my thrifting addiction. Both of these seem to feed my purging
addiction, lol! I'm a mess.
"

heh. I do all the same things but find it absorbing. My husband laughs and calls it remanufacturing to my specifications. Mostly, I tend to like things lots better after I do.

I'll add that I find it dismaying how many reputable manufacturers do not clean finish their seams and leave them to ravel inside.

Rae, is the reason you're removing the lining because of its own non-breathability? I'd go ahead and remove the lining and try on the coat without it and see what's what with how it hangs and drapes. If you need it, you could probably get a seamstress to sew you a new one using the old lining as pattern. I know this ups the cost if you're not DIYing it.

I have one question about the waterproofing. Wouldn't linen be continually wrinkling? Is this the look you're going for? Because if not what does the product say about what happens if you press it? Linen needs a very hot iron and usually dampening!

Winnie Magee, in Northern Ireland, has been making lovely linen raincoats. Don't know how she is waterproofing the linen but I have one of them and it is a very nice coat. Since it is not waxed, I am assuming it has been sprayed with something.

Ah, I see. Unfortunately, I've found that breathability and waterproofness are inversely correlated.

I have a thing with poly linings. If I'm out walking around at all I can't stand it... doesn't breathe enough for me. :T This is what started me off on a hunt for a better raincoat in the first place. Harder than I would have thought!

Why do you need to remove the lining? Most lining-like polyester is pretty tightly woven and close to waterproof anyway, and its the inner layer anyway. Why not give it a go with the lining intact?

Oh yeah, the driving mocs I "painted" started cracking and showed the orange underneath. Oh well, they got me through winter anyway and the alternative would have been to consign them for a few bucks.

Only one pair of shoes and a bag are left (everything that was "altered at midnight" a la Mo is gone too). I think I have a strange destructive addiction to DIY that is similar to my thrifting addiction. Both of these seem to feed my purging addiction, lol! I'm a mess.

Well, the waterproofer I use does NOT hamper breathability. I've used it before on cotton, and it's great!

But Claire, that is SO interesting that you have purged a lot of DIYs! I have, too! I think the only ones I reallllly really love are my ombre bag and bronzed booties. So weird!

You caught me after culling *most* of my fun, experimental and cheap DIYs, so I'm going to side with the others on this. I cut the lining out a a linen blazer last year and boy, that was a mistake! The seams were not finished and it shed like CRAZY in the sleeves and the little threads stuck to everything. And it lost it's shape. And it never quite looked right around the collar where I had to cut it a little to get the lining out. I need to stop buying things with the idea of DIY. It's one thing if the item is in the donation bag, but for new items, I'm saving up and holding out for what I really want. Sometimes good is the enemy of the best.

Mm, you are all probably right. The final drape and movement is a huge question mark that could lead to a total waste. Me and my harebrained schemes! Zap you are right that PPP should apply to all price points.

Nope Rae, the idea is to find the perfect trench now. You have experimented with dyeing and DIY already. I am biased because my motto for 2013 is no more wasting money on almosts. I am going to use the same pickiness at all price points.

I think the biggest gamble is not in trying to waterproof it with the spray. It's trying to remove the lining without messing with the integrity of the piece.

I like the idea! Will it creaze more when you remove the lining? And will it keep its shape? That would be my concerns. I think trenches are made for rugged weather.

Came across linen trenches somewhere or another and the idea intrigues me. Lightweight, breathable... and according to my waterproofing spray and various internet sites, able to be waterproofed like other natural fibers. I found a linen trench in a pretty gray. Is it stupid to gamble $$ to remove the polyester lining and waterproof one to see how it goes? Under $40, but still, that's $40 that could go toward something else. Would it look silly to be wearing linen in the rain? In F/W?

ETA: This would NOT be in place of the Nau or other great, gear-quality trench. Just an experiment for someone who loves the classic/miltant vibe of trench coats but needs more breathability and less warmth than most offer.
