So right now it's fall, especially because this summer has been rather trying, both weather-wise and clothing-wise.</p> <p>I smell the seasons too. Fall has that crisp, wood-smoke, leaf-mould smell to it; winter has the very clean smell of frozen earth and snow; spring has the rich fragrance of the awakening earth and budding life (so different from just thawed earth that you get in a winter thaw); and summer has that baked or steamed odour of mature vegetation in the sun.</p> <p>I suppose the transitional seasons are the easiest to dress for, with so many more possibilities, and the quirky weather meaning there's more variety of conditions to dress for too. Summer is all about trying to look good in minimal clothing - quite the challenge when you have less than a model-perfect body. Winter (at least in my climate) means bundling up so much you can get lost in heavy coats and warm boots. But in spring and fall almost all my clothes get a chance to play at some point, layering comes into its own, and the smell of change is in the air. They always feel like the seasons of opportunity to me, in almost every way.</p> <p>I have sometimes wondered what living in a tropical climate would be like, and I have come to the conclusion that giving up the seasons would be a major sacrifice. I remember driving back home to British Columbia after having lived in California for a number of years. Toward the end of our trip, we pulled into a motel in Everett, Washington (north of Seattle) at about 7 p.m., just as the heat of the day was rising from the ground, bringing with it an earthy scent that is unique to the Pacific Northwest. As I got out of the car I immediately thought "Home! I'm home! The air smells right!" I wasn't quite home yet, but close enough that the soil and vegetation had the "right" smell. </p> <p>Shabbychick -- I can totally relate to what you say about listening to Christmas music way early. I usually start in about October, and my husband and kids make fun of me freely, but I can't seem to help myself. The smells, the colors, the crisp air...I am sooo with you!</p> <p>For style, I am not sure. think fall is better than spring because I want to wear open toe shoes but spring is too cold for that so it is frustrating. Winter is just too cold and limiting. I might like summer best as I seem to love sandals and such that I do not wear in fall and going without hose is great. Before we came to Mississippi we lived in Northern Michigan for 36 years. I miss the leaves turning in September and falling in October. I miss that SMELL, crispness in the air and football season. I still wear sweaters here, but not until November. I love fall decorating and anticipating Thanksgiving, then Christmas. Believe it or not, we've been listening to Christmas music in our home....I KNOW!!! We have such wonderful family traditions, we wait all year for them to come around again. I love the long days, I love the heat, although I do live in a very dry climate - if there was humidity where I live, my answer would likely be different. I love the light, bright, fun colors and patterns of summer dressing. Love wearing skirts and dresses with bare legs, sleeveless tops and shorts and showing off the pedicure. When I start to sense the coming of fall, I get a bit sad and have to buy a new pair of boots to make myself feel better (ha ha). Growing up in coastal CA, seasons didn't really change dramatically. When I moved to the mountains, I got real seasons. I think I'm just a fan of change. Fall wins out by a hair because I prefer the color palette. In the fall I love the feel of the new crisp air and I enjoy being able to wrap up in cozy layers without having to worry about it being too cold either. I like wearing sweaters and boots, but not having to worry about tights and hats yet.</p> <p>In the spring I love that feeling of the first few days where it's truly warm. When you can go outside with your shoulders bared and feel the sun toasting them, but no oppressive heat.</p> <p>Like I said, I just like those times when you get to feel those sensations, whether it's coolness or warmth, that you haven't felt in months and months. I'm living in a true 4 season climate (but heavy on the winter) for the first time in my life and I really enjoy having all 4. I live back on the continental part of Europe after many years and the smell of Autumn was the first thing that made me feel "at home" if it makes sense. The climate is familiar to the one where I grew up, so just enjoying this light breeze as I type ( ) and the sight of the leaves changing colors make me very melancholic and very happy at the same time. Even the smell of the new books and pencils in the bookshops, just as children prepare for the start of the new school year, made me feel like I traveled back in time as I thought "ah, September"!</p> <p>I don't know what my favorite season is. But then, I live in a climate that never has brutally hot or humid summers - average around 74 degrees all summer with a slight breeze - so, its very comfortable. I also like summer the best because it is easier for me to dress. I don't have to be concerned about more than 2 layers and I think that I look better in summer types of clothes. The cooler temps that bring out heavier clothing and layers seem to swallow up my small frame - I feel overwhelmed and lost in bulky or mulit-layered outfits! </p>
