LOVE the bhs gown!

Also love the monsoon and lace shrug. You have great options Polly, and I am excited to see what you end up with.

You look amazing in a long formal gown, btw

Julie - you're amazing! Sequin shrugs now firmly off the list. Great dress you've linked to and definitely worth a shot, although I'm starting to get overwhelmed by how much choice there is once you start looking!

I'll keep going!

Given that I donated a sequin top for chafing my skin under my arms, I vote for the black lace shrug (if its non itchy).

Being that I'm quite practical Polly, have you looked at the used dresses on ebay? Are you quite easy to fit? There are some pretty bargains which have often only been worn once
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ROMAN-OR.....41585219a8
Do your local charity shops have a formal section?

Right! I've been thinking about this. Such helpful thoughts.

#1 felt fabulous when I put it on and I did have the 'YES' reaction when I looked in the mirror. BUT it's the most expensive by far and I'd have to buy a shrug and possibly underwear to fit it too, unless I end up being completely confident about wearing it as it is.

#2 ticks lots of boxes (security, fit, shape, comfort) but doesn't excite me and is still very pricey.

#3 is going back - I don't feel right in it

#4 is the budget option (BHS - thanks Fi) and is also the only black dress. It fits snugly round the bust and I would wear it with the little straps for security. I would need a shrug.

The audience will see my side, while I'm playing, and front and back when I come into and go out of the room.

As regards the other questions, I will have to get dressed up and do some playing, hopefully tomorrow!

GirlX - very helpful thoughts. I'm quite a careful buyer and don't like buying things for just one occasion. Also, in my day to day wardrobe I'm reaching a stage where I only want to buy things that are really good now. This one has come a bit out of the blue, though, and I'm not sure if I can justify the expense of getting the absolute perfect dress this time; it potentially could pay its way but I can't be sure how much I will use it at the moment. I have been doing very little playing since starting our family 7 years ago and can't be sure how many of these sorts of occasions I am likely to need something for. Potentially very few and this dress may be unused for the next 10 years!

Shrug options:

http://www.monsoon.co.uk/linds...../73212509/

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayI....._856wt_689

I think you need to play piano in the dresses, do they slip or rub under the arm? Does the shorter length allow better access to the pedals? Will you have your back to the audience? Do we need to look at the rear view?

Sorry to bombard you with questions Polly but I believe it is important to think twice and buy once (not counting returns)!

Dress #1 is my favourite on you - it highlights your waist and gives you a great shape. The skirt flows beautifully. It's a shame that you're going to cover up with a bolero - it'll look great, but you have beautiful shoulders. The top doesn't look loose in the photo, but you certainly don't want to spend an evening worrying about spilling out of the front of your gown. Can it be tailored easily?

Dress #2 is the one I like the least. The straps seem too wide for your frame and chop up the slope of your shoulders. And the bodice is too boxy.

Dress #3 has quite a pretty neckline but seems to age you a little bit, at least in comparison to the other dresses.

Dress #4 is my second favourite, and Angie's idea for a metallic bolero is spot on, you definitely want some contrast there otherwise you lose the feel of of a strapless (or spaghetti strap) dress.

Have you sat down in any of these gowns? Would you feel comfortable wearing them seated at the piano?

Wow! Already super-duper options.

First, you look sensational in strapless #1.Good grief! You need a shrug to cover up as you say - how about silver? And silver shoes?

#8 - another excellent choice! The bolero works just fine - how about something metallic instead?

You are getting there, Polly. Soon you shall be practicing with a gown safely tucked away in your closet for fast retrieval

# 1 I love this but can see why you'd feel exposed

#2 this is my favourite I like the cross over detailing over the bust also straps are thick enough you can wear a regular bra, I really struggle with strapless ones

#3 I feel the neckline is too high on this with such a long bottom I think you need a bit of skin showing up top?

#4 I love the knot detailing x

Yes, Sarah, they are my bra straps showing initially (should have made that clear). I think that if I go for this one I would wear something over it, as in pic 11, and I would wear the spaghetti straps to make me feel safe!

Just to clarify - in 8/9/10 - I thought it had "chain" straps - but I think I see now that those are your bra straps. This is a very flattering strapless gown, but again, I'd think about whether you'll be comfortable playing in something strapless.

#2.. i like this one as well
#3 ... I don't care for the neckline or the sleeves of this one.
#4...This is my favorite of the lot. I like the knotted flowy thing at the waist. I like it best strapless. I could see this with a lacy bolero to give it coverage, and add to the textural interest.

Whatever you choose, don't get a strapless that isn't a perfect fit. You don't want to spend your evening pulling and tugging at the dress.

I like the dress in pic 5. It is my second choice.

I love the neckline and color of 6/7 but the skirt is a bit full and it seems an awkward length so it is my third choice.

I think 8.9.10 is a great fit and very figure flattering on you. It is simple and elegant and with be beautiful with a few nice accessories to add sparkle. This is my first choice.

Here are my two cents:

#1 - This has potential, although the photos are fuzzier than the rest, so it's a bit hard to tell. However, if you don't feel comfortable without a wrap, I'd skip it - you don't want to have to mess with a wrap when you're playing, right?! That sounds like a huge pain.

#2 - I think that that is a winner, and it looks like it would be a great dress to play in.

#3 - Although at first I was drawn to the this one, it looks like it might be too short.

#4 - I'm not a huge fan of the straps on this one.

Good luck with this!

I really like the dress in #3, 4, and 5. I'm not necessarily a fan of strapless, and the dress in #6 and 7 is not as formal looking to me. Also if 3/4/5 is in navy then all the better b/c I find navy a more interesting color for evening than black. Wear it with a navy satin or bronze metallic shoe.
Are you enjoying the process? ;P

I've been out shopping! Are any any good?

#1 (1/2) Navy blue is a bit loose round the bust. The SA suggested that the right underwear could make a difference. It's a lovely dress, but I feel a bit exposed at the top half and would need a wrap.

#2 (3-5) Also navy blue. Pics 3 and 4 are (I think) the too large versions, but included for views of the dress. Pic 5 is the smaller size.

#3 (6-7 AND 13-14) Also navy blue. Would need shape wear underneath for the tummy, but has some sparkly bits at the top

#4 (8-12) The only black one I tried that was at all possible. It has removable spaghetti straps, and I would wear it with a black bolero (or whatever you call it) as pictured for the recital.

As ever, I struggle with taking decent pics, so not sure if you can see any of them well enough.I tried on quite a few others too. Some mentioned on my earlier thread I couldn't find in the shops. Unfortunately the nearest John Lewis is 2 hours drive away so I can't try all of those without buying them online.
