Aww, Jenni, I wasn’t complaining, I like the cultural assignments! I just googled and you’re right - something about the colors and layering (and tartan cut on the bias — swoon) is akin to what I’m aiming at here.

Sorry about the cultural assignments. You could just Google images of Brigadoon which is what I did this morning. The clothes are not the same it was just the feel somehow.

La Ped, oh, I like that idea about creating texture through color. I’ll keep an eye out for when I might be doing that. Great food for thought.

Re: bottoms, I have: dark wash skinnies, medium wash skinnies, black skinnies, gray skinnies, black leggings (ponte and ribbed/corduroy effect), and black and navy skirt leggings though both of those are on their last legs. That’s it at the moment!

Jenni NZ I haven’t seen Brigadoon! You keep giving me cultural assignments. As a fellow shoe gal, I frankly see no problem with your approach.

Somehow it all makes me think of Brigadoon? - I saw a stage version in London in the 80s and think I’ve seen the 1954 movie as well. Very girl on the moors, indeed.
I do think the idea of removing the scarves from contention temporarily may help to devise which bottoms and shoes would be best. I tend to pick out a colour from the pattern in a top and get shoes in that colour, but it does make me buy a lot of shoes!

You have the best conversational prints!! I love the fair isle concept; it is the complete opposite of how I like to dress but it makes so much sense for what I've seen of your style. It's almost like using colour to create texture, if that makes sense? Definitely makes me think of moors, heather, wildflowers, etc.

Like others, I'm very curious to see how your bottoms and footwear relate to these capsules. Are they fully neutral/interchangeable. Like, can you just grab any bottom and have it work with any top? Or are there specific bottoms that "go with" these capsules even if they aren't in the same colour family?

Joy great point about elongating columns of color. I am often resistant to the column of color approach, I think it can feel too "flat" to me -- but you're so right that a tonal mix could create much the same effect.

Jenn I think you're right that some sort of de-clumpifying is in order...

Angie, thanks for the vote of confidence in what I've assembled so far. It's nice to know that I've achieved aesthetic coherence even if not quite functional coherence. And thanks for commiserating re: the lovely but ever so changeable weather!

Jenn and Angie, your mention of footwear is interesting. I'm very drawn to the idea of adding colored footwear, and yet...that's one more element that I'm not wearing indoors*. Maybe bottoms need to be the first focus.

rachylou thanks! I like pattern too -- pattern on top of pattern for me. Bring it!

Suz interesting that you are experiencing the same thing. Heading over to your thread next... High-five of solidarity. And one for you too, Liesbeth.

Cardiff girl, I think you and notsaf are right. An outfit creation session and a rigorous accounting of what actually works with what is in order.

Opaline, yes on bottoms and shoes. Seems like a consensus is emerging. Will check out your thread too!

notsaf, yes, I know what you mean. The past couple of years I was really only drawn to creating interest on the top half of my outfit and keeping the bottom very simple and neutral. Now, I'm feeling a bit more open to color/interest on the bottom half. It's a process...

Runcarla, you're right on the money, I'd pretty much kill for a teal and burgundy cords or velveteen pants right now...

nemosmom yes!!! I love to nerd out on formulas too! I do think there's something to the bottom/shoe thing. I'm not sure that I always want to wear these colors head to toe, but adding bottoms and footwear would give me more ways to incorporate these colors into an outfit, increasing the sense of variety (vs. swapping out one cardigan for another...). Super interesting to think about.

RobinF I won't give up on the cropped cardis yet, don't worry -- they're too pretty and soft!!

*I've had a sneaking suspicion for a while now that what I really need to change is not my wardrobe so much as my lifestyle. Hmm...

I also noticed the lack of bottoms, they are probably all neutral? Jeans? It might be fun to add some joggers or something in your colors. Love the way you have organized tonally, I like to wear things that way too. Regarding the cropped cardis, I have found myself wanting some this year after years of preferring longer cardis. I wouldn't give up on them yet.

Another vote for needing more of these colors on your bottom half. In Angie's post about her mustard capsule, she had added 3 tops, 1 bottom, 1 topper and 1 shoe in the new color; it seemed like a good formula to reference when looking for holes (I like to geek out over numbers and formulas).

Your prints are beautiful and I love your tonal approach (rather than matchy-matchy). Maybe a pair of burgundy skinny or straight jeans would help bridge the gap for you?

Is there any way to make your cropped cardis work? With a tucked shirt or higher-rise bottom? If not, maybe exclude them from the capsule and see what you have left to work with.

Picked up on the ‘strawberry thief’ top (#3) right away, because DS#1 has the same top in a men’s cut. He pairs it with olive or mustard trousers, and when it is cold, layers a thin navy puffer over top. Definitely look at coloured bottoms. A teal or wine would be nice in a corduroy or cotton velveteen to work with your overall aesthetic.

I'm a person who doesn't mind creating variety through top + toppers combos (as per my post about the top + blazer set earlier, and your observation on it!), keeping pants neutral, and I like CardiffGirl's suggestion for outfit-building around key pieces. Perhaps time for one of Angie's on-the-body try-on sessions to see what combos you like best and what gaps (if any) there still are?

As for patterns that you love but that aren't in the perfect colorway for you on their own: have you tried wearing those with a complementing, rather than tonal topper (either cardi or scarf) in a color that you feel is better for you to cool down/warm up the look? If the saturation the tones is pretty similar, you won't be creating too much contrast, but will be pulling out the best-for-you colors. I can image the William Morris print would look really nice with a burgundy/purple family cardigan?

Ok, I am totally in love with that magnificent blush cheetah tee. Gorgeous!

I hear you. I think the problem is what Jenn identified. Pretty much everything is a top or a topper. For a capsule to work seamlessly, it needs to include accessories, one or two tops or toppers, probably at least one bottom (or one with a pattern that includes the colour). At least that is my impression.

I've been similarly inspired and plan a post on this dilemma as well. I have almost all neutrals with few colours and want to build up the colour component in at least 3 areas. And like you, I am struggling to make it cohere. Partly because I don't have all the elements in place.

Fun to have inspired your own Fall colour capsule building :)

Tonal combinations are fab! I like the vintage florals, animal patterns, and quiet colours here. They seem YOU.

I'm with Jenn on finding a solution to your challenge. Try variety in your bottoms and footwear as a way to evolve your look.

There are also lots of items here you wouldn't really wear since you work from home and are indoors most of the time. Like the small scarves that are "too much", the gloves, and the outerwear scarves. Take them away and see what you are left with. Rebuild.

(Weird weather. It's four seasons in one day around here at the moment. Temps are all over the place - and cold in the early morning when I walk Sam).

I like tonal looks because I am short and feel staying in a tone or column of color helps me look taller.. I like your blues and greens. Tonal or a column of color ( especially neutrals) helps one get dressed and to incorporate new wardrobe items.

Angie’s and Bijou’s recent posts about their color capsules inspired me to pull together and assess my own color capsules for fall.

(Obviously, I have neutral items too — I’m just looking at the colors here.)

My overall concept for my fall color palette is Fair Isle: thinking about the way that traditional fair isle knitwear contains a LOT of colors, colors can be strongly contrasting, and include both warm and cool colors, but certain colors are dominant while others can be present in very small quantities yet still crucial to the overall design, and somehow it all adds up to a harmonious whole.

That’s the aspiration anyway!

Since realizing that I really like to create tonal looks rather than exactly matching colors within an outfit I’ve been mentally categorizing my color palette a little differently. Rather than individual colors I’m thinking about shades or washes. For example:

Bluesy-greensies: Photos 1-5. Teal, petrol, bottle green, duck egg/robin’s egg, cornflower blue.

Purplesy-burgundies: Photos 6-9. Plum, dusty plum, burgundy, magenta, black cherry, fuchsia.

Pales: Photos 10-13. lilac, icy lavender, rose, ballet pink, blush. (I also include white and pale gray here but for these photos I just pulled out the colors.)

So here’s my assessment of the current state of things:

Bluesy-greensies: 2 tops, 4 cardigans. To be honest the strawberry thief is not the best color scheme for me and I don’t wear it terribly often but, well, strawberry thief. Two of the cardigans (bottle green at upper left and robin’s egg at lower left) need buttons changed. They’re also basically orphaned, because they’re cropped enough that they don’t work very well with standard length shirts. The bottle green could go be paired with the pale lavender tunic but not sure about the robin’s egg.

Purplesy-burgundies: 2 tops, 3 cardigans. I like the burgundy top with the plum cardi (top right) and burgundy (bottom right) but not sure I dig the plum top with the burgundy cardi. I wore that plum/gray cardi a ton last fall but now I’m wracking my brain to remember what I paired it with…

Pales: 4 tops (2 woven, 2 pullover sweaters, longer length).

Overall: 8 tops, 7 toppers.

Only the plum and pale lilac tunics are long enough to be worn with leggings. Everything else must be worn with structured skinnies.

2 pairs of shoes but they are really only useful in transitional weather, not in chilly-wet fall.

And I’ve included scarves here as well, although to be honest I’m not wearing small scarves all that much these days (just feels overdone for a day spent working from home) and the larger ones just come into play as outerwear.

This is sort of my perpetual problem with my wardrobe. Lots of stuff, but the whole always seems to add up to less than the sum of its parts.

Thanks for reading. Grateful for any thoughts you care to share.
