I guess it’s medium contrast for me.</p> <p>Synne, for a sitcom I’ve never seen, I’ve read an awful lot about that one, because it constantly pops up as an example of the shows that are set in very cosmopolitan places, most often New York, that either ignore non-white characters or use them as foils, so that things like being so embarrassed that literally all your friends are white that you beg people you scarcely know to pose as your friend in a picture, or getting a food vender deported, or other ugliness become gags, ways for the nebbish to shrug off their “cluelessness” with a chuckle, belittling problems they create for other people. Sex in the City is another one that comes up frequently for its centering of whiteness in a city famous for its many cultures and colors. But I gather neither Eileen nor any of those women are timid/ineffectual/nebbish and it is true that life in the USA is very segregated—that’s what the “i have a Black friend” joke relies on. I should watch them sometime as research, but celebrating that flaw (which exists here too, to be clear) isn’t appealing. Here as in Tampa, people act like 70 is chilly and they bring out the warm fall clothes (well, in Tampa they thinks that’s deep winter). But I’ve lived other places that have the “hang onto summer” vibe and wear warm-weather clothing as long as they can. The DC end of the trip is easy, because it will be undisputedly warm. But further north, when temps are on that cusp, idk what people wear. </p> <p>Jenn, good thing the boxy works, because blazers r not me. </p> <p>Sally, the shoes were stiff when I first got them. When Bijoux commented it recently, the skirt I was wearing was indeed from J Petermann, the company Eileen worked for on the show. You are on the nose about white sandals—they are the other shoes I considered wearing today, but then I decided it wasn’t quite that warm. If I take the dress on our trip, I probably won’t have those sandals &amp; will have to choose between these shoes and my red clog sandals. </p> <p>I’m trying to work out now which length skirts/dresses work best with the shoes. Next up will be the above-the-knee navy JP skirt. The question there will be whether I need tights or not. Same with the desigual dress, if I take it. The weather will almost certainly be too warm to wear it as I am in the find.
