I agree that you are often able to find better items at consignment/ thrift by narrowing your focus. Then again, paradoxically, it can also help to go in with no set agenda at all -- that's when you tend to find statement wild cards. I haven't visited a shop since end of 2019 and I am not missing them as I find online shopping gives me more time to decide for a purchase. Many things still have tags on. I wouldn't rely on them for the majority of shopping by any means, as it's easy to buy a bunch of random magpie stuff (same with boutiques). </p> <p>Here's my rules:<br /> Have a plan, but be open to special pieces (same as retail)<br /> Look only at things in my preferred color scheme.<br /> Ignore the price- cheap isn't cheap if I won't wear it.<br /> Look over the pieces carefully!<br /> Try on everything. In my rural area though, options are very limited: outlets, little boutiques, and consignment/thrift.</p> <p>Historically I haven't had a ton of luck with the last- but my focus on neutrals and more classic pieces has definitely increased my success. That's where the better quality pieces seem to be, at least in the shops near me. </p> <p>These are the things I've found lately:<br /> 2 jackets- the one that looks brown (Alfani) is olive, and it's suede! The black blazer (Jelessy) is velvet. If you turn the cuffs they're grey on the inside.<br /> 2 jeans- cropped (Loft) and full length straight (Eddie Bauer). I wrote a lot about jeans before, but both are consignment finds.<br /> 2 pants- ankle with a slit (Chicos) and wide leg (Anne Klein). I like the ankle pants with my new loafers most, and the wide legs with my ankle boots. I bought the wide leg pants at the same time as the velvet jacket and liked the combo a lot!<br /> Belt-my first in years. It's not real leather, but "cheap as chips." Belts are a great thing to hunt secondhand.<br /> Skirt- this is Athleta, and has nice zip up pockets! The hi low hem makes it swishy I've worn it several times already.<br /> Sweater- Amazon Essentials brand. I was surprised to find they have quite a few 100% cotton sweaters. </p> <p>Let's talk thrift :)</p> <p>*Retail finds post to follow* </p>
