Beautiful inspiration MG! Thanks! Length in the skirt is everything for me, I think.

Suz: I know that scale in prints is a big issue for me. I don't do little prints well -- I seem huge by comparison, but I thrive in large scale prints that would swamp a more delicate woman. I think I'm just wanting something besides sheath dresses (I got two last summer) and pencil skirts (which I still love, of course).

I think fit and flare dresses are wonderful on more, uh ... mature women. The current incarnation of "skater dresses" do look juvenile, but only because they are very short and made up in whimsical prints and colors. Think of the wildly flattering silhouettes from the 40s and 50s - those are fit and flare dresses.

http://www.google.com/search?q.....038;ei=-yt

Beth Ann, I think you could absolutely do the fit and flare and still look like an adult. Ensuring that the colours were YOUR best colours would certainly help. Maybe adding structure with a topper, although that's not always possible in the heat. Anyway, I am bumping for more advice.

I have a feeling that (as usual) your 40s and early 50s movie star looks might be inspirational. Instead of a light print, a rich solid?

Sally Field, that is, in the May Ladies Home Journal

http://www.lhj.com/style/covers/sally-field/

In her 60s, she manages to pull off a grown-up, but still soft and feminine wardrobe -- both in color and silhouette. Now, I realize she has "Hollywood Genes" and has had some good surgical help along the way, but it seems like she could dress straight out of the spring Boden catalog while looking great and completely age appropriate. Meanwhile, while I loved some of the items in their line, I feel I would look like Bette Davis in "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?"

http://www.bodenusa.com/en-US/.....g.html#nav

Now, I'm a larger scale person, with a stronger color palette and style, but I would love to carry off a fit and flare dress in addition to a great pencil skirt. What can I learn from Ms. Field to make this type of look work for me? Anyone else out there doing this well over 45?
