Talbot’s has A line corduroy skirts, that denim A line skirt Angie posted, and a long swooshy wool skirt. I ended up with denim and corduroy skirts from them for winter.

Gigi, I've found it easier since last winter to find winter weight skirts in different colors (granted, typically burgundies, rusts and olives). Uniqlo and the independent boutiques I frequent especially. Tweedlike fabrics, heavier knits and corduroy... the advantage of the skirt winning some territory over the dress again, I guess :). So don't despair yet!
I'm with everyone. I only wear thinner skirts, like the ones Angie and Brooklyn shared, in winter for formal events :).

Brooklyn, how did I misread “skirt” as “shirt”? Even without my glasses on, I have no excuse, because the context clue of all the great skirts you post should’ve done it for me. I do love your skirts, and these look like they have great swoosh. But I think that’s due to the pleats/gathers, not to the weight of the fabrics. Heavier fabric can also “swoosh” quite well, imo. Case in point: my new midi. It has some swoosh, but I think the thinness of the fabric makes it hang more than it moves. This winter, I’ll make a point of commenting on which of my heavier-fabric skirts have good swoosh.

Brooklyn, I'm betting that the weight of skirt you are wearing for winter (sounds like medium weight?) is perfect for your milder winter climate! Maybe you feel like an outlier because the rest of us are living on the frozen tundra. You do have an amazing skirt collection, for sure! I especially like the one on the lower left.

FI, I post swooshy midi skirts all the time! The look I aspire to in winter is shown in the photos I posted up thread. Not achievable with a heavy weight wool, corduroy, tweed, denim, a knit, or a true cotton velvet (lighter weight viscose or poly versions excepted).

I’m not trying to be controversial, I’m just genuinely surprised to be an outlier. But to each her own and all that! If I lived in a super cold climate I would have a closet full of puffer coats to coordinate with my closet full of swooshy and seasonally confused midi skirts, lol

I’m surprised I’m the only one who likes the look of a swooshy skirt in winter! It’s pretty much my favourite look. I had no idea it was so “out there”, lol. But just to clarify, I don’t wear thin summer skirts in winter but I do have plenty of lined poly and viscose skirts (including some mesh/tulle ones) that I will happily wear in winter with layers. I wouldn’t describe them as “thin” but they are lighter weight than most wool skirts and definitely lighter weight than corduroy, velvet and denim skirts.

Wow, I didn't expect such a consensus! I'm glad I'm not the only one who can get frustrated trying to find something that fits the bill. It's funny...in winter I'd rather wear a knee-length denim skirt or even above-the-knee corduroy skirt with heavy tights rather than a thin poly skirt that reaches to my ankles!

I'll just have to keep my eye out for anything that looks like a heavy knit. But then, as Brooklyn said, I miss out on the "swoosh" factor. Sometimes I like some swoosh...depends on my mood.

Angie, I did enjoy my Anthro yellow velvet skirt last winter (we are skirt twins). That is a good one, since it is heavy but has swoosh.

Definitely crave heavier weights in winter -- even my current much-less-severe winter. That is one reason I wear fewer skirts and dresses in winter -- they are harder to find, and those that don't "stick" to tights even harder to locate!

I find ponte knit and neoprene midi skirts work well for me in the fall and winter months. Worn with opaque tights and tall low heeled or flat boots, they're a staple. I don't own any wool or corduroy skirts now, but I wish I did have at least one.

Yes to heavier skirts in Winter - cold, windy and wet here, but not very snowy and arctic. I wear these skirts WITH hosiery and a long coat. Long coats REALLY helps with warmth.

I get you. I rarely wear thinner skirts in winter; all I want to reach for is quilted, corduroy, or wool. I just made an 8-gore skirt out of navy corduroy. Even though it's fairly lightweight for corduroy (14 wale), it has plenty of body and warmth. I'm still shopping for some plaids.

I'm not in an extremely cold climate, but it definitely gets below freezing in winter. My pencil skirts can be worn all year, except in the bitter cold, and I have a midi tube skirt that's good for transitional to cold weather. But the thin flowy ones are strictly warm weather items. They cling to tights and just look wrong with coats.

I do wear non-wool skirts in winter, but admittedly my winter is not super cold. I will wear medium weight polyester or viscose skirts that are lined. Usually layered with undershorts and tights. I rely on the colour or pattern of the skirt (dark and moody) and layering with boots, knitwear, jacket/coat to convey a cool season look. Plus coverage. The less skin you show the more wintery it looks.

The problem with wool, besides it being hard to find generally, is that it’s hard to find in drapey styles, with swish. I have one wool skirt, shown in finds, that I really love but it’s definitely stiffer than some of my other skirts. I love the drape and movement of lighter fabrics.

Taking these 2 photos as examples: these dresses/skirts are probably poly or viscose, but they are layered in such a way that they look wintery to me. I would probably wear thicker tights and/or undershorts in the second outfit. (I would prefer the second skirt to be more opaque and longer.) But I really like the vibe of both outfits and I think it would be hard to achieve that look with wool or a heavy weight fabric.

That said, comfort is king. It’s important not to be cold!

I hear you. Lightweight fabrics like poly not only can look off in the winter, but they get all static-clingy, too when worn with thick tights. I like a good tweed. Whatever happened to great tweed in colors that aren't grey?

ooh, I love Joy's idea of pleated - plenty of visual weight there. I have the same psychological problem with skirt weight - only all year long. I get a nagging dissatisfaction with thinner skirts even when I reason with myself that the season is warm/hot.

I've always felt drawn to heavier fabrics in winter for my skirts--wool and velvet, mainly. The only problem is that a lot of wool skirts seem to be in gray, and I'm very tired of gray. I want some more exciting skirts for winter. But when I think about wearing a lighter-weight skirt, like a polyester skirt, with thick leggings under it, it just seems wrong from a visual standpoint. My eye wants to see the heavier fabric. It's kind of like wanting to see a creamy, more ivory color than optic white in the winter, if that makes sense.

For those of you who live or have lived in extremely cold climates, do you prefer heavier-weight fabrics for your skirts? Or do you not have a preference for fabric weight, instead relying on underlayers to keep you warm? In short, am I being too picky? Do I need to try lighter fabrics and let my eye adjust?
