I had facials when I was in my late twenties and early thirties. My skin would look worse than it did before the facial. I had always had good skin and never had a pimple until I started having facials. Then I ended up with red inflamed skin and huge cysts. I stopped the facials when I finally figured out what was causing the problem. No more facials for me.
I do go for waxing, threading (brows), pedicures and lash tints. I occasionally go for a manicure but I keep my nails short now.
My skin is pretty good. My routine is simple. I might look into the photo facials that Lisa goes to if they are available near me.

Interesting about the photofacial and laser options. It sounds like some of you can get that done at the salon, not just at the dermatologists?

Thistle, I'm glad I'm not the only one - I didn't mind the face touching quite so much, since I could prepare for it, but the whole experience is kind of exhausting, with the forced proximity for a long time with someone you've never met before, in a strange environment, where you have to be friendly...I'm never going to find that kind of thing truly relaxing. Even massages, I find kind of neutral - the physical manipulation is relaxing, the having to deal with someone I don't know that well in my space, and all the little social niceties, not so much.

To answer the question about what you get done, I regularly get my brows waxed/groomed. I've had my legs waxed in the past but now that I have a bigger shower that's easier to shave in, I stick with that. I was never a big mani/pedi person, but for a while one of our local Whole Foods locations had a natural nail salon, and I got so I'd get a pedicure there regularly. Unfortunately, they shuttered that service, and as most of the nail salons around here use all kinds of sketchy chemicals, don't take appointments online, and are otherwise completely exhausting, I'm back to doing it all myself when I get around to it.

I've had spa like facials over the years from time to time (the massaging in of various creams and what not) which I didn't find particularly beneficial. Of course I was probably in my 30;s!!! I started a retinal a couple years ago and see subtle but noticeable differences in my skin quality. I just had a series of 3 BBL (Broad Band Light) treatments (finished the second of 3 actually, one more to go) each of which is followed by dermabrasion. The first was pretty intense, hitting brown age spots and red capillaries. BEST investment in my skin ever. Sounds like it might be similar to what Lisap had done? it is laser, after the first one I was a bit swollen and red for a couple of days, but next to no reaction after the second. My tiny red lines are gone, brown spots flaked off, pores seriously minimized, and my skin is just all over smooth. I'm not sure what compelled me to do it (was just at the dermatologists getting my Retinal prescription renewed!) They recommend a touch up every six or 9 months, and I will definitely do that. the difference is dramatic. So not a facial, but exactly what my 50+ skin needed. I am a convert.

"Facial Rejuvenation
Facial Rejuvenation (also known as Photo-facial) is extremely beneficial and develops beautiful results! A flash of light is delivered to and throughout the skin which helps to minimize pores, reduce fine lines and wrinkles, tightens skin and boost the skins natural collagen. To obtain optimal results it is recommended to conduct a treatment every 2 weeks for 6 sessions.

The skin does change and nothing can last forever! Therefore a touch up session is recommended to do annually."

The salon also does a treatment on pigmentation using a higher frequency of IPL. I do it in the winter/spring months when I'm not exposed to sun as much. It evens out darker freckles and sun spots .

So many different responses! I had no idea what "photo" was, and am now quite curious. I had my first and only facial last year. It was pleasant, but I didn't see any lasting effects; at the time, I mistakenly thought my sibaceous filaments were blackheads and was obviously disappointed when they returned within days. While many women seem to swear by them, I have wondered whether the same effects could be produced at home with the right products. Of course, you'd still be missing out on the pampered experience, which I imagine is half the lure.

Regular appointments at an aesthetician for overhaul, but it is mostly for waxing (bikini, lip, chin, brow) and lash tinting. I'm obsessive about foot care and do my own pedis, but 2-3 times a year I let the 'pro' have a go. No mani's. I keep short nails due to piano so there is no point. Haven't had a facial in ages. Doesn't seem to last. I'm always in the shower though - due to daily workouts. Love Cerave (thanks YLF for the intro to this fab line). Regular massage, but it isn't the relaxation type - more deep tissue body work.

I'm not adverse to a day of beauty at a spa, but haven't had one in a while. Maybe for my 55th later this year?

I've only had a proper facial once, and it made my skin worse - like red and peeling and breaking out for several days afterwards, not just for an hour or two. I think that my skin is too sensitive for strong products, unfortunately. I'd love to find something that really worked for me, but most of the time any changes make my skin worse, not better.

no downtime at all - except for the ride home in the car when your hair is all wonky:) There is no peeling from a photo facial - just bare bits of pigment that flake off over the next few days. Like specks of pepper. I'm red for about a half hour - and even then it's not noticeable.

I recently had a facial for the first time in ages, recently. I enjoyed it, and looked great that day, but felt little long term impact (except that I really liked the Suki products I got samples of, especially the exfoliate.) I know some people swear by monthly facials to keep their skin in good shape.

I did a Fraxel / vBeam last year. It was like a three day recovery from looking all peely and puffy, but the overall good look of my skin went on for months after. So I will probably try it again if I feel like I can stay home for that time. Lisa, do you have that much down time?

photo facials use differing frequencies of laser to target pigmentation related to sun damage and age, and also is used to stimulate collagen production for firming and tightening. Best thing ever for me.

In my 30's and early 40's I had facials every 6 to 8 weeks, then the gal I wen to retired. This my 'me' time and considered it a necessity because it made me feel better about myself and the family liked me better. When my kids started having hormonal breakouts in their teens I took them. My daughter did not like them but my son did. I had my pores extracted, head and neck massaged, the European zapper thing (not sure what it is called) to keep inflammation at bay, and other stuff. It was a 1 1/2 to 2 hour process. My gal was from Spain and I think what she gave was more European style than American style. I have not found anyone like her since and have basically given up looking.

A luxury for me... but then so is healthcare. I always get yelled at by doctors and aestheticians, but I can't afford my own self. Hahaha!!

But seriously. Facials really do it for good skin. I do the steam clean thing. Haha. I don't know what they call it really. At home I like a Vitamin C wash, creams with copper and peptides, and am trying to try a retinol... But the smell bothers me. And Biore strips. I like those little things.

I used to get monthly facials for over 2 years until my favorite aesthetician left and they others did not even compare with her. At first I considered it a luxury, but after a few sessions it was definitely a necessity. My skin vastly improved after a few treatments, but I continued to go because it was so relaxing too. I am someone who does not like being massaged over my entire body by strange hands, but along with my facial they do a neck, shoulder, arms, and hands massaged which I loved.

I went to Hand and Stone for my facials and would get the Classic Facials, but after one summer I had a few glycolic acid peels (note that these are not medical spa strength) that truly brightened my skin and has stayed that way for over a year.

After I stopped going I kept up the regime myself by deep cleaning my face and using various masks and serums at home. I personally like the Mario Badescu line for masks, cleansers, and serums .

I should add that if you do nothing at home after your facials you probably won't notice the difference. But if you do exfoliate, use serums (I personally use a vitamin C serum a couple of times a week and a Hylauronic acid serum the rest of the time), moisturize, etc. you will definitely see a vast improvement in a couple of months. Any dark spots I had on my face have totally disappeared and I always get compliments on my skin.

Facials are definitely a luxury--but a delightful one.

On a regular basis, I rely on daily use of a sensitive skin Clarisonic brush, AHA exfoliant, a retinol serum, and a moisturizer/sunscreen with ceremides, hyaluronic acid, and niacinamide. I also use Paula's Choice Vit. C Booster which contains Vit. E and ferulic acid every evening mixed into my night cream.

My routine seems to work since my skin is in very good shape for my age, 66, and I have minimal wrinkling and sagging. The texture and color is good so I rarely wear foundation or much makeup--just eyebrow pencil, liner, mascara, and under eye illuminator, along with a swipe of sheer lip colour.
