaters. I also have fewer shoes but could really use more. And I get the not-around-kids-or-pets thing- I just don't have any white clothes.
Happy fall!

I packed away some of my “high summer” items this week. Even though we’re approaching 80 in the afternoons, with a 90-degree heatwave predicted for the weekend, I’m feeling pretty tired of some of my high-wear summer items (linen pants, denim shorts, etc) and ready to move on. I’ve brought out my wool sweaters, but am going to hold off wearing them, and enjoy the last few weeks when cotton is warm enough. I’m also holding off on boots for now and enjoying my sandals and flats while the weather is warm and dry. September is the most shoe-friendly month in New England. :)

My fall wardrobe is just shy of 80 items (not counting gear or undergarments). I anticipate saying goodbye to a few of these before the season is over, and adding in a few new items as well. Breakdown is as follows:

9 casual pants, 2 dressy pants

2 casual skirts, 1 dressy skirt

4 dresses -- can dress up or down

12 cotton jersey tops (a mix of short sleeve tees, henleys, bretons, and tank tops)

8 casual cotton (woven) shirts, 2 dressy (silk) tops

4 pullover sweaters and 1 cardigan,

3 hoodies and 1 crewneck sweatshirt

5 casual toppers

2 blazers

4 gear-casual outer layers (rain shell, softshell, puffy vest, puffy jacket)

9 shoes (3 sneakers, 4 casual boots, 2 dressy-ish -- oxford and mary-jane)

Over 50% of these items see year-round wear. Most of them are in heavy rotation, except for the few dressy/formal items, which I consider to be their own capsule, due to my extremely casual lifestyle. From time to time I will dress down a blazer or a silk top, but only for occasions when I’m not around children or pets, which is pretty rare! (Actually, I’ve been “saving” my white jeans and white denim jacket for kid-free occasions too, otherwise they would be perpetually soaking in peroxide solution!)

As I mentioned, this list doesn’t include specialized clothes: backpacking and running gear, my chore/painting clothes, or my lounge/sleepwear, or my undergarments/hosiery. All important, but not categories where I’m prone to overbuying, so I don’t really bother to count.

My shopping list for the rest of the year:

1 or 2 full midi skirts

1 or 2 pants/jeans

1 or 2 dresses/jumpsuits

1 or 2 sweaters/cardis

1 or 2 pairs boots/booties

NO tops! It is waaay too easy for me to buy tops and I don’t need anymore (I say this every single season, but, obviously, if the right one rolls around…).

(ETA: Sorry this is in bold; I copied and pasted from my Notepad app, and my phone freezes when I try to un-bold it or add bullet points to the lists. Ah well.)
