My sister was dead keen on the TV show of the Famous Five in the eighties, to the point of giving up Brownies because the show was on the same afternoon. I don't know what she thinks of it now, and I know her kids have watched them, but I found them now insufferably slow and my kids didn't bother watching them (despite enjoying the books)

Emily, I've never seen Where the Heart Is, so I can't comment on your taste, but there's nothing wrong with having a few guilty pleasures! I just saw Warm Bodies this summer, and confess to loving it so much that I subsequently bought the book (which is quite different, and actually better, than the film). The film version is a combination of post-apocalyptic horror and sappy romance clearly aimed at teens, in which the male lead is a zombie. Yes, a walking, groaning, decomposing corpse. And the plot was not without many flaws. I don't know what's the matter with me. Your beloved film can't be worse.

The only movie I ever went THREE times to the theatre to see was Disney's Beauty and the Beast when I was around 14 . I still love it and other fairy tales at age 35.

I watched and liked Xanadu as a teenager!t Saturday Night Fever also. It's hard not to be entertained when there is singing and dancing, I think! I haven't watched either since, though...

I need to add Speed and Twister to my list of awful-movie-love confessions. And, um, Grease......ahem...2.

@kkards, yes, I hate spending 2hrs watching a movie just to be sad after! I think the happy ending of Where the Heart Is is what does it for me, too. I saw West Side Story Live a couple of years ago and really enjoyed it, I haven't seen the movie version yet.

@AlaskaGirl, Jaws is on my to-watch list! I feel like it's been a pop-culture oversight for me...

@Louise, I own the first Twilight movie, and I quite liked the books, at least up to #4... :D

@Rabbit, I can relate, I own Troy specifically because of Brad Pitt's butt. :D

Speaking of Saturday Night Fever, I still find the dancing great but when I saw it again a few years back I realized how awful the film as a whole was.

And though we're not discussing books, I have to mention how I have seriously aged out of Catcher in the Rye, which had meant so much to me during my adolescence.

I refuse to believe anything I've ever loved is bad. That said, there are certain movies, when forced upon the people in my life who are viewing it at a different stage in life, can't appreciate the nuance. (Beetlejuice, summer school). I will till the day I die defend Ferris Bueller, Rushmore, The Mission.

Ah, well, as a inveterate musical theater fan and opera lover, I'm an expert at suspending disbelief. There was actually a musical by Sondheim with a similar theme -- an author holes up to live in a department store, thinking he'll have quiet to write, and discovers a whole community living there.

The show is called Evening Primrose. It was written for live television (I think it was a part of Playhouse 90). Here's a clip:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o-0OUDs9KRE

Yep. The guy looks like he's straight out of Pscyho. But I still like it.

love that movie -- and yup, i realize how unlikely the plot is, but i'm a sucker for a happy ending!
one of my all time fav movies is West Side Story, and then Natalie Wood died, and i found out she (and her love, Tony) was dubbed! it took something away from the movie, but then last summer i saw it the the Boston Symphiny playing live, and it made me love it even more!

Laura, I had no idea it was a book! I'll have to give it a read. No joke, I still love the movie. I am sure you are right - it's probably like how the music of your youth sticks with you.

I think I am something of a bad-00s-movies connoisseur; I also love and own Center Stage, and just located DVDs of SyFy's Dune/Children of Dune Miniseries (which I maintain is awesome! also, James McAvoy!! ). I bet your made-for-tv movies are out there somewhere....

Aww, I love that movie. The book is good too, if a bit more blunt about the challenges of poverty in rural America.

I know what you mean, though. It seems that a lot of my affection for movies, particularly ones I loved when I was a kid, were more about the mood they evoked or one character or scene, compared to a coherent realistic plot or what have you. I've got some straight to cable movies from the 80s in my memory I'd love to find again and see how truly bad they are.

I was flipping through Netflix yesterday looking for something to watch, and was excited to notice that "Where the Heart Is" (w/Natalie Portman, James Frain, Ashley Judd, Stockard Channing, Joan Crawford) had been added. Sweet! That was, like, my favourite movie in the early 00s!

Obviously 14 year old me had terrible taste, because as it turns out, Where the Heart Is is an awful movie. The structure of the movie is weird and the plot is completely ridiculous. I mean, really, no Wal Mart is ever empty enough for nobody to notice a pregnant teenager living in it. Don't get me started.

(I still kind of like it, though. I did a spit take when I realized James Frain played Forney, I love that guy in everything.)

This happens to everybody, right?
