Strangely enough the only pets I have ever had are goats, chickens and guinea pigs. I think I am more a dog person, but I'd honestly love to have either at this point. Unfortunately when renting an apartment that's not easy!! My ultimate dream would be a backyard big enough for me to have a goat, a pot-bellied pig and some chickens. One day hopefully!!! And things that aren't toys. String, nail polish (?), energy drink containers, underwear (yes, underwear), etc. The funniest toys are their mice. I do a mouse check every few days. We have one mouse that no longer has any ears, eyes, nose, or hands and feet. I found the nose on the office floor the other day. ANYway, I could post here all day. Sorry! Our little man Jasper is such a funny little guy. He will wake up alone and start crying and crying until I go get him and bring him in with the rest of the group. When my mom goes to India to see her family, she always brings back gifts for everyone--including Lucie. Our house is littered with cat toys. I have bought SO many toy fishies for her because she keeps losing them. Then just yesterday I discovered THREE of them hiding in various locations and now I have more fishies than I know what to do with. I LOVE BEING A CAT LADY. I would not have it any other way! The kicker is that my husband left with my car keys in his pocket, and I walked (in 100+ degree heat) several miles to the pet store to get more kitten formula. You know that you live in a small town when buses don't run on Sundays. My cat also taught me that the best place to sleep is next to someone you love- even if you're a cat and that "person" is a dog. Molly came to us malnourished and dehydrated, yet VERY pregnant. She was not even a year old herself. She had four babies and it just makes me so sad that she was so hungry and thirsty for at least half of her little pregnancy. But all is well now, and she is loved like none other. :) I spend most of my day cleaning up after them and getting in sufficient play time with them, but I wouldnt' have it any other way. One was a cat that I brought home from college and my parents ended up inheriting it. The second cat was one I left with them when I lived overseas for two years. They wouldn't give her up when the two years were done. My father LOVED that cat! He used to stretch out on the couch at night to watch tv and she would sit on his belly and watch along with him. They ended up having that cat for 12 years! Unfortunately, I can't have any more cats. My teenage son developed allergies when he was younger. My brother brought home a kitten when he was little, but my parents made him give it back. They feel so bad about it now! It's funny--both of them were very reluctant to adopt my kitty (who ended up being the best birthday present ever), and they insisted she was MY cat and MY responsibility and they wouldn't have anything to do with her. However, in order to adopt her before someone else did, they had to take her home while I was still away in Brooklyn, so for those few months until i got home, my dad took care of her. And now? He and my mom are completely attached to her. They buy her toys, feed her, cuddle her, and try to guilt me out of taking her with me when I move out ("you know, she has gotten used to having such a nice big house and she won't be happy in a tiny apartment"). And your lesson: So true! I love it when Luci mis-pounces on her fishy toy and then just casually walks away as if it was all intentional. She gets horribly embarrassed when I catch her emerging from the litterbox though... I got her from a neighbor when I was four years old on a rainy day and I still remember carrying her home tucked under my raincoat. I wish I had a picture of her to show you. One of my cats taught me that no matter how cute you are naturally, if you don't take care to keep up with your grooming you can turn ugly real fast! We inherited a feral/stray cat colony with our house and I have loved every single one of those cats as they came and went. We are down to our own two cats now and an occasional visitor or two.
