It’s so interesting to hear that people feel bullied or scolded during facials! I often feel that way during massage. They say disapprovingly “you’re so tight!” like I am so deeply flawed. And I’m like, yeah, that’s why I’m here getting a massage...???

Hi Sal --

First, I feel your pain on which to prioritize in the budget -- in my ideal world there'd be room for plenty of clinical facials/skincare products and deep tissue massages!

Because 40s/50s is where any and all of our lifestyle habits seem to show up on our face, even we low-intervention types seem to consider action!

I have some pigmentation and broken blood vessels/rosacea issues, and as an expressive no-Botox-thanks person still have my "11s," upper lip crinkles, and forehead furrows. In addition to lighting(!) I find lifestyle + skincare minimize their prominence.

Louder than 1000 words: I've attached a photo that includes a rather too-close-for-comfort shot of my ~ 50 y.o. skin with no makeup in indoor natural light (minimal makeup in outdoors + artificial indoors there too). Issues mentioned above on display + dark circles added bonus haha.

FWIW:

Sensitive skin and mild rosacea here, so I do have to be careful re products. However, I have changed from "do no harm" skincare to "do no harm + add benefits" skincare and am pleased. That includes a pro treatment ~ 1-2 year (budget depending).

Spending more on skincare means I spend relatively little on makeup for my faux-natural look -- a little "shoe math" there, perhaps!

Worth mentioning I've spent most of my adult years in a rainy climate, though I didn't start daily sunscreen use til my mid-40s (bad Vix!).

***** begin novel! ****

Anyway...I certainly agree SPF, hydration, and exercise matter for skin health and appearance. Sadly IMO, skin (collagen) prefers a low-sugar (including low-alcohol) lifestyle. WHY O WHY haha.

Going back in time here -- I hit my mid-30s having done nothing but Cetaphil cleanser and sunscreen/hats during prolonged outdoor time for skincare. For a bunch of reasons I'll skip over for semi-brevity I started having *very* regular facials that included extractions. This lasted a few years. I had great pros, so nothing irritated my skin but I think the only real benefit was sloughing off layers to let daily products work more effectively. Which *is* a benefit!

From then on I did use a moisturizer and various bits and bobs but really shied away from products due to aforementioned rosacea.

In my mid-40s I stopped using "does no harm" stuff frequently rec'd *by* derms like Cetaphil, CeraVe, etc. Instead, I started using of of the less-expensive derm-created-and-controlled lines. I've mentioned it here frequently but it's Epionce, and they have shelled out for some clinical studies on their products.

The "do no harm + benefits" products have a lot of ingredients deemed effective by various anti-aging and/or anti-acne gurus and Reddit skincare threads. ;)

The way the raw ingredients get buffered matters a lot re irritation -- or in my case, lack thereof.

Ok -- back to pros / facials whatever.

I found a pro who uses Epionce's fairly high-octane BHA/AHA peels, said to boost collagen production after ~ 6 weeks. Pretty much the same price as all the "spa" facials in town, no extractions, zero downtime. The first year I did 3/year, now I do 1 and if the budget permits I'll squeeze in another. [These are not "months-long recovery time" peels...but I do need to be super-super vigilant re sun protection for a period and there's some flaking a few days in.]

Also -- I know there are a fair amount of intense peels sold for DIY, but I prefer to be under supervision with controlled products.

Novel wrapping up...if you can find a "med-spa" type of skincare pro with a great track record, good products, and a vibe you like then I think a facial or 2 a year can enhance daily efforts!

I’m pretty low maintenance, other than a couple of professional pedicures in the summer, and monthly therapeutic massages in addition to regular haircuts.

I have a wonky back and various aches and pains appear from time to time. My body seems to appreciate regular massages. My LMT is extremely skilled and I like her as a person very much. Time and money well spent.

I’ve had a handful of facials. They’ve felt wonderful in the moment, but I’ve never noticed any lingering results. And the sales pitch for products can make it all pretty expensive.

In terms of personal care my priorities are
- haircare
- massage
- nails/facial

I look after my own hair removal. I was getting gel painted nails but am taking a break as I do every so often. My last facial was probably four years ago.

My hair is booked regularly every six weeks - and a sports massage about the same unless I get a flare up (which I have at the moment).

I would prioritise the hair and massage over clothing, bags and shoes.

I do feel privileged to be able to afford the massage.

Wow. I’m shocked that anyone would ever prefer a facial over a massage. For me massages are so important to reduce headaches and pain. Facials I’ve never prioritized because I do better when I stick to the products I know and have at home that I know won’t irritate my skin and make it red.

I haven’t had a massage in too long and I will be scheduling one as soon as I’m able to do it safely.

Interesting! Massage is actually way more a functional, ‘necessary’ (in a privileged sense) for me. I get it to fix certain pain points, etc. Facials are relaxing pampering for me. If at a spa, rather than pure massage, I’ll more likely choose a beauty treatment which may incorporate light massage, like a body scrub or something with hot stones. For massages, I’m looking for a qualified practitioner in a specific discipline (ie. Thai massage) who probably doesn’t do esthetics (I realize some spas employ massage professionals as well).

I used to get professional facials and my skin responded extremely well to the pampering. But it was the esthetician that made all the difference in the world and my facials were phenomenal. Then she left and the others who replaced her did not come close to matching her level of expertise so I stopped looking for a replacement and luckily have been able to maintain everything myself.

The entire 50 minutes from start to finish were relaxing. When her hands and fingers were not on my face (i.e. during a peel process), she was massaging my neck, arms, and hands. The products she chose worked wonders for me. Others who followed her made the entire facial less than relaxing. When I say no extractions, I mean no extractions. And please do not let me hear your phone ringing and do not wash your utensils while I am on the table!

So if you loved the whole experience I would recommend you keep doing so.

I have a couple times, but they just made my skin worse (temporarily, I think it was just a sensitivity thing). I'd be open to doing peels, lasers, etc., but a traditional facial seems like a waste of time to me; I can reproduce it at home and not get yelled at for my skin or not buying a giant cache of whatever brand the spa sells.

Interesting!

I believe in massage - and foam rollers etc. I do that regularly and it helps with some shoulder buggies. It is a sports type massage.

The facial used clinical ingredients - it was a chemical type peel I guess. I did notice an improvement but it is pricey!! There is a range of approaches to skincare and anti aging. And much of it is luck or lifestyle or climate. I am lucky to have oily skin ( didn’t think that as a teen though) but my skin does get clogged with many sunscreens. I have signs of aging for sure.

Thanks all for sharing - clearly we all have different approaches and preferences.

I am with Christina F! Funny, I think the world is divided into Team Facial or Team Massage, as you can see from the responses here! I hate facials and my dermatologist has told me they are total bunk, although if you have glow-y skin that is improved by a facial, lucky you! I find them completely annoying, and I can't relax, since it's not exactly calming to have an aesthetician picking at your skin. Give me a hot stone massage any time and I will glow just from the sheer bliss!

This is predictable- never. I got a voucher for my 40th for something- can hardly remember- maybe a massage and that's the only time I've had one of those either. Professional bias but I reckon medicine is the way to go- I have seen women spend goodness knows how much on beauty treatments when they really needed acne medicine.
Shoe currency kicking in again!- I'd rather spend money on something I can keep.

I actually hate getting them. I usually get scolded for my pores or having acne, and told I should be instead using products X,Y, and Z. Then, if use products with the correct ingredients (rather than the expensive ones they try to sell me), not much changes. Being scolded is one of my pet peeves, so this is a big turn off for me.

I found an esthetician last year who didn't scold and said she'd send me recs for affordable products I should use, but she never did (fair enough, since it would have taken up her time for free).

I do love a massage, though.

I tend to only get massages and facials when I go on vacation and stay at a resort with a spa. However, the place we have stayed at in Cabo a few times is so good, it has kind of spoiled all other massage and facial experiences for me! LOL

I would like to try having both more often than once a year though. I have been thinking of researching the best ones in my area and booking something.

Like bj1111, I’ll do a facial over a massage, but both fall into the non-essential, pampering category for me. I do see a bit of brightening in my skin, that lasts a few days, but my reasons for getting a facial are for pampering, down-time, and a pick-me-up from winter weather, since it’s usually January or February when I crave one.

I would love to have regular facials but I’m afraid I can’t justify the spend.l think that they fall into the realm of pampering which I can do at home.Tweakments that is facial treatments that have a degree of science behind them ie laser ,Botox etc are more likely to work I feel but again I haven’t gone down this route.

I have a terrible skin, like teenager that is getting old. Akne scars and wrinkles. I do have classic facial few times a year for deep cleaning, and microdermabrasion and chemical peels to improve texture. Not sure if it is worth it, have not seen much difference before and after.

Nope - sunscreen is a girls best friend! Gentle cleansing, appropriate moisturizing and a boatload of sunscreen, hats, sun protective clothing. Like Runcarla said if facials literally put your head in a good place and don't cause irritation or break you out or leave marks and you enjoy them and have the cash for them - then like all pampering - enjoy. For me, I'm a no frills girl. I keep my eye on the ball protecting and being super gentle to the skin that I have!!

It makes me jealous to hear that hot yoga does wonders for others’ skin- it makes me break out like crazy! I have to remember not to do it before an event.

I have gotten facials but feel that at-home results can be just as good if you treat yourself to some nice products and just take the time to massage, massage. And, for me having to make and keep an appointment is not relaxing.

But if it’s somerhing you enjoy, go for it! I think it’s great to show your body you care

I've never had a real facial but it sounds lovely! Like stylefan, my skin is moody. But Sal, sounds like it was a benefial and enjoyable experience for you, so if you can swing it, I say enjoy a few more though the year

Sal---you read my mind, i've been thinking on this same topic the last couple of weeks....the past half a dozen years i've treated myself to a facial once a year or so, i've generally found them to be more relaxing then actaully good for my complexion....but a 2 years ago, while on vacation my sister and i had a rainy day spa treatment, and that facial was both relaxing and complexion improving...alas as i said we were on vacation, so no chance of going back to that aesthetician on a regualar schedule....i've been thinking about trying again here in my home city....

My daughter is an aesthetician. She has set me up with skin cleansing and care products that work very well for my skin. The hydrating masks and skin renewal ampules are my favorite. I do use an SPF, drink lots of water and take a few infrared saunas a week. The sauna helps with detoxification and provides other anti aging benefits for skin.
All of these things help keep my skin in good condition. I do have a few facials each year, to remove impurities or for extra hydration. Sometimes I will go more for a pampering treat. Everyone has different skin needs, so it is wise to consult with a specialist. A certain product or more (or less) frequent facials may be recommended.

My belief is that facials fall into the realm of pampering, although they can also be beneficial for folks of a certain age who deal with impurities. I'm thinking mainly teenagers. I've enjoyed facials, but didn't see any lasting effect. My skin looks its best after a good exercise induced sweat!

I believe in 'body work' though, and the benefits of therapeutic massage.

I do like facials but I wouldn’t say they are part of my regimen. I like a retinol, a peptide, and vitamin C... I think those are very effective and focus on those things.
