Jenn, I forgot you're a silk floral artist! Of course you like pretty things :)

YES. You create a fab balance adding tough elements and '90s grunge to your pretty. Works like a charm.

You have to literally think, "how many miles from the ocean am I going to be today," and calculate clothing on that basis. At least that's how I planned when I lived in L.A.

Angie, you're just the best. So encouraging! As someone who makes flowers for a living, it would be pretty crazy for me to turn my nose up at pretty things. It is a fine line to walk, though, wearing pretty pieces without being too dainty or prissy. You do it by adding graphic and modern. I think I do it by adding a bit of 90s grunge.

Suz, I woke up this morning and asked my husband if we could start planning a trip to the mountains. I am going to miss winter so, so, so much!

Brooklyn, hooray to the mending and making do! I need to be better at that. I love the idea of rescuing older shoes with the Tarrago. I have a pair that I should consider that for. Oh! And if you go grunge in the summer, and I do in the winter, we'll be there at the same time. :)

cindysmith, I think a no-buy challenge would be so hard! Once I set it, I wouldn't be able to think of anything but things I wanted to buy and couldn't!

OMG Sal, that's so true about ending up with a top you really didn't want to be seen in when you take a topper off. I've had that happen at the theatre before, where I had on a camisole and jacket and it just got too hot to keep the jacket on, but the cami felt too skimpy for the setting.

SarahD8, I have to laugh here, because the weather reports for LA include different temperature ranges for the valley, beaches, desert, and mountains. On days when we're out exploring, we not only have to account for different times of day, but totally different biomes!

lisap, I will say that all the locals I've chatted with since moving have literally apologized to me for the weather. Until the past week or so, it's just been miserable with heat advisories and abnormal amounts of humidity. It was nicer here while I was in the hottest part of the year in Colorado in July and August, so I pretty much got a double dose of hot summer this year.

Joy, I'm surprised that I've already reached for my cashmere sweater in the evenings!

Opaline, the Sundance blouse came yesterday, and I'm pretty sure I'm keeping it. I'll likely add a second statement as well, along with a duster sweater (essential for me) and maybe some new booties. I'm really due for a decent refresh, so October may wind up being a big month.

bonnie, I live in the valley, so it's definitely hotter here than closer to the ocean. My husband's dream is to have a beach house, but alas, that wasn't in the cards given the commute.

Jane, I've always been about the comfortable shoes, but my feet have definitely gotten finickier as I've gotten older. Plus, city pavement is hard on the feet!

Style Fan, your wardrobe is so inspiring to me. Thanks for chiming in!

nemosmom, jackets are another thing I need to think about! I sold two jackets before leaving Colorado because I wasn't happy with the way they fit, but that means I have very few options! We'll see what I feel like I need come winter!

RobinF, I don't think I always hit the mark with the pretty/grungy, but I'm trying!

Bijou, I've actually been looking at some vests for that very reason. It seems like a way of layering without over-doing it

This is a really interesting discussion, Jenn. I can relate to feeling like one's style shifts back and forth with the seasons -- maybe not just shifts, but cycles. It will be so interesting to see how this shakes out for you in your new climate. I can also relate to the difficulty of dressing for mild but changeable weather -- I have really not been hitting the mark this transitional season. This afternoon I put a lightweight coat on when I left the house for an interview, by the time I got to my destination I was so boiling hot that I stashed the coat in the trunk of the car, and then on the way home my feet were overheated in my riding boots BUT as soon as I got out of the car I realized I was way underdressed -- the temp ha dropped 15 degrees F in about 40 minutes!

Haha I go more grunge in winter (maybe hairy unkempt hermit than grunge......)

My pick is that your silhouettes may change a little due to different layering needs....And the need for on and off toppers during the day. It is hard to plan sometimes because you can end up in a raggy skimpy top if you take off a jacket you did not plan to.....

Excellent! We need more grunge on this forum. But I think I go more grunge in summer. The summer grunge starts in my hair and works it’s way down to my feet. You should see what state my EF sandals ended up in by the end of last summer. I’m sure your LA version of grunge will be way more stylish.

Well done on thinking this through. It’s great when the planning/creative process of style becomes more pleasurable and satisfying than the buying process. I think I’m getting to that stage too.

And I am also endeavouring to buy fewer and better. And to mend and make do! So I will be restoring the EF sandals with Tarrago for another sweaty summer season

It's going to be so interesting to see where your style goes with this weather shift. It really does make a difference. But knowing you, you'll find a way to evolve with mindfulness. Footwear and bags are a win-win type purchase -- they *always* get a lot of wears.

Jenn, it's always a pleasure and treat reading your musings. You are eloquent, cohesive, organized, disciplined, walk your talk, sincere, logical AND emotional. You are in touch with who you are and it comes out in your style and writing. You put in the effort and reap the reward. What a stylish inspiration you are.

*TOES TICKLED*

Now onto what you said...

YAY FOR THE WALKING LIFE! Now you know why comfy shoes and the best bags are non-negotiable for my lifestyle :)

Recalibrating your seasons will be very interesting to watch. I'm excited! I see the same Jenn with lighter layers and more sandals.

Thanks for using the word pretty. I LOVE pretty things, and it gets a bad wrap because many prefer to be tough, strong, powerful, athletic and bad-arse. WELL! I think you can be all those things - wearing pretty clothes.

Adore and appreciate your style, style direction, evolution, and the way you have described it. ROCK ON!

Sunny 72 F is very common weather where I live and my most favourite weather - perfect for dresses with boots! Sometimes it can be too warm for a jacket, but this is when vests are really useful, my peplum vest is in finds and is an easy topper when you don't want too much warmth.

What wonderful thought you have put into your plan! I nodded along with you and your natural gravitation toward a more grungy/urban look in the cooler Cali months - I lived in jackets and shackets (button shirts worn as outerwear) when I lived there. I envy and appreciate the consideration you give to adding new essentials. I hope you will keep us updated on your process!

The transitional weather is still throwing me after moving. I feel the need for long sleeves and a variety of toppers.. You can develop a year round wardrobe as your seasons are less defined or you can think of it as more than one season in a day. Plan for layers. Eventually you will feel the cold more. You do your first goal very well and the thought you put into each addition to your wardrobe is very impressive.

Aww Momo, that's so sweet! The secret is, though, it's never really done. Most of the time, I'm quite happy with my wardrobe, but right around February/March and August/September every year, I just get DREADFULLY bored and have to re-evaluate. I'm late this year, but I'm definitely feeling the nothing-to-wear blues right now.

rachylou, I've been spending mornings and evenings up on the roof (my second living room, really) and that's definitely sweater weather! 72° is, as shevia pointed out, hot in the sun and cold in the shade. I think I'd be happier at 60 or 65!

Opaline, Colorado had the near-constant sunshine. It was just sometimes below freezing when the sun was out! Thanks for the well wishes. It will take a while to get acclimated to Cali, I think. We're settling into our house and neighborhood, but I still don't have any sort of life here, if that makes sense. I think it'll take a while.

Aquamarine, it seems like it should be so easy, but it's not!

I live on the opposite coast and it’s 72 here maybe 5 days a year, and I STILL struggle with what to wear at that temperature!

In that in between weather my biggest challenge is the indoor/outdoor problem. Often it is warmer in the sun than inside buildings and my home and I hate to be cold. My best is walking outside in the sun and a big hat. Do not forget the big hat !

Near constant sunshine really can alter a wardrobe.

I love your new t-shirt & speaking of Coco, that was such a sweet cartoon movie. I loved her.

I look forward to seeing what you add for fall.

Your wardrobe is a work of wonder, the way it functions.

I hope Cali is starting to feel more comfortable/homey for you bit by bit.

Floral silks and worn leather together is very LA to me. Re the walking: I feel I walk a lot in LA. Maybe because I’m always there as a tourist. But maybe because you drive, park and walk to where you’re going.

Anyways, that 72 is a tricky one to me. Half the time, that’s sweater weather for me. I put a lot of thought into that one, lol.

I am so in awe of your wardrobe and the thought behind it . I was thinking this weekend that I want my wardrobe to be as well thought out and pared down as Jenn’s

So normally, October would feel pretty late for fall style planning, but seeing as it's supposed to rise back into the 90s next week, I think I'm okay. :)

I've been feeling a pull recently towards more edgy styles, but, while I initially thought that was a shift brought on by the move, I looked back at some old posts and realized I felt the same way last autumn, or at least, I predicted this would happen once I moved into the city. In general, my fall/winter style is more grungy/urban than my spring/summer style, and my new, urban neighborhood just accentuates that.

Keeping that in mind, some goals for the coming season:

1. Balance pretty with grungy. I love florals and silk, but I also love worn leather and olive canvas. The key is balance, and realizing that my mood can shift back and forth between the two.

2. Recalibrate seasons. I have great outfits for when it's 90° and when it's 40°. I have very little for sunny and 72°. It's sunny and 72° A LOT here in LA.

3. Fewer but better. I'm getting SO much better at this. The average number of wears for items in my closet right now is 36. The median is 28. I want to keep being careful with my purchases, taking into account sustainability and quality, especially with my essentials.

4. That walking life. LA may be a car culture city, but my neighborhood is quite walkable and I hate driving in the city, so I plan to walk a lot. That means more emphasis on shoes and bags which, luckily, are two of my favorite categories!
