Oh, Shiny, a carryon? Oh, dear. When I do four weeks on the road, I take a carryon (with all the essentials for the next leg of the trip) AND a checked bag. I despair of variety in a single bag, but will ponder...

L'Abelle -- exactly my thinking, I am inspired to get this color scheme to work but maybe I just need to stick to basics (black pants, jacket, shoes). But I also know myself, and 4 weeks straight of recycling that formula will just kill me psychically, even if it's way easier and fits in a carryon. So somewhere I need to strike a happy balance here.

If I wear the skinny jeans on the plane, they'll bag out too much to wear again without washing them first, unfortunately. Did I mention I swell to amazing proportions all over (feet tummy all over) when I fly? My ponte knit skinnies "rebounded" better but unfortunately I've gained enough weight they don't fit so well right now. I am just so friggin' busy lately, I have time for online shopping (with DH being a dear returning 80% that doesn't fit). Ugh. *STRESSED*...

When I pack for a 2-3 day meeting, I wear one pair and bring one pair, max two pairs, in the luggage. But for 4 weeks on the road, I am thinking I'll really need more than that.

I did spend some time last night surfing through Vivienne Files and some of it is amazing and inspiring -- but to be totally honest, I was left with the reaction "all the outfits look too similar." I need to find a strategy that gives me a bit more variety, while also fitting in a carryon.... it's possible I'm being totally unrealistic.

Kate, totally agree about the try-on step! I always try every thing on before I pack it, so that is a given. I am planning in my head now, since the trip isn't for a few months, and I want to identify any gaps I might want to fill -- via online shopping -- in advance. But, all the footwear I've shown there has been thoroughly tried & tested -- I automatically discounted anything that hasn't been. That's also the trouble, if I need to acquire new shoes, I need to road test before packing.

I now have another trip to pack for, which just came up today, This one is short. I have my strategy down pat for the shorter trips. It's this longer extended trip that has my head whirling. But I do love a good challenge!

Shiny, how about one dress jacket and two dresses, using scarves to change out the looks, as a minimalist business capsule? Two pairs of business shoes and one handbag, minimal jewelry?

I think it's time to stop planning things in your head and start trying them on. And do a trial packing session and see what's taking up disproportionate amounts of space (likely contenders: shoes, boots, bottoms, jackets, chunky sweaters).

I would decide on footwear by trying each of the contenders on with each of the bottoms you're planning to bring. The two or three pairs that work with the most items get to come, the rest stay home. Any bottoms that don't work with the footwear you bring also stay home, and then from there start checking that the tops work with the bottoms, and then check the blazers and sweaters on top. It will take some time, but it can really help to make sure the proportions, colors, etc. really work together. Since the trip is 3-4 weeks, try to make sure that each top works with at least 3 of your bottoms, and each layer works with at least 3 tops (and the 3 bottoms too).

I'm tempted to just pack one black suit (jacket & matching dress
slacks) + black booties + 4 distinctly different blouses, and call it a
day... but that seems so boring!

Oh, I don't think so at all. Not if the suit's a good one. I'd go for a full suit - jacket, trousers, waistcoat, and skirt.

I looks like your colour palette is a bit narrower than the four neutrals, but this is my comment: Unless you will be speaking to a very fashion forward crowd, trying to mix multiple neutrals in one outfit is less likely to look intentional, and more like you accidentally brought the wrong footwear, or you spilled something on the jacket that was meant to go with these bottoms. That said, mixing black and grey pieces can look very classic, and you can add in cognac leather accessories and coloured or printed tops and dresses.

It also looks like you are planning the amount of clothes I would need a big suitcase for. I would lose a pair of jeans and, actually, both moto jackets; I would fly wearing skinnies tucked into the tall boots and one of the suit jackets, Inez style, over the bulkiest top. I would pack one pair of booties and one pair of walkable shoes. The trench would be perfect for Montreal; can you carry it when you fly? Black pants and grey pants, black jacket and grey jacket (I like the suggestion of tweed or a false plain like houndstooth), two jersey dresses-one black, one a print. What kind of accessories would take up so much room?

Have you looked at the Vivienne files travel wardrobes?--she shows the pieces remixed into outfits for different activities.

La Belle -

1. How many business formal items did you plan on packing? I didn't see a number.... are you still set on one carry-on?

Not sure how many business formal items I need to pack. I have 4 occasions in which I need 4 different business formal outfits. I am okay wearing same suit twice with different blouse. I am also okay wearing same black dress twice, with different accessories, but when I started down that strategy, I realized I'd be taking too much room up for accessories. A second dress will take up less room.

Yes, I am set on one carry-on because I have a tight schedule between each city, and if my luggage doesn't make it -- even if it's a little late -- I'll be totally screwed, especially because I do not wish to travel in a business suit.

On the plus side, the advantage of being only 5'0 tall means that you can pack more in a carry on. I know from experience that I can fit a ton of blouses as they take up very little room. Plan would be to wear one sweater + one topper on the plane. I roll everything and I find that I can fit a lot more this way. Shoes, however, do take up room. The snakeskin booties squash down nice and flat, which is why I would like to bring them if I can get them to work.

2. What is the projected weather where you are planning to go?

Mid 50s to low 70s - starting North and heading south.

3. How many actual days per city?

It's going to vary. I also don't want to detail out my travel schedule, for privacy reasons. Let's just keep it general and say this - 4 cities and at each one:

First day fly in, go straight to work (no time to change). Dress code -smart casual.

Second day, business formal.

Third day fly in, go straight to work (no time to change). Dress code- smart casual.

Fourth day, business formal.

Weekend (Friday/Sat/Sun) - downtime to myself, possibly with DH joining up with me.

Rinse, repeat.... with temperatures warming up as I move south...

I need to get to work soon, and will come back and address all the questions when I can, but quickly:

The trip is in the fall, in October, weather will range from mid-50s to low 70s, according to the averages. It is looking like I'll be on the road for 3-4 weeks straight. Still mapping out the plan, but instead of flying back home for the weekend, DH and I are plotting out how he can meet up with me along the way, to spend a vacation weekend here and there. I am not worried about having to do laundry as necessary (I may even have time to visit my parents mid-trip, so I can do laundry there!). I could always have DH take some items home for me, and bring me additional items, provided I think it all through very carefully.

Meanwhile I've put together a second slide that shows some alternative items already in my closet that did not make my initial cut...

I'm also including in here my two additional tall boot options:
- Chocolate brown pleather wedges that I'd prefer to pack, but not sure they are dressy enough?
- Wine boots - sorry this is only pic I have, you can't see the toes. They are dressier. These are zippered boots, with 2-inch heel, and pointy toe, which is trending. (NOTE: that hot pink skirt no longer fits me)

And also I have blue suede boots. I opted for black instead, but you tell me... it would have to be either or.

A few more leopard items (shoes, clutch)

Some alternative dresses along the same basic color scheme.

Yes! This is almost exactly what I was going to say. 2 dresses, 2 blazers, 1 suit pants, 2 shells or blouses.
Before I started culling from the grouping you have, I'd try to pile on as many layers to wear in transit.
If that doesn't cut it, I'd go down to one pair of jeans, lose 2 blouses, lose one of the moto looking jackets and toss one pair of booties and one sweater.
However, as posted, and with wearing one full outfit, I'm thinking this will all fit in a nice carry on bag.

I looked again at both of your links, and your WIW's. When I looked at them, I realized that I can't tell whether the bottoms you wear are the same from photo to photo, or different (your white jeans come to mind). So I wouldn't stress too much about people recognizing your skirts or pants every time you wear them.

Also keep in mind, I often see men wear the same suit day after day, and nobody seems to notice or comment, or care. They just swap out shirt + tie, and occasionally, trousers + belt

I have a couple of questions:

1. How many business formal items did you plan on packing? I didn't see a number.... are you still set on one carry-on?

2. What is the projected weather where you are planning to go?

3. How many actual days per city?

I would suggest (as a minimum)

2 black skirts (one very structured, one that is softer. Is a VC tube skirt nice enough for business formal? This skirt can double for casual sight-seeing or going out)

1 black pants

1 matching black jacket

1 wildcard black-based jacket (black with a subtle pattern or texture: black/ink or black/white tweed that is Chanel-esque - which you can wear out with jeans during your downtime)

Black business shoes

Black belt

White button-down blouse or knitwear top

Then create your neutral outfits off of this:

Silver-gray (light gray):
At least one top or sweater, including a knitwear top
Scarf with silver-gray color in it
Leather Wrist cuff (if it packs flat) or silver jewelry

Cognac:
Shoes
Belt
Bag (something that will lie flat - pack your underwear, socks, hosiery, accessories in this)
Animal Print Scarf that picks up the cognac

Ink/Navy:
Sweater
Knitwear Top, maybe in a pattern with black
Scarf

Blush:
Scarf
Rose-gold watch or bracelet
Pearl studs that have a hint of pink to them
Blouse or knitwear top

I didn't list any dresses - unless they are a soft jersey that can be rolled up and stuffed in the bag, they aren't as versatile as separates for the space they take up in the bag. Depending on how limited your packing space is, I think scarves and small jewelry pieces are the way to go, to make your outfits very different. Also, don't forget, a cardigan sweater can do double-duty as a topper or a blouse.

I would concentrate on what you would wear for business and eliminate one pair of the jeans and the most bulky top that you are thinking of for casual.
I'd leave the snake booties but take the leopard. If you need to cull more and the skirt works with your jackets, you might eliminate one of the dresses. I need to look at your selection on a larger screen to comment about color of boot. This is quite a challenge.

Without analyzing the pieces, just the numbers, this looks like a lot. 8 tops, 5 bottoms, plus a dress, 5 pairs of footwear, and 4 jackets. I think you could cut down to 4 bottoms (2 work, 2 jeans) plus the dress, 5 tops, 3 jackets, and 4 shoes.... I think you can get away with wearing black dress pants several times as they are fairly nondescript, and can be worn with such a variety of tops/toppers.

I personally think I'd drop the skirt and the high boots.

Good luck - quite a challenge!

Some great ideas here!

Did I neglect to mention that this has to all fit in a carry-on luggage, INCLUDING everything else I'm taking for the smart casual/flying/weekend portion of the trip? I'm not sure this is actually possible, but since I shudder at the risk of losing luggage between cities, I'm going to aim for this goal....

Here's what I've got so far (see pic), with commentary, and the jury is out whether this will all fit in a carry-on! I may need to pair this down....

1) Two dresses, the trusty RL black jersey, and a ponte knit grey/plum dress that can stand alone without a jacket (actually, I can't layer over it very easily). Both these dresses work with the tall boots, and the leopard booties. I don't like the way they look with the black booties for some reason.

2) Matching AT black suit jacket + black dress pants.

3) Second suit jacket, charcoal grey, Theory. My most tried & true suit jacket, goes with everything & anything, for business or for casual.

4) 5 blouses. Not sure the navy one works under a suit jacket. Will have to test that out.

5) 3 sweaters of varying thickness (two of these were perfect in the spring on my trip to San Fran; the third is heavier, the Autumn Cashmere high/low sweater from NAS).

6) Leather Veda jacket, which I'd probably wear on the plane, so it doesn't need to fit in the bag. Can work as outerwear or as a topper indoors.

7) New zip topper from NAS - for smart casual/casual portion of the trip.

8) VC ruched midi skirt. I'll have to try this with the suit jackets to see if I can make it work for business formal, otherwise, I'm thinking about it for smart casual/casual/flying (worn with the tall boots on the plane so they don't need to be packed).

9) Grey BR sloans (on order) - which I can already imagine will work for both business and casual.

10) AG skinny jeans - problem with these is that they bag out a lot, so I am dubious about taking them along for an extended trip....

11) BR trouser jeans - tried & true with three of the blouses for smart casual/i.e., they can be swapped with the black dress pants to "dress down" after the formal part of the day is over.

12) Two bags: black cross body & a fold over cognac clutch (birthday gift from my hubby). Will travel with cross-body tucked into laptop bag, and clutch in the suitcase, probably filled with underwear.

13) Two pairs of flats: black Naot's and snakeskin booties.

14) Tall boots - black suede. Or, I could take my wine/burgundy dress boots instead?

15) Two pairs of booties, leopard print & black

16) Grey & white BR scarf

17) Not shown: a second scarf that has geometric print with plums & pinks & a touch of blue, and will tie a lot of this together. One or two layering tees. Additional belts (I do have a leopard belt and a cognac belt). Trusty black cardigan with gold buttons, which I always bring and is permanently packed in my laptop.

Questions:

Do the snakeskin booties work with the cognac clutch? Or am I nuts?

Regarding tall boots -- Should I take the black suede tall boots, or wine/burgundy dress boots (which may be more practical if it rains)? I do not, unfortunately, have any cognac tall boots, and expecting to find some before this trip is not realistic (have been looking for cognac boots for over 5 years now!). There's always my chocolate brown pleather wedge boots, which have an outdated square toe, but which I can walk infinitely in, and work great for rainy weather. They'd actually be my preference from a comfort/versatility/practicality perspective -- but I am just not sure they are dressy enough for the formal business portion.

Would you wear the leopard print booties with the charcoal/plum dress?

Outerwear: I'm contemplating whether the Veda leather jacket, with thick sweater underneath, will be enough for the Montreal portion of the trip, so I don't need to bring a long coat. I'd like to avoid taking a puffer, because I don't think I'll need it except in Canada. I'd think I'd take the Burberry trench instead, if I really need a long coat?

Let's assume for now all of this miraculously fits in a carry on. What tweaks could I make to pull it all together? I.e., what could i substitute (not add) to get even more mix-and-match mileage?

If it doesn't fit in a carry on, what would you REMOVE?

I figured out my whole plan, and then realized that it's almost identical to Cerinda's! Two suits that can be mixed, 4 tops all in different colors, one or two pairs of shoes and accessories, and a big bag in the color of your choice (I think it could be any of the four neutrals).

Also, no matter how formal an event is, I always bring a pair of dark jeans and a non-formal jacket so that I can transition to nighttime looks easily. Going out for drinks in a suit, especially if others have dressed down, can be awkward. I also don't enjoy flying wearing business formal. And finally, you never know what life will throw at you, and at one conference I ended up spending a lot of time visiting a friend who was in the hospital. I really wished I had brought a pair of jeans.

Ha. I might not try to combine all 4 in one outfit for travel( meaning full - on mix & match with limited pieces.
Where the best option for rich, interesting business formal versatile travel capsule lies, IMO, is in introducing cognac leather bag or belt to black & gray outfit , or navy if that's your neutral. Next is if you have suiting in tweed, plaid or that scrumptious dark floral ( or a dress in same) and then solid color for unmatched suit or jacket. To me, a major neutral mash up requires careful texture mixing and that can be easier with informal pieces( denim and sweaters) or if you've got access to your whole closet, or a suit jacket in a tweedy fabric that works with solids in different fabric textures. It can be harder to mix up suit pieces in semi- similar, solid fabrics.

As I remember, you look great in black, do I would go with a suit of black slim trousers and blazer. A LBD that works with the suit jacket, grey or navy slacks that are not super dark, and a variety of tops in colors or other neutrals. I'd have black or grey and cognac pumps/booties, a black and a cognac belt and cognac satchel and black, grey or navy clutch. A cognac leather jacket or coat that is formal enough would be great.

I'd do all pants, no skirts or dresses. 3 pants, black, navy, grey. Two suit jackets, black (also wear with jeans) and grey or navy. Could get away with just the black jacket if space is an issue. Cognac booties. Black belt, cognac belt. Navy silk blouse, pink/plum silk top (something with an interesting neckline perhaps?) and black/white print blouse. Longchamp Le Pilage tote in black with those cognac handles. Necklace with presence, mixed pearl, amber, black.

Jennifer, how are you doing for dresses? You love dresses, right? Don't you have some great ones that you could use here with a jacket? Or does the pants jacket not work with dresses?

I am just thinking that they can often be had in ponte or jersey fabrications so they don't wrinkle the same way. But I guess seasonless wool should also work (in a suit).

Cutting to the chase, since I am known to get long-winded when posting late at night:

How would you take Angie's navy + grey + cognac + black theme here http://youlookfab.com/2014/07/.....and-black/, and translate that into 4 different business formal outfits you could pack into your suitcase? You can add an accent color of blush pink/plum, because that is what I'm working on for my upcoming business travel (see http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....al-capsule).

Business formal defined as: a suit. Could be
- dress + jacket
- jacket + dress slacks + blouse
- jacket + skirt + blouse

Notes:
- Suit jacket is required -- cannot get away with a leather jacket or jean jacket or cardigan or other fun topper. And no jeans, not even dark wash jeans.
- Can be mix-and-match

I'd like to see what you all come up with and propose before I launch into my own "ya but's"... I have a couple already, since my mind has been trying to bend around this challenge this evening, as I contemplate the options hanging in my closet...

I think I have the "smart casual" portions of the trip well covered, with ample options for the days when I'll be working but not customer-facing, or enjoying downtime on the weekend, or traveling between cities. It's just these 4 days when I need business *formal* that are presenting the challenge, because I'll be seeing the same exact set of coworkers so I can't get away with wearing same exact outfit 4 times.

I'm tempted to just pack one black suit (jacket & matching dress slacks) + black booties + 4 distinctly different blouses, and call it a day... but that seems so boring! So I'd like to get your ideas here. Bring 'em on...
