Back for saying that I hear that Gordon Ramsay's PETRUS is great too. And also I bought a cubic meter of cherries and figs from the street vendors. ( In Camden and Portobello mostly ).

I know this is old but i just want to back uo Ottolenghi. Last time when i was in london i ate there 4 times in 6 days. It's just soo good. And imaginative and healthy . And the sweets are to die for. And they have almond meal and orange muffin.
Also I loved Pret-a-Manger. I loved the salads with de puy lentils and the crayfish salad. And the avocado sandwitch. And they have small snacks you can buy bananas , apples, small bites of choc . They're also eco friendly and they have a "everything fresh" policy ."made today gone today" so they don't feel the need to put preservatives in the food.
And my hubs who is a very "normal" eater loved both Ottolenghi and Pret-a-Manger tout.

I don't have any specific restaurants in mind, but there was a whole street of little cafés on one of the streets near the French Institute in South Kensington. It was like a bit of Paris that you can get to on the tube. The one I stopped in for a quick lunch was good and affordable.

I've been to this Ethiopian place a while ago and it was pretty good, and close to King's Cross.

Oooh - love that idea, Julie -- Covent Garden and Jamie Oliver at the same time. Perfection!

I don't think it is fine dining. The prices of the unfine dining will be high enough for us, alas! Our daughter's not with us this trip; it is the getaway trip (well, except that we will BOTH be working the whole time we are away...but I can still sneak out to shop and eat, right? Right.)

On a day when you are pushed for time you could try the 'of the moment' food chain Nando's http://www.nandos.co.uk it is like a cross between a canteen and a restaurant and bar put the peri peri chicken is always good and the atmosphere lively. DD will love this if she is travelling with you.

I also had a nice meal with colleagues at Jamie's Italian in Edinburgh, there are two in London I believe and are quite inexpensive considering the celebrity chef involved
http://www.jamieoliver.com/italian/ hint hint there is one in Covent Garden, you know, the shopping destination.

And yes, the Indian restaurants are always good, avoid the cream based dishes if you are looking for something a little more authentic.

If you are looking at fine dining, I could email my friend for a recommendation

Zap, the lattes for some reason taste better, I went to Milk Bar and Flat White.

Suz - if you can't get to Bath, all the more reason for annual trips :). I am fortunate that my main customer is there so I get to go almost yearly. So that's why I hardly post any new purchases (sadly, I always raid my shopping budget to go on another trip).

Sally Lunn Bun House - how I love that name. Sadly, there's no time for a Bath side trip, but I think I need to put that on some kind of list of things to do before it's too late.

I loved the high tea at here:

http://www.afternoontea.co.uk/.....8;Itemid=3

Also, I definitely agree with the suggestion for Indian food, you can't go wrong with the food there.

For quick food. I love the sandwiches from upper crust and the paella at covenant gardens.

If you drink coffee, I'm jealous because the coffee over there (if you like milk) tastes way better.

Also, eat a British breakfast, I love the bangers.

If you do end up doing a side trip to Bath - eat at the Sally Lunn Bunn House

I love London! It's horrendously expensive though!

Anne, you are cracking me up right now. I actually went to Paris on the same trip and went straight looking for a godforsaken McDonalds, just because my mom convinced me that I absolutely had to try the couscous in the menu... There was no couscous mother!
I swear, I was so upset.
I actually went to Paris looking for the weirdest food combo ever: That godforsaken couscous and Laduree macaroons. I had better luck on the second.
Can you guys tell I like food?

Bombay Brasserie is a lovely Indian restaurant in South Kensington or Chelsea ( I can't remember). Anyway, it is a very pretty restaurant with a glass atrium ceiling. We went for the lunch buffet and it was a great setting and wonderful food.
I'm so jealous of your trip - London is one of my favourite cities.

I went to London in college with my older brother and his annoying girlfriend. Neither of them were very adventurous travelers or eaters. We ate at this quaint little place called ... oh, let me think ... oh yes, MCDONALD'S.

Blech.

Don't eat there. :)

I haven't been and thus can't personally vouch, but this is a very famous chef who's got a cookbook out that I've looked through--his recipes look healthy and amazing:

http://www.ottolenghi.co.uk/

I've read from a food blogger that this place is also really good:

http://www.moro.co.uk/menu.php#

But I do agree with Angie; you have to try Indian food at least once or more. And some kind of high tea.

ETA: I swear, until just now I hadn't even noticed your comment above about the mediterranean food. Is that serendipitous or what? These are the two London restaurants I would be wanting to try whenever I get back there.

She's a big foodie and will be working out of her agency's London office for a week, I believe the same time that you'll be there. As a matter of fact, I should send her your packing posts, if you don't mind. I know they would be a huge help.

Primark ( or topshop) has a few stores with little cafes and they sell them. I OD'd on those darned waffles. It was a feat I came back with no extra weight. I ate my way thru Europe.
