Janet: hang in there. You likely need more of a selection and perhaps a bit of help from someone who knows both inventory and how the frames play with different facial features.

Also, I believe a skilled optical shop can add discrete nose pads to most frames as needed. It need not be a variable in initial selection. That may free you up.

All the best!

I quite like those on you. I think you’re heading in the right direction. We have similar coloring but I decided a few years ago that I needed several pairs to choose from daily. I have a “quieter” half-rimless pair, a pair of bolder burgundy ones, and a a pair of really big (for me) frames that are dramatic. These were all spendy because they are progressives since I need reading glasses too, but I decided to allocate funds each year to glasses and (sunglasses). Once I made the decision to add a new frame every year or two, I relaxed into the process and don’t stress quite so much over finding the perfect pair. After all, what clothes I wear daily shifts depending on my mood or activity. Why wouldn’t I want to change out my glasses too?

I went more for glasses as jewelry this time. Metallic frames that pick up a lighter tone in my hair. They may not be as distinctive as my solid color frames, but I like the lighter look.

I have a narrow face and close-together eyes, and have a hard time finding frames that work. I always ask to look at petite frames (not necessarily subtle frames, just narrow in width, both at the bridge and the lens-holding part) and can usually find some I like.

I wanted to suggest these to you: https://www.amazon.com/2-5mm-1.....ds=non%2Bs. I wear plastic frames and use these and they work great! Since they're so inexpensive maybe you could buy some before you go back out shopping so that you can stick them on while trying on a frame in the store and see if you are OK with the look. I can't say they're totally invisible, but they are definitely inconspicuous and I never notice them when I'm looking in the mirror or at a picture of myself.

I shop for eyeglass frames continually...because I am so darn picky. When I find what I like, I buy, and not one minute before. Unless my only pair break, which happened about 6 years ago. I had known what I wanted ahead of time, but alas, nothing like it was around. So, instead, I bought 3 pair of frames, in my dominant colors, to take the place of one pair. This has worked out way better than I ever thought and enjoy my glasses more now. I think all the ideas about venturing to DC and other places is a good idea. Also, if you find high quality sunglasses that you like, your optician should be able to put your lens in them. Just one idea....Good Luck!

Janet, if you come into DC to shop for frames, try Blink Optical. They have a shop downtown on 18th, and a newer shop in SW down by the waterfront. Blink has great inventory; lots of stuff I had never seen anywhere else. I hate shopping for glasses, but Blink made it easy. Downside, it's pretty spendy.

You're right, Jenava. There are some traits I can tell won't work for me before I even pick up a style. There was an interesting pair but they had such a wide, high bridge, I knew they wouldn't work for me. I have a narrow bridge. And since my face isn't really narrow, just small all over, some styles that are not wide across the face have lenses that are just too deep/long that end way down on my cheeks, so my eyes are up in the top of the frame, which looks totally silly.

I think the tortoiseshell and horn styles I had most recently helped mask some of these issues a little bit, but I'm ready for a change from that look, and my husband doesn't love those either.

I'm also acutely aware that my eyes are really starting to show my age. So many lines and wrinkles, sigh. I feel like the glasses just draw a big frame around that.

I have a narrow face like Firecracker, too, and a smallish head, so I feel your pain! I have learned a couple things. I look for frames the go up as perpendicular as possible from the bridge and have a narrow bridge, for example, because I know that is the shape of my ocular bone and more sweeping curve there is going to cut across my brow oddly. I vote keep looking, note that things about the pairs that are passable that you like and dislike and use that to help you narrow your search. It's worth it to find the perfect pair...(or two, right?. I mean, when you're hard to fit and you find more than one pair you might as well go for it.) I have faith you'll eventually find the unicorn.

There was a line of "petite" frames at the shop, which fit me better sisewise, but weren't really to my liking stylewise. I wouldn't rule out children's frames if they were suitably sophisticated. I don't want to go quirky/twee/cute at all.

As much as most frames are too big and overwhelming on me, there is also a fine balance: if the frames and lenses are too small (the very narrow ones like readers, with the profile like Chris shows), they barely seem to cover my eyes and look all wrong too. I don't need readers yet (oddly enough -- it seems I'm the last of my friends to need them!), so the only other eyeglass needs I have for reference are sunglasses. You can get away with so much more drama in sunglasses because the eyes are not really visible behind them! Hehe, I'm goldilocks when it comes to glasses...

$800+ ?! Yikes! Insurance should pay at least some of that-if you choose frames on their rack...
Ditto about checking children's frames for size. I need small ones too, and have checked them, along with the other ones the optometrist said were smaller. Also, if there are frames you like for reading glasses or non rx sunglasses, maybe they could use those instead.

I'm definitely going to continue the search. This was sort of a pre-shop, just to see what looks new, and put a few things on. I had pretty much no makeup on, lighting was bad, I had stuff on my shoulder so I wasn't really working an angle for a photo, etc. It was a discouraging visit. Maybe next time/place will be better.

Specs shopping is a b$@&# (sorry, Angie). I got supremely lucky 2 years ago with my mauve and lime cats eyes - the heavens opened and the angel's sang when I tried them on, and I just stopped looking any further.

Previous pairs have often been, JFE - and frankly that's a shame when you pay $800 and have them on your face 365 days a year!

I do like the ones you're auditioning, but why not keep the info on the frames for now, and keep looking?

I have no idea whether this would be helpful to you (or going in the entirely wrong direction) but have you looked into Asian fit/alternative fit/low-bridge fit glasses? They typically have larger nose pads and other differences in fit.

My vote is to keep looking!!! I have finally found an optician that is REALLY customer focused and very eager to help me find the right pair. I have my heart set on a squarish pair of tortoiseshell frames but also have a shallow bridge so rely on nose pads and thought I wouldn't be able to find what I wanted. But when I spoke with my optician about this he was adamant that I shouldn't rule out plastic frames, and he found me a few pairs that were real contenders and did sit well on my face.

I need to go back with a friend for a second opinion but he even offered to let me "rent" non-prescription frames to take home and try them out for friends and family (by putting down a small deposit that could be refunded or applied to future purchases).

So if you've got a few more optical shops you could check out, I recommend widening your search until you're really happy with your options.

I feel your pain,l HATE shopping for glasses.l wear them everyday so again ,like you want something cool but not overwhelming but I have yet to find them.My favourite pair are frameless ones that “blend”into my face and look as unobtrusive as it’s possible for specs to look.I did toy with a more trendy pair but I never wear them.Good luck!

Do you remember the eye scene in A Clockwork Orange? That was one of the creepiest things I ever saw. Nonetheless I bit the bullet and got Lasik maybe 8-10 years ago and have no regrets.
Anyway, you look great in the picture but I have no further advice as I have been out of the glasses game for a while.
