Angie, thank you for chiming in! Interestingly, I am fine with mixing different navies, as long as they ae different textures, but flat ones would bother me. Same thing with greys.

Sal and Angie, it really comes down to personal preferences and perception, doesn't it?

Sal, our tolerances and intolerances for colour matching are so random, aren't they!

Angie- I agree that some colours are easier to mismatch than others - and navy can be one that can jar.

I think it’s where the art part of style comes in - rather than the science part.

I am 100% wth you, Tanya. And these blasting light blues - like grey - are very hard to match :(

I also relate 100% to what Brooklyn says.

Lozz-ozz, :)

When I am remixing ONE colour - like shades of red - they can mismatch, and especially when I ground and "clean-up" the look with white or cream. I remix warm and cool tones of red, quite happily,

But when remixing hectic colours - like a shocking pink dress with citron shoes and bag. The citron bag and shoes have to match. There has to be order in my chaos!

For no logical reason, I don't like wearing mismatched navies. I am fine to wear mismatched whites! I don't like to wear mismatched blush pink and light blue, but am fine to wear mismatched green!

Thank you all for you input! It is good to know that many employ a similar approach, and fun to read about different ones. What Brooklyn wrote resonates a lot.

Rucarla and Style Fan, thank you for the Parkhurst beret recommendation! I had a look on their site and they have some great stuff. Sadly, the shipping cost for the beret from Canada is almost the same as the price of the beret itself. I will try to find a US-based retailer that sells them.

Love your blue boots! I am not a 'matchy-matchy' person, and I prefer combinations similar to what Sarah has shown. I do like the colours to have the same undertone. I usually pick one accessory to be patterned to provide interest because almost all my clothes are solids.

I love berets, and I had a Parkhurst one. They are lovely.

I think I *prefer* that items not match exactly. Too matchy-matchy often leaves me feeling "flat." (Personal preference for how I adorn myself -- not disparaging matchy-matchy looks on others!)

Here is a blue scarf and gloves combination that I recently wore and really enjoyed. I don't think I would have liked it as much if the blues were a closer match.

Of course, there are limits. I suspect mixing different undertones of a color would bother me too. But then, that's partly because the wrong undertone of a color wouldn't be "my" version of the color anyway.

I agree with you.

I find that if I’m wearing an all over tonal look (say shades of teal), I have a high tolerance for complementary items that have variations in colour. Some could be bluer, some greener, some lighter.

But if I’m wearing a complementary item to provide contrast to another colour (say wearing teal outfit but with purple accessories for contrast), I might prefer the purple items to match exactly. At least 2 of them anyway. If I added more items in that colour my feelings might change. The more you items you add in a particular colour, the more variations in that colour starts to look intentional, and better (less matchy matchy), to my eye.

Hopefully Angie and Katerina and Brooklyn and others will comment as tonal colour supremos!
At the end of the day, you get to wear what feels right for you in terms of the colour mix you’re aiming for and your tolerance for match or mismatch.
Love the fab blue boots!

I think its hard if they are an identical colour because the eye picks up the differences, but as Carla said close looks good. I am not an expert on colour matching. I tend to just try and put things together, but I do realise I should put more thought into it so I don't have a lot of random pieces.

Love the blue boots!! Stunning.

I agree the undertone is more important than the colour depth. I like blush and burgundy together, but would struggle with a warm and cool blush in the same outfit.

Close but not identical works for me. Check Parkhurst for 100% wool berets in a rainbow of colour choices. I gave away an itchy black one, and picked up a replacement Parkhurst. Like you, I love a beret - and have 3!

This fall I would like to complete several of my accessory complements, as a bunch of them seem to be missing an item or two. For the cold weather, the must have pieces are:

At least one "outdoor" scarf, preferably more, a solid in the complement color and then some prints

An outdoor hat, which for me means beret, as it is the only hat shape I do not hate on myself (some slouchier beanies are passable)

Fall shoes: oxfords, booties, boots, high top sneakers - dressier types for work, more casual for other occasions

Bags: zippered totes for work, small to medium cross-body bags otherwise

Optional pieces:

Gloves - usually I do not include them in complements as I go for simple dark ones that blend with my coats

Belts - optional because I do not wear them often these days

Watches - they serve as my jewelry, in some cases I have ones that go with a complement, if not, I just use my simple silver one as universal watch

Since I am still WFH, I am focusing on my casual/non work versions this time. A good number of my complements is missing a beret, or a solid scarf, or both. I did some internet searching and realized that there are sellers on Etsy that sell wool berets and simple solid cashmere scarves in all sorts of colors, at reasonable prices, so I need to try some to check for the quality and later identify the right shades/tones of particular colors. Some complements are missing pricier items (like shoes and bags) but that is a separate issue.

Which brings me to my question - how closely do the colors need to match? What is your tolerance for mismatch? Ideally all the pieces should be a perfect match, but sometimes that is not possible, especially with rarer colors, where the complements are built over several years. Below is my light blue complement, a work in progress (need beret and solid scarf, would like some very casual shoes), which illustrates this situation. Some blues are lighter, some darker, some warmer, some dustier, some more saturated etc. I find that I prefer perfect match in items worn close (like hat and scarf), but am OK with some mismatch in items worn further away from each other (e.g. shoes and bag). Also, I am perfectly fine with lighter or darker version of the same tone, as long as has the same undertone/amount of warmth. However, I am really bothered by the pieces with different undertones - like warmer light blue and icier ones. Those clash to my eye and I do not like wearing them together.
