I have two pairs in current rotation. Plus a pair of sunglasses, and a pair of sport glasses for bicycling. I generally wear fashion frames for a couple of years, sometimes more, before I begin to feel they aren't as current feeling anymore. Right now I still have at least two pairs that I think I could wear, style-wise, but I just always wear the two most recent because I like them best.

I've often thought of refilling a pair of frames with a new prescription, but when it comes down to it, I have chosen not to.

Gretchen, thank you! YOU ARE SUPER CUTE. I love your freckles and pretty smile.

My two cents, and FWIW:

The burgundy colour looks the best. Wow on you. #3

There is room for improvement in the shapes. Not as flattering as it could be. The bottom outside corners of the frames droop down - and don't lift. Too square and wide. The brown - #1 - droops the least of the three pairs.

You might find this guide helpful:

I usually have a check-up with the ophtalmologist every 4-5 years. That's when I update the specs. I always have only one pair and I take care they suit my colouring and are either simple or retro. The latter seems to be more interesting stylewise. For the last 4-5 years I've had modern retro cat eyes and I'll be sorry to let them go (they are done), but I'm looking forward to choosing a new pair!

Great feedback - thank you!

Angie - at your request, I’ve uploaded pictures (my first time posting pics on the site!)

Kari - loved seeing your options. I think you and Roberta win for most pairs.

FashInterna and Rachlou - love the suggestions, and Ladypainter and CJh- I agree with asking the tech, or going for more cutting edge... I’m strongly tempted to get an outlandish color just because!

ChrisM - I hadn’t heard of frameless being aging. I had a pair w gold rims when I only needed them for driving, and loved the idea that they were more like jewelry.

Anchie, Staysfit, Astrid, Cardiff Girl and LisaP - thanks for your answers. I think we all have at least 1 extra pair somewhere.

Bijou - I wish I could do contacts, but I’m one of those people who can barely tolerate eye drops, much less touching my eye. You should see the shenanigans my optometrist goes thru to do an exam for me!

Wow, Angie, are the new red ones the same as your current dark brown frames? Can't wait to see them in action.
Specs are priecier than gold unfortunately:-((, but it is said specs wear out in 2 years anyway (the hardware) -and will probably need new prescriptions, too- but I always keep the older ones for backup.

I have six pairs right now, including one set of Transitions, and a packet of slip on/clip on shades. I need to get another pair of Transitions as mine feel a bit dated after four years. All of them tend to the same shape; rectangular with a bit of uplift at the temples, but vary widely in color. I think of them as face jewelry, and since I have to wear them most of the time, i want them to be as flattering as possible. They're not terribly fashion-forward, but then theyre not terribly expensive either. BTW, I wear progressives, and I buy them online for about $125 each.

Im boring with my specs, just replace as needed for rx, and in low contrast browns. But i only wear them for driving or other long distance. I also got prescription sunnies last time which i wear a lot.

I can't speak from my own experience, because I wear contacts, but I have a friend who wears glasses and considers them an integral part of her style. She has four pairs, three in very striking colors (pink, purple, and teal), all in the same unusual design, and then one pair that is very conservative with an almost-unnoticeable frame.

I would love to have at least one more pair in rotation , but insurance coverage here (for both DH and me) only allows replacements every second year, and for a relative pittance at that ($250). Because we have dual coverage now, we can get up to $500 each covered now, which will make buying new glasses a little more palatable. Progessive lenses are $$$ ! I'd love a pair of prescription sunglasses one day too. I wonder though if I'm overpaying for my frames...but I'm of course always drawn to the more interesting (and hence pricier) collections that opticians offer and don't go to the cheaper places that do the run-of-the -mill stuff. I currently have 2 pair of my prescription glasses (only wear one in public and they stay in my car for the most part) ,and then a plethora of cheap readers strewn all over the house

I’m a fan of having a lot of flexibility but prioritize quality over quantity. Because my prescription stabilized and my insurance helped subsidize it, I have four pairs plus one pair of sunglasses, collected slowly over a 7-year period, and I switch off regularly but not necessarily daily. It depends on what I’m in the mood for. I wear my chartreuse and bronze rectangular specs more sparingly as they are older, and the shorter frame isn’t always the best when I’m on a computer. My emerald plastic pair survived a chomp by my dog a couple years ago that required a lens replacement, and I love them. Currently I’m wearing my purple cat-eyes or teal titanium specs most often.

Hi Gretchen,
I have extreme myopia, and started wearing progressive lenses about 6 years ago for that midlife “short arms” problem.
I buy one set of frames for indoors, and one pair of Rx sunglasses.
Budget-wise, I NEVER compromise on lenses—I buy current-gen polycarbonate, *all* the special coatings (reflection, UV, scratch-resistance), pay extra for the lens grind with the smallest distortion zone around the lens edge, etc. That means I often use the same frame for one or more refills of my Rx, depending on how well the frames are holding up (I sleep in my glasses).
To get more style longevity from my frames, I try to go slightly cutting-edge design, so that by the time I’m ready to switch frames, they are mainstream. I used to like Face-a-Face brand frames when I was working, and had lots of disposable income. BTW, did you know that Luxottica owns almost all of the eyeglass brands on the market?
Something to think about: those mass-market chain opticians have an accuracy-variance tolerance of up to 10%. It may be worth your while to stick with the optician service offered by your optometrist or ophthalmologist’s office. I found this out the hard way—10% wrong is well over a diopter’s difference for my Rx, >:-(

I wear contact lenses because they are far more comfortable than glasses. I hate the feeling of glasses on my face - a sort of heaviness that I thoroughly dislike.

I do have glasses that are Tiffany frames with black on the outside and tiffany blue on the inside. They are lovely, but look best when I am wearing dressy black outfits. They look too sleek and sophisticated to work with casual summer outfits. When I wear glasses I have to dress around them. If contact lenses were not an option for me, I am sure I would have a large collection of glasses.

I wear glasses daily and usually have only one pair, keeping the old as a backup in case there's a problem with the pair I have right now. I usually look for a new pair every three to four years, depending on wear and how much I like the frames. I've also had just the lenses changed out a few times and kept the frames if I liked them. My current frames are about three years old now and I feel like looking for a new pair soon. But I like the ones I have right now very much, so I'll be glad to have them as backup.

I’ve had new glasses every two years for 30 years. I feel my best strategy is that I always ask the technician to help me pick something trendy. Some frames have been more favorite than others, but I remember receiving compliments on all my frames. I just got new ones a few weeks ago. Best part is I can see better, of course.

This time I splurged on two pairs! One is roundish, plastic, dark smoke blue around the eyes and red and black tortoise shell pattern on nose bridge and side pieces (sorry I don’t know the technical terms).

The second pair is a metal, modified cat eye shape, purples and blues and pinkish kind of marbled pattern. Very hard to describe. So the two pairs are very different in coloration and shape. I love them both.

I get new frames annually, and have replaced lenses once or twice only. Right now I have 2 pairs but im “meh” about them both. I’m pretty terrible about finding frames that appeal to me. And they can be expensive, so I wear them even if I’m not crazy about them.

My latest pair are “frameless” because I wanted something that disappeared on my face, mostly for when I sing in choir (contacts are not an option for me when I have to read - I use contacts only when I do stuff that doesn’t require detail vision.). Now that I have the frameless, I think they tend to look a little too granny for my taste, but I suck it up and wear them anyway.

Am following this discussion to understand what others do!

I’ve only been tempted by one pair of frames that I’ve owned, to replace the lenses. However, I did that for ten years or something! In recent years, I’ve been getting new frames every year for fun. I wear contacts most of the time, tho, and feel free to let whimsy take me.

The only glasses I wear are readers, but here’s my opinion anyway.

Now that your daily needs are covered, think about other types of glasses. I have noticed some people’s angst over dressy looks with glasses. Do you have that covered? What about prescription sunglasses? Idk what sports you engage in, but you might want to think about specialty glasses for that. It is possible to get swim goggles with prescription lenses. Or maybe you need shatterproof glasses with a strap, like basketball players wear, or something that won’t fog up in the snow... Just my two cents.

I’ve reached the stage where I have to wear glasses daily. Thanks to a great insurance plan, I can buy a new set of frames annually, or I can save $ and just update lenses.

I initially thought it would be fun to play with color and shape, but I’ve realized that I don’t tend to vary my glasses as I do other parts of my wardrobe. Right now I have 3 pair: navy, burgundy, and brown. The navy (the ones in my profile pic) are 4 years old but my favorite of all 3 pairs. I was thinking I would just update lenses this year, since 3 pair gives me an extra if one pair gets lost or damaged, but I also don’t want to be wearing outdated styles.

So, fellow four-eyes, how many pairs of glasses do you have, and how often do you buy new frames? Where do you look for glasses style inspiration?

EDITED - pictures added (no makeup or styling).
1. Brown
2. Navy w silver ear pieces
3. Burgundy
4. All 3 pair.
