Oh oh oh oh! Budding personality assessments nerd here! :)

I've taken the DISC test once as part of routine HR procedure for new employees in my former job. They reported natural working style and the working style under stress. I found them fairly accurate, but it was not until much much later that I discovered how accurate they are.

My natural style is D and I. Very high D apparently, which was an absolute HUGE surprise for me.
My style under stress is C and I.

Well, elp, I'm sorry to be the one to break it to you... but since D and C are antithetical... obviously you're schiz... and thus a brilliant artist. Have you considered taking up the beret?

Anybody else keep thinking of Discworld everytime they see DISC? Terry Pratchett is brilliant. He must be D comma C

I was curious, so pulled out my old report. Mine was D dominant with a fair bit of C thrown it. Typecast as 'Creative'. How do you make the leap from D+C = Creative?

Hehe. I just took an online version. Results: D then S, I and C equal

I enjoyed it. I also like to read horoscopes. I don't mind being typecast. Categorisation is fundamental to thought.

I think it reflects my social strategy: I'm direct, I roll the dice, I practise patience and willingness to do my duty.

I'm not sure what use this is, in terms of making decisions in the abstract. I mean, would I ever send to HR saying, get me an I-type accountant? I hardly think so. Lol.

... oh but man, I'm sure there's a company out there that's trying that right now. Did you hear? Google has recently discovered it's hiring strategy (tech ivy graduates only, thank you) has not resulted in the hiring of creative innovators. No S Sherlock. Dude, you want the drop outs who are biting at your heels! Hahaha.

I have been a facilitator for both MBTI and DISC. In my opinion the value comes when the test results provide a springboard for a series of discussions that result in a better working relationship among the members of a group. I've found that generally younger employees are more likely to find value in the tests because they have less experience in workplace teams and are still discovering their own talents and abilities. For more mature employees, the discussions usually just help them articulate what many of them have learned through experience.

ANY test that attempts to categorize people into 4, 8, 16, or however many groups, ought to be taken with a grain of salt, though, when it comes to viewing yourself through the lens of the category you've been assigned. Some characteristics may be bang-on, some will be totally bizarre, and a bunch will be "well, that sort of is true, but..." The only value, again, is using your results as a starting point to think about your own preferences and behavior.

So my response is that, yes, the tests can be useful, IN CERTAIN SITUATIONS, for many people. Are these tests accurate? Probably not, except maybe in a global sense because a specific individual is just too complex, complicated, and unique to be nailed down that way.

I have taken it. I found it to to be very accurate in accessing my working style & behavior, as well as my behavior under stress at the workplace. It was quite accurate in predicting that at that point I was unsatisfied & looking for a career change. I'm highest on C, followed by D.

I've taken both the Myers Briggs and disc a couple of times. What interesting to me us both the consistency and inconsistency of the results. Generally I've come out with the same results, but depending on what job I've held At the time, one tendency vs another moves into the forefront.
For me the classes involving these "tests" are the best of the typically lame
HR classes that are part of the improving yourself culture at most large organizations.

Nicole, I'm kinda come as I am and there's no real dissonance between me at work and me anywhere, so I was more irritated with the test with not understanding that it IS possible to be both a people person AND an introvert, a team player AND someone who works well alone, a good leader AND a good support act. I've been working for 20 years in creative positions and yes, it is possible! Sheez, I'm a strategic writer and editor, if I couldn't do all those things I'd be out of work.

High five fellow "I"!
I think if you refuse a team building exercise you get put in the "D" category right away.
One of our group didn't really get a result - she was sort of all over the place, turned out it was because she had just changed jobs so her profile reflected both her old job and her new job. The other thing that is difficult in DISC is that one has to answer according to what one's behaviour is at work, which can be very different from one's behaviour in other spheres.

Well, you probably made the right decision in taking the test. In one of the "mental health" questionnaires I had to take, they had statements like: "I often thing people are trying to poison me." Agree/Disagree. They kept asking the same way, which made gave me a persistent case of the giggles, which did not please the man administering the test. I was must imaging myself as a homicidal pastor's wife!

That said, the Meyers Briggs I took with DH in our premarital counseling was helpful in starting discussion and building understanding of personal differences. I'm not sure I'd want that much "Kum ba yah" with my coworkers though. Of course, I've found that singers hanging out in the green room will share anything and are entirely too self-aware. Hang out with a dozen opera singers for 6 weeks and your mind will be blown -- or unhinged. It will make tech seem like a PTO meeting.

You mention that you "had" to take it. Was it part of your employment? I've not taken the DISC, but I've been required to take the Meyers Briggs and other tests for my husbands employment when he was a pastor, and I have mixed feelings about such tests used in the workplace. I think they should always be the choice of the person taking them.

Haha, I am a total personality test addict, although I agree that there is a certain amount of horoscope-ness to them ... I find them interesting as jumping-off points, but as Suz says, hardly definitive. I would have to say IK that the person you were dealing with doesn't sound very professional!
Do you mind me asking your result? I always come up an S followed by C, or the reverse.

I have done it.

Is it accurate? Hard to say. It's not completely off base. It suggests areas of strength and weakness -- or maybe preferences -- but it's only one tool and hardly definitive.

I found it most interesting in allowing me to compare myself with colleagues whose results fell in a different quadrant; it sort of affirmed my sense of why we do or don't work well together.
