Yes, Pil makes a good point about what libraries can take for their own collections - they need to be able to justify the shelf space, processing costs and consider their collection development strategies. If they have a sale, like Runcarla was talking about they may be more free to accept items, though even then, they'd want it to be saleable!

For what it’s worth, the library where I work does not take text books or instructional manuals. Sometimes it’s a bit of a surprise what some people think are donatable materials - think mold and cigarette smoke.

For those who have or inherit a bunch of religious books, many church's have libraries and could use any you want to pass along.

Thank you, Carla, for this reminder. I buy lots of children's books at our library a used store to have for grandchildren, and would buy DVD's if they were allowed to see them. We culled hundreds of books when we downsized. What many places will not take...cook books.

Thank you for sharing the good ideas. I will check if my library accepts book donations as it previously did not. Otherwise I can ask at different libraries.
Good job on your donations.

We have a tiny library, but lots of people who love this library. We have a book sale twice a year so I have made many donations of books, dvds, VHS tapes, etc. A few years back I found a 1st edition Winnie the Pooh there that I paid $1.00 (did not realize it was a 1st edition until I got it home). The library also holds a Renaissance Fair each Sept which began on library grounds, but became so popular they had to move it down the street where there is more room. For a tiny 1 room library they hold many events for toddlers, school aged kids, adults, and older adults. Our library cannot rely solely on state funding so we have to do everything we can to keep it going.

I'm not currently culling books, having done a big edit before relocating 4 years ago, and a mini cull (mostly DH's work library) 6 months ago, but I wanted to point out that libraries will often accept books of all sorts. Good quality hard cover books get integrated into their collections, and other books get sold during fundraiser book sales. Our seniors center also has a wall of shelves and books (mostly paperback) for 'take one/leave one' and some clubs will absorb books (my quilting group took all my books AND magazine collection on the subject. They also took my excess fabric stash for community quilt making projects.)

If you are doing a household edit, and books are up for review, consider a donation to your local library.
