For odor removal, I like to do a long soak (several hours) in warm water with a scoop or two of oxyclean. Good for a lot of stains too.

I like your ruminations. I still wear some 15 year old compression shorts that fit me 20 lbs heavier than now. I really need to upgrade, but my indoor exercise is a 32 year old stair stepper in the guest room.

You are in a virtuous circle, where you are getting positive reinforcement from your body for all you past hard work. Very inspirational.

I love Athleta because they offer quality gear across a range of sizes plus and petite!). I’ve recently been gearing up my DD, and have tossed a few items in to her orders. I’m probably lucky they don’t have a B&M store near me.

And we finally got some snow so I got to wear my fab Evel Knievel XC ski pants yesterday. I haven’t Nordic skied in weeks, and boy did it help my psyche.

Thanks, Staysfit. I agree with bright colors on the road. It’s a very important safety tip. My cycling gear includes many bright tops and jackets and reflective pieces. This capsule is for gym and trail running. I have fantastic access to a park trail system a 2min drive from home (I am so very lucky!) and rarely road run. When I do, I have a safety vest I use. Better safe than sorry.

I always cold water wash and hang dry my gear and get 10+ years out of most pieces. adding vinegar is a fantastic tip.

Athletic gear lasts a long long time when it is properly cared for. Now that you have invested in these beautiful items, I suggest washing in cold water, and hanging them dry. To help with odor, add vinegar to the wash cycle. Like Runcarla says, a single pair of gear pants will last for 250+ wears.

My personal preference in athletic apparel is to purchase neon colors that I might not otherwise purchase in my typical wardrobe. I run on local roads, and have a road bike. I want to be visible. Very visible. I don’t want to blend in when I exercise. It isn’t the time for fashion, it’s the time for safety and practicality. A neon shirt could save my life. Too many people I know have been hit by cars.

Sterling, that makes sense. One still needs those fitness jackets, though, just fewer of them.

Sara L, whatever we do that helps us be motivated to move our bodies is helpful! I'm enjoying how I feel in my new capsule, too.

Suz, you are right on. I haven't seen it addressed well anywhere and it can be a big limiter in sport and other aspects of our lives.

The biggest challenge that I've had isn't the exercise or the weight loss, but dealing with the inner demons of identity. I didn't 'notice' those demon voices last year because they have always been my constant companion. This year I've started to see a disconnect between my mind set and my abilities, and how others including my husband saw me. I just never believed him or others. Recently, I have had several people that I've gotten to know in the gym come up to me and say lovely things like "you inspire me" or "you're badass" (after seeing me complete a pull up). Working on these identity issues has helped me ask others, such as to spot me on my bench press, or to ask questions of someone who regularly completes half ironman triathlons. It's a work in progress.

I have also always done my exercise alone, with my husband, or one close friend and avoided group exercise like the plague. But after attending some group classes in the past two months and being a guest on a friend's walking clinic, I am increasingly seeing the value in exercising with others. I also see the value in declaring one's goals to a wide audience.

[Ok, really veered off the style aspects of this capsule. Sorry about that. But perhaps these ruminations might help even just one person.]

Fantastic.

Identity is key to maintenance.

If we say, "I am an active person," or "I am an athlete," we're more likely to continue with the habits that have contributed to weight loss.

It's not foolproof but it is a piece that I think is missing from some weight loss programs/ regimes

If you wear the same black Lycra bottoms once per week for 5 years that would be 250 wears! I don't think that is uncommon for folks who exercise. Other than a favourite pair of jeans, I don't know of any garment that has the potential to be worn as much.

Robin F, Thistle, thank you. I struggled with spending money on those items, too. But I recently realized that I wore them SO frequently, my cost per wear was substantially less than any of my work wear clothes! And they are such a confidence booster and I feel more like an athlete in them! I had realized that good fitting clothes was helpful mentally for work, but I hadn't appreciated the same thing for exercise. That said, it's still a small set of clothes and thus requires washing twice a week.

La Pedestrienne, I can appreciate that! I'm finding the new clothing and watch very motivating.

Windchime, thanks! I have been weight focused for 11 months and it's nice to turn my focus towards what I can accomplish with my lighter body.

Jessikams, thanks for sharing! What a great idea to have a focused palette for an exercise capsule. Right now, I'm varying the bottoms in dark but colorful warm tones and am keeping the tops black. Good point that having great exercise clothing is motivating to exercise.

Sterling, thanks for your support! It is unlikely that your exercise clothes were too tight. The stretch in these materials make them robust across a wide weight range. My exercise clothes have fit over a wide range of weights, which is why I ignored them until now. I can still wear the top that I started to exercise in, 60+ lbs ago (I don't, though, except for updating my progress pictures).

Thanks, Kathie!.

Acknowledging that I am an athlete has been a very big step for me this year. I am generally disparaging of my sports ability and usually feel incompetent and uncoordinated. One of my 2018 resolutions is to redefine what 'athlete' is in my head. I workout 6 days a week, often 2 sessions a day. I may not be winning anything, but I am definitely living an athletic lifestyle. Surprisingly, this has taken me a very LONG time to appreciate. In my head I am still 60+ heavier.

As always, this post is so inspirational to me.

Three statements stand out:
(1) This refresh is your reward for 11 months of consistent exercise and training. YAY you.
(2) Your acknowledgment you are an athlete that deserves high quality gear. I bow to you.
(3) Your goal to focus on your athletic accomplishments, rather than weight. I'm coming along for the journey.

Right now, my athletic capsule mostly fits me. I think that means it was probably a little bit too tight to start with. Something I don't allow myself to think about.

Bravo! I always had such hatred for Gym class in school, and I think part of it stemmed from embarrassment over my my weird-looking hand-me-down gear (my family couldn’t afford sneakers etc). So part of helping myself to love exercise as an adult has been buying a coordinated set of gear. I stick to a palette so old stuff can get thrown out and new stuff can cycle in as needed.

Exercise is a large part of my life and I have an extensive cycling wardrobe that I've built up over 20+ years. Because these items are expensive, I had (very fortunately) stored my too tight cycling clothes and I've brought them out of storage when I lost weight. So I've not updated this section yet, though I have discarded too big pieces that were worn out.

In contrast, my gym wardrobe was limited and subpar. I had been strength training three days a week and I've been making do with target tights and a tee-shirt that I just washed over and over again. However, In January I added running to my activity list. In the past 6 weeks, I have completely refreshed (is that the word when you really had nothing much to start with?) my gym and run capsule with some fun purchases from Lululemon, Athleta and Arc'teryx. Due to stretch, these pieces will still fit me with additional weight loss. I consider this my reward for 11 months of consistent exercise and training. More than that, building this capsule was my acknowledgment to myself that I was an athlete that deserved high quality gear. I also bought a really cool multi-sport watch and HR monitor. My aim for the rest of 2018 is to focus on my athletic accomplishments, rather than my weight. I am psyching myself up to register for a variety of events, including 5k, 10k, and a sprint triathlon.

I added two capris, one tank, one short-sleeve, one long-sleeve, and a Lululemon jacket. For apres-exercise, I also got a long-sleeve shirt from Lululemon in forest green (it's super soft!). The long-sleeve Arc'teryx top will also work in my cycling capsule.
