I think they're all salvageable, but only if you want them. The first would be a great kicking-around-the-house dress if you didn't iron it. The second is lovely--it would go easily with sheer black tights, or white tights and unexpected shoes--Uggs or men's black dress shoes. The last top just seems super cute and flexible.

Just catching up and I think you've made the right choice; you know what works for you and your instincts were speaking clearly ... Although they all looked great to my eye, that's useless if they don't work for your preferences and life! So well done being picky and wise in your decision *applause*

I didn't get a chance to weigh in before you made your decisions, but I think you did right in trusting your gut, even though that black dress looks amazing, the traits you mentioned would drive me crazy, too. The great thing about returns, though, is that it frees up that budget and closet space to try more interesting things, so I can't wait to see the next round!

I see all your points! It is a cool dress once I stop thinking of it as "pretty eyelet" but it sounds seasonally confused. I hate that. Maybe it's an LA dress or something... not for northeast/midwest seasons.

You deserve to be fussy. It can be tough ordering online, especially when the colour is not like the stock photo, I was expecting a rich chestnut colour on the Breton top and can see why you are sending it back. I'm glad the 'no return' items worked out so well.

All of your reasons make sense, and thanks for sharing your pics and thoughts. It's just as helpful to see why things don't work as why they do.

I was attracted to the striped dress, too, but your feeling of circus tent (LOL) rang a bell with me. I didn't try it on, but I so wanted the back part of the dress to be less huge or the front part to be roomier. To me it seems a difficult design to wear.

I think your post-swim hair looks fab, btw.

Return underway. Planning to use the store credits to try jeans and/or linen coord. :)

The black dress is so unusual! If the fabric were more comfortable, I'd keep it. Definitely not summer weight, and I'm very heat tolerant and run cold. It's not a cotton eyelet, but a sort of heavy poly lace/mesh, if that makes sense? Added the close-up stock photo to show the texture. It reminds me of the sort of synthetics you find in vintage dresses from the 70s/80s: a little stretchy, very sturdy! It has a built-in slip dress underneath; the layered look is definitely part of the appeal but makes it that much warmer. The texture is indeed more RATE/punk than pretty, which is what caught my eye, but I can't picture it as a casual dress due to the fabrication. I think it could work with textured sheer black tights, like UmmLila suggests, for a pattern mix, but you'd lose some of the layered effect...

The thing with the shirt dress is that, for me, it just has too many "interest" elements. I could do the pattern, the volume, or the big collar/sleeves, but not all three together. It just feels like too much for my minimalist self. And I agree with Angie that it's too short, especially for the volume. Proportions are off. It's the same length on me, or shorter, than it is on the model -- and I'm only 5'4". I expected it to hit below my knees for sure!

It's tempting to keep the breton (which, yes, is rugby stripe rather than mariner stripe, part of the appeal for me), but I think the cut of Everlane's bretons just isn't quite what I need. This isn't the first time I've tried one, and I keep sending them back. It doesn't quite work as a standalone top, but the fabric is a little too thick and it's cut just a bit too wide all over, especially the sleeves, to work as a layering top. If the brown skewed more red and less yellow, I'd be tempted to keep it anyway, but it's a little more than I want to spend on a cotton top so it would have to be perfect!

That’s a shame. In the photos I like the eyelet dress- but I think it’s a spring/ summer/ early fall piece and if the fabric does not line up then I would pass.

I think - in general - it has to be a hell yes!

What Val said re the Breton top -- unfortunately!

I feel the same about the striped dress. I love those stripes in theory, as well, and then in real life always feel odd in them. Like mattress ticking. But in this case, I actually think the stripes look good on you -- it is more the shape of the dress that is the problem. Oversize but not in the right way.

It is harder to tell about the black dress, but if it is itchy and uncomfortable, I'd say that is a no. Cotton eyelet will stick to tights and won't keep you warm anyway.

I hope you can maybe try some of the other items you had your eye on!

I love the striped dress on you! But, I am biased because I love both stripes and volume. I do see that it’s more oversized than your usual. I’m lazy about ironing but I think if you hung this to dry, then maybe put it in the dryer for a few minutes with a wet load, it might be just fine.
The eyelet dress to be honest is looking more RATE than pretty to me somehow. I love eyelet typically but this pattern isn’t as pretty as I want it to be.
The striped tee is more of a rugby stripe than breton to me. I really like the colour combo but it’s low contrast for stripes, so I’d probably be happiest styling it under a blazer or jacket, as part of an ‘outfit’ of some degree of effort rather than as a standalone top. So I’m wondering if you’re feeling that it’s not quite interesting enough on its own?

I like the black dress! Gorgeous on you! Too bad it's a bit itchy. It's 100% a Summer dress though, and a casual one. I suspect the itch is making you feel hot! Eyelet fabric does not work in colder weather with tights. You will feel cold - trust me ;)

I've had that first striped dress on some clients, and it hasn't worked out. Too short and lacking the right shapeless shape, IYKWIM.

Here are the Everlane pieces I ordered recently. I also added a couple of basics (sports bra and hoodie) that are definite keepers. These three I’m on the fence about but leaning towards returning so I took some quick try-on pics. Thoughts? Thanks!

1-2 — Shirt dress. Super breezy and lightweight, but feels like it’ll demand ironing, which I know I won’t do. Collar and sleeves both feel a bit overwhelming on me. Also, as much I love vertical stripes in theory, in practice they make me feel like I’m wearing a circus tent. I seem to need to go through this every few summers to remind myself. :D

3 — Eyelet dress. Very weighty material!! Too hot for summer, but I’m not sure it’ll look as good with tights… Fabric is a bit itchy too. It fits, but I feel it lacks spark. In terms of occasion wear, I feel like I have other options I’d reach for over this…

4 — Breton top. A little bored by this one? The brown is not as reddish IRL as in the stock photos . Would prefer it a bit boxier/more oversized — could maybe try a size up but not sure I’m excited enough to bother.

Apologies for messy post-swim high-humidity hair!
