Interesting. I guess it shows that price isn't always the indication of quality. I have seen boots with a description of a zipper when there is obviously not one in the pictures.

Thanks for the helpful suggestions Jenn and JAileen. I tried the light test using a known fiber content (silk vs poly) and it worked, I’m tempted to cut a few bits from an inner seam so I can try the burn test as well.

How I tell the difference between natural fiber and man made fiber: I take a tiny bit of fiber and burn it with a match. A natural fiber will turn to powdery ash. Man made fiber will turn into a hard little ball. I do this if I have yarn without a tag.

That's so frustrating! It's hard enough trying to gauge if something is going to work through photos and a description, even worse when those things can't be trusted!

I did a little googling to see if there was a way to tell silk from polyester and found this:

Genuine silk changes color when you tilt it, refracting the light as it passes through the prisms in the fiber. Move the cloth in front of a light source. If the shimmering is just a consistent white shine, it’s polyester. If the reflected light changes color, it’s probably silk.

Definitely going to try that with my silk because, assuming it works, that'd be a handy test to have in my toolbox for future reference.

This doesn't surprise me since Zappos is owned by Amazon. So much fake merchandise sold through these companies that I usually avoid buying clothing from these sites. Glad you caught it, Janet and a good heads up for all of us.

Staysfit, I wondered the same thing, whether there is some way to tell one from the other in a case where tags are not available or reliable. It wasn’t really obvious from the feel of the fabric, but it didn’t have a particularly luxurious silk feel to it.

Is there any way to distinguish silk from polyester without a label? I understand your plan to return the item, and would do the same, but I have sometimes been in resale shops where the clothing labels were cut out by the first owner, making it hard to tell exact fabric content.

Oh my gosh! How frustrating! I agree with your keeping the Paige - the design seems much better than the Joie, even if the fabric of the Joie were 100% silk, the Paige one seems like a better cut.

I don’t know. I’ve never heard of fakes being sold through Zappos. Amazon, yes, but not Zappos. It’s hard to know without seeing another sample of the blouse, and considering the style issues with it, I’m not inclined to order another one to compare.

Cat2, I also thought it was odd, as Joie is usually good quality, although they’re not always silk. It didn’t seem shabby or poorly made, just not right for me.

The experience did make me think I want to check content labels more carefully in the future.

I've worked for a garment manufacturer, and although it's rare, items can make it to retail with the wrong labels in them, and are not recalled from stores! It's too costly.

I have these jeans and LOVE THEM! The wrong photo is both on the Nordies and Frame website. The jeans are not ripped and torn - otherwise I would not have bought them. The photo was not corrected either. I bought them in stores so I could see that they weren't torn.

So, on my recent NAS post about the 7FAM jeans and black Paige blouse, I got a suggestion to check out a very similar blouse by Joie. It’s twice the price, but I decided to check it out because it was advertised on the Joie website as well as others that it is silk. I ordered it from Zappos (it was the last one left) and it arrived today. Stock pic below. https://www.zappos.com/p/asin/B07RCK8B6S

Well, the tag inside the so-called silk Joie blouse says 100% polyester! It’s no nicer than the Paige blouse — in fact, I much prefer the style of the Paige one because 1) there are buttons at the neckline and the neckline isn’t too deep or wide, while the Joie is quite wide AND deep at the neckline (contrary to what the photos below would lead you to believe!), 2) the back on the Paige has a nice separate yoke detail, while the Joie one has no yoke (just one piece of fabric in back) and is gathered at the back of the neck, a style I never like on myself, 3) the sleeves are slightly too short on the Joie, plus they are puffed at the shoulder, which pushes the style into more froufy than I like.

I’m sending back the fake silk Joie blouse and keeping the Paige one. I’ll have the hemline tailored and curved to the proper length and shape for me.

Lesson learned: don’t trust the fabric content printed on websites! Check the label when the piece arrives. I will sometimes buy polyester if it has a quality feel, but I want descriptions to be honest!
