We had a family portrait done a couple years ago and they suggested dark colors to emphasize the person and not the clothes. They also suggested the colors "go" but not necessarily match. They especially like black, navy, forest green, and burgundy red. We wore medium to dark sweaters and jeans and the pictures turned out very nice.

Thanks! I'm liking the idea of giving the kids something to do, they are rotten during pics...

Hi, our family does the jeans and a white top theme - then everyone can pick what they like. It's fun to see the kids choices change over time, and it's a classic - however, the jewel tones idea also sounds really cool!

My photog suggested denim for its rich texture, so what Marin said resonates.
She also suggests possible outift changes for small kids and accessories like hats that can be removed. Both times we had photos I went with a starting point of a couple of family clothing items I was particularly fond of that worked together then threw them on the bed and played mix and match with other items. For example my two DDs had coordinating but not matching summer dresses in bright floral prints that included purple and orange. I had a purple dress and DH an orange polo plus rich blue jeans. The result was not matchy matchy but cohesive, and the colours really pop against the evening lake backdrop. The other time we all happened to have purple clothes (again not totally matchy, different patterns and textures), which turned out to work well against what was primarily a green backdrop (spring at the park). So consider your setting as well!
I love colour (obviously) and these bright photos printed on large canvas work with our home decor. B&W would not be the same. We get many compliments on then. An interior decorator I had in even suggested "pulling" the orange from one set to use again elsewhere in the house. So another factor to consider depending what you want to do with the photos.

Yes, I like Angie's idea and see it here at the beach where family wear denim jeans and everyone has a white top that varies (shirt, blouse, lace, etc.) and it seems to work and show continuity and variety at the same time.

Another idea would be khaki bottoms or skirt and black tees, polos or tops. That's another classic.

Have fun with it!

We did something along Rabbit's suggestion and the photos turned out great. We kept things fairly simple. Dark greys, a bit of cream, dark plum, and a muted magenta. What stood out to me was how well all the textures worked for us. So not planned. But we had corduroy, lace, ribbed tights, and heavy cotton flannel. Our photos were done in October in a wooded canyon and the fabrics just seemed at home. I also liked that DH and I had on outfits that played as a background to the kids. I wore a slightly fitted thin knit tunic sweater in super dark plum with dark jeans and boots. I could move around and not worry about how my clothes looked. DH had on a dark grey shirt with the faintest check/stripe and dark jeans. The muted magenta - brighter plum than my sweater my oldest wore with a dark grey skirt and tights. My youngest had on a cream top with lace, a grey cord jumper, and stripped tights.

Our photographer suggested having something for the kids (3.5 & 1.5 yo girls) to do - balloons, pinwheels, bubbles, etc. since kids are not always into having pictures taken. We borrowed a wagon from a friend which worked out great except, it was bright red. Not really in our color scheme. We got some great shots using the wagon but ended turning most to B/W.

My sister's family did the jewel tones look (per rabbit's suggestion) for some family photos and they look fab! Everyone wore a different color.

What about staying in the same color saturation family, but wearing different colors? Like all jewel tones, or all taupe/gray/heathered colors. That might make you look cohesive but avoid the matchiness.

I'm booking a family portrait at the end of May. Outdoor shots. It will be me and hubby, my 4 yr old boy, and my 3 yr old girl.

Any ideas on a good overall look to help us look stylish and cohesive while avoiding the "dorky family in a field wearing matching denim shirts" look?
